  1. I was referring to the Big 10 conference as a powerhouse, not the Gophers specifically. The Gophers are a middle of the pack team in the Big 10, which puts them somewhere arguably in the top 25 to top 35 in all of D1. They were down last year, and still managed to beat NDSU in spite of playing about as poorly as I've seen a Gopher football team play in many years. If they were ever going to lose to a I-AA team, you'd think that would have been the game. Even with the stars and planets all aligned just perfectly, the Bison managed to lose that game. With that thought in mind, why would any I-AA want to schedule a game that they can pencil in with 99.9% certainty as one in the "L" column? Unless getting a big check takes priority over winning football games. If that's the motivating factor, I would have to seriously question that program's commitment to winning.

All I can say is "Wow". DaveK, my prayers are with you. Hate is a counterproductive pasttime. If the Sioux lost 10-9 to the Goofs in FB--when they should have won--you would probably be trumpeting in all 4 corners of the state. Open your eyes. Everybody knows that UM should have won that game by 50 pts. If you review your DVR or Tivo you will see that the Bison won that game. They left 13 pts on the field. Take an unbiased look at the tape. I guess it doesn't matter anyway since UM is "upgrading" their schedule to no longer include NDSU. At least we'll get another $350K to add to our athletic budget after this yr's game, which we will win. Next up: Iowa State in 2009.

  2. IIRC, the Bison went to that new "modern" pant stripe and changed from yellow to green pants for away games.

Personally, I can't stand the new Vikings-esque pant stripe and I would throw up if UND went in that direction. I prefer the traditional look for college teams.

The Bison actually changed the pants and jerseys for the away unis. The pants are green with the "modern" (yellow) stripe down the side and they also added the new Bison-Head logo to the pants. They used a slightly different shade of dark green for the pants that I think looks great. The jerseys had to be changed again after 2005 because announcers and spectators had trouble distinguishing the numbers when the players were down on the field. The yellow numbers on a white jersey looked blurry. They fixed that last year by outlining the yellow numbers with a green border so they stood out better. They also embroidered the numbers on as opposed to a standard silk-screening. I like the embroidered look much better. It gives the jersey a higher quality look. They also have a yellow stripe (well, kind of a stripe?) that runs down from the armpit to waist area that's pretty cool. I am looking fwd to attending the Spring Game (April 21st at The Dome) to see what kind of gear they'll be selling. They usually have a large selection of game-worn jerseys and other items that a person can purchase and you never know what you'll find digging through the racks. Every year is different and I enjoy that almost as much as watching the game itself. Does UND do something like this for your Spring Game?

  3. With your impending move to FCS, do any of you know if UND plans on updating your uniforms? As you know, NDSU updated ours when we moved up. Kinda of a "fresh start" or "new era" sort of thinking, I guess. Would a (negative) NCAA nickname decision affect this? Another question would be how many of you would be in favor of updating your unis, regardless of the nickname issue. I am not talking wholesale changes, just some small updates, newer styles, etc while still reflecting the UND Fighting Sioux moniker. I for one was pleased when NDSU updated ours. I think the new ones look more "DI" and I like how most FCS teams sew their conference patch onto their jerseys. It also felt like NDSU was ushering a new era of Bison Football, which, in effect, we are. I am curious as to what you guys think. Not about our jerseys (no need for another smack fest) but about your own.

  4. Curious. NDSU & SDSU formed a partnership in the transition to DI. Both schools said it was "both or neither" in gaining conference membership to the Mid-Con/Gateway. Do the UND fans feel the same way with USD? Will the UXD's partner-up during the transition? Serious question, not to be construed as smack.

  5. Classy acceptance of the congratulations there Johnny. :silly:

I had to get that one in because nobody said we could do any of this. Today is a dream come true for me. In all sincerity, this is an exciting time for both NDSU and UND. It's great because now I can finally watch NDSU once again battle for conference and national titles and I can also watch UND's transition and see how they progress. These next 5 yrs are going to be very interesting for the entire state of ND. It's a good thing. I wish UND the best of luck because it's not going to be easy. It certainly wasn't easy (and in some cases still isn't easy) for NDSU so from that perspective, I certainly feel for what UND is up against. UND is a quality institution and I have no doubt that they're up to the task. Here's to a milestone for the entire state, and I think we can all collectively be proud of that.

  6. Congratulations to the Rabbits & Bison! That means NDSU has 8 guaranteed conference games per year, combined with a scheduling agreement with Poly & Davis and last but not least, a BIG $$$$$$$$ game with an FBS school like Minnesota, Iowa State, etc. Does that mean UND won't be able to play NDSU until when?:silly:??;)?:D? Somebody call Ed Schultz. The Bison are runnin' scared, buuuoooooyyyyyyy! The circle is complete for the SU's so now we can watch in anticipation for UND and USD to accept membership into the Big Sky with Denver and UBC. Best of luck and you're welcome for the DI blueprint.

  7. Second year in a row UNO has a bye from NCC play the week prior to playing UND. What's up with that? You'd kind of think RT would be giving UND those types of little scheduling advantages more often.

That right there says it all. ;)

  8. What is wrong with resuming the FB game in 2009? All this speculation is going to drive people on both sides insane and make this rivalry uglier than it already is, if that's possible. Let me give you my observations on some scenarios, if you will:

    1) game is played in 2007

Why? Wouldn't it be preferable for UND to get their schollies & recruiting up so there can be no excuses from either side? I, as a Bison fan, would much rather see a fully-funded (63 or 57) UND team play The Herd. "Level the playing field".

    2)game is played in 2008

No way NDSU agrees to this because of playoff implications and UND's "non-counter" status. Even a Bison victory counts against us and that is unacceptable. You guys, of all people, should be able to identify with that (ala 2004). That's a moot point and, for that matter, another reason not to play in 2007.

    3)game is played in 2009.

Bingo. Hopefully by now 2 criteria have been met. NDSU is in the Gateway and UND is now fully funded (hooray  ) and is now a "counter". Bison have 8 conference games guaranteed per year and need only to fill 3 open OOC dates, one of which should by all means be UND. UND comes to the FFD for first game, then a yearly home & home rotation begins.

Is that so disagreeable? Let's get it on in 2009.

    GO BISON!!!

  9. Oh yeah, I keep forgetting you're going to 57 next season. That makes sense then. They probably told a bunch of the kids that they'll get more money next year.

I should note that NDSU had quite the recruiting class in 2003 (the our exploritory year class).

Frick, Dahl, Walker, Dragosavich, Safe, Mays, were all in that class.

If I am correct, I believe that UND stated that 2007 would be the exploratory year. This also means they are still playoff eligible for one final year before transition begins. How would they be able to fund 57 schollies in 2007 then? That wouldn't seem ethical of fair concerning the D2 teams they'd still be playing. Did I miss something during the NDSU transition? :D

*EDIT: never mind--a little research cleared this up for me so, again, nevermind

  10. Virtually no one at the D-2 level receives a full ride. There are only 36 scholarships available and teams are allowed to carry 85 players on scholarship. That averages out to 42% per scholarship. If you assume that the bulk of the money is invested in your starters and you assume each one of them receives approximately 2/3 of a scholarship, that leaves 21 scholarships to divide between 63 players. That averages out to be 1/3 of a scholarship per player. The problem for UND this year was trying to recruit D-1 players with D-2 money. However, the fact that next year there will be anywhere from 57-63 scholarships available means that the value of the scholarships will go up. 63 divided by 85 averages out to approximately 75% per scholarship. If you were to reward your starters with a full ride, the balance of the scholarships will be worth about 2/3. This will make it much easier to recruit and even this year enticed a few kids who were offered more by other D-2s.

I am curious as to how UND decides to fund the FB team through the transition. I.E.--is a plan in place to fund schollies incrementally or is there funding available to get to 63 right away? I am mostly curious on this one as to how it might affect any future NDSU-UND scheduling. Most NDSU posters, myself included, would prefer to not play the Sioux until at least 2009 or whenever they qualify as a DI "counter" game, whichever comes first. If that's doable in 2008, so be it, but I have my reservations until I see differently. If anybody posting here has info as to what the scholarship ramp-up plan is for UND, it'd be nice to know. Or, at the least, make for good speculation. Does anybody know anything regarding this???

  11. Undefeated against I-AA competition? Yes. Very good season? Yes. Played any teams that actually made the I-AA playoffs? No.

The pre-season 2006 Bison schedule looked tough. It was heralded as the toughest schedule that the Bison had ever faced, regular season. I still don't doubt that. Nobody expected the Ga So ass-kicking, and nobody, and I mean nobody, expected the Poly blowout. The Ball State win was a quality win and the Bison did, in fact, BEAT the Gophs in all categories until the ill-fated blocked kick. The UC-Davis comeback made school history and, looking at video, Stephen F Austin was the toughest game we had all year. That same SFA team played the Pac-10 Arizona Wildcats within a TD. Granted, UA is not the cream of the Pac-10 crop this year but any time you can do that and still (on paper) beat a Big 10 team, it says something. Be a realistic FB fan and don't let your Sioux pride cloud your judgement. NDSU had a fantastic year in '06. When UND can do likewise and prove it on the field, then you have something to talk about.

  12. Yeah...the FargoDome can leave one feeling kinda dirty.

Especially having to wear a Sioux jersey. You have no idea what I went through that evening, ha ha! I almost got as much $hit from Jacks fans as I did from Bison fans. Oh well, it was fun and I'm still here. I don't regret it.

  13. I was about to go digging for the same post. Your arrival on the board was... perhaps less subtle and secretive than you thought. We are all waiting for the photo, though...

I would love to give you a photo, but that whole weekend was really screwy. Not alcohol screwy, just schedule screwy. I actually attended that game (NDSU/SDSU) with my Sioux friend and both my boys. The crowd was nuts and I was more concerned keeping track of my boys than posing for photo-ops. Don't worry--my friend and I have a running bet on the jersey thing (because last year was sooooooooo fun) so there will be more episodes to follow, both ways. I promise that next time I will bring a camera and submit proof. Ideally, I hoped to have a kid-less wknd and go tailgating, hit the game, and then hit some bars in dwntwn Fgo. That didn't happen last year but maybe in 2-3 yrs. It's good fun for everybody and I never had a shower that felt so good afterwords.....

  14. Why the alias...ndsubison?

Because I was kicked off this board last year for some hostile comments I made. I've intentionally kept it toned down under my alias and will keep my choice comments confined to bisonville, where it's (obviously) more accepted. Now that my cover's blown, let's see how long it takes Jimdahl to give ol'johnny the boot?? ;)

  15. I am not sure anyone knows who is being so called "Punished".....

Need a good laugh go to Bisonville and read their tread on 2007 scheduling.....Its right below the thread about who is going to pay for their Mythical National 1AA Championship Rings...(LOL)...?

As a Bison fan, I have to disagree with the "Mythical I-AA Championship Rings" thing. Yeah they went undefeated against I-AA competition last year but that, in my mind, does not crown them National Champions. Whoever initiated that post on bisonville needs a life. Why are we talking about I-AA playoffs here anyway? Can't that wait until 2012 or 2013 or whatever it is? ;)

  16. Wasn't "everyone" assuming that UND was scheduling a loss last year with UNI? ;)

Well, yeah. That includes myself. Remember, I lost the "jersey bet" with my sioux friend over that game. Also, remember that UND beat a UNI team that, by year's end, proved to be vastly overranked. Not to knock the sioux because they deserved that hard-fought win, but day in and day out in I-AA (FCS), UND will win roughly half of such games. The rest will be heartbreakers or blowouts. It's a high level every weekend and playing tough once & awhile won't cut it. That's the truth and I think you will find that out in the next couple of seasons.

  17. With the difficulty that NDSU has been having getting home games, UND may very well experience the same difficulty begining in 2008. With the Southland adding a team (Central Arkansas) and the Gateway almost certainly adding NDSU and SDSU (Chapman will be in St Louis in February not to apply but to accept the invitation, IMHO), schools in those two conferences will need many fewer games. Getting to 7 FCS games, the criteria to be a counter for FCS opponents, will be a major chore. UNI probably wouldn't come to Grand Forks until the game is a counter. If the FCS went to 12 games in 2008, that would help UND.

In the meantime, teams almost definitely on UND's 2008 schedule would include:

    UC-Davis

    Cal Poly

    Southern Utah

    South Dakota

and very likely most if not all the members of the new GNAC football conference, which need games badly,

    C Washington

    W Washington

    Dixie St

    Humboldt St

    W Oregon

That is a terrible schedule. Poly and Davis will both produce a "L" for UND while So Utah is a tossup. The rest, UND shoould be able to get through them. Why isn't UND trying to schedule schools like New Hampshire, Maine and Holy Cross (i.e. hockey tie-in) to get the DI schedule rolling?

  18. I was at the Alerus and saw all four games. I am thinking that Blake Sczepankski (pronounced Sha-pan-ski) would look great in the Sioux secondary. 6'1" & 195 witha great knowlege of the game.

Which big offensive lineman from TRF at the Sioux looking at? I am curious if it is the BlackLance kid. OT - 6'6" and about 310. His dad played for Bemidji state in the 80's and his uncle played with myself (or should I say on my football team). He's a big kid but seemed to do a lot of hand-slapping of shoulder pads on the LB's and secondary during the game. I imagine the Sioux coaches could easily teach him much better technique. The thing that might become a small PR item with Andrew is the fact the he is part Chippewa and part Sioux. I could see the PC people accusing UND of getting a recruit just because he is a Native American Sioux.

I know one of the coaches from Proctor (Beat I-Falls last weekend). I am wondering how good he thought Brackins from I-Falls was last weekend.

Sczepanski just verballed to NDSU. Heard it on WDAY tonight.

  19. With the exploratory year coming in 2008, I was wondering if Buning has set up any home & homes with some I-AA programs. Also, will UND, like NDSU, decide to start mixing up the schedule with half DII's & half I-AA's to get started now that DII playoff criteria has been changed? I would really like to know what UND has set up for future schedules, if any?:D

  20. It's nice that each Maverick player will have their IQ on the side of their helmet. ;)

I think that those helmets are nice, actually. I especially like the new crimson color. Now if they get some new uni's to go with it... Speaking of schedules, do the Sioux have any I-AA/FCS teams on their schedule this year? Also, with the exploratory year coming in 2008, any news on potential I-AA opponents or scheduling agreements for then?

  21. Support for such a move would also have been necessary from the NCC commish in order to be persuasive with the league presidents. Anyone recall Roger Thomas' thoughts on moving to I-AA? I'm not sure he was selling the league presidents on that idea when the SU's were leaving.

Things have obviously changed since Roger Thomas was badmouthing a NCC DI move. NDSU & SDSU are two good examples of how to move up to DI. Northern Colorado is a bad example of how to move to DI. Underfunded with no vision=recipe for a DI disaster. It looks like the XDSU's will move into the Gateway for FB. With the Mid-Con alignment and the Western Wrestling Conference it looks like things are lining up for the SU's. UND and USD will have to forge their own collective DI independent pathways and cross their fingers for the next 5+ yrs. Sorry, but that's how it goes. NDSU and SDSU are one year away from reaping the benefits of moving early.

  22. The fact that the University of Minnesota has decided to not schedule UND in any sports other than WCHA hockey should have major implications on UND's proposed DI move. Let's not forget that Wisc and IA enforce this same policy so those options are also limited. This has to hurt financially. NDSU received $350,000 for a FB game against UM this year and is due to receive an additional $375,000 for the game next year. That is just short of a million dollars for the athletic department in just over one year. Also, the Bison FB team is scheduled to go down to Ames, IA to take on the Cyclones in 2009 for yet another big payday and boost to the athletic dept. Maybe even a win as well. The fact that NDSU teams have been routinely competitive with UM teams is only icing on the cake. What are the options for UND right now? How can Buning spin his way out of this and garner the sort of $$$$$ that the athletic department so desperately needs to make this DI move successful?

  23. I know Dale Lennon is a class act. I wish he would replace that idiot Kupchella you have as president. But is UND going to be able to compete with the Bison in recruiting this year?? I heard last year NDSU and UND went after nine of the same guys and NDSU got all nine. I am a Bison fan but I have to go for Lennon because he is first class, I hope you say the same for Coach Bohl.

No doubt that Lennon is a good coach. As far as recruiting, I think that NDSU will get the most highly-recruited athletes for at least the next 5 yrs. Why? NDSU is 1 year away from being playoff eligible while UND won't be until 2011 at the least. Also, the NDSU program is finally back on the rise and with the narrow loss to Minnesota, recruits will notice that. The weekend that NDSU played the Gophers to a one point loss, 15 of the 20 recruits that NDSU brought to the game verballed afterwords. That is a big deal. We are talking about guys that were recruited by most Big 10 schools, most MAC schools and some PAC-10 and Big 12 schools. Guys that would have NEVER thought of coming to NDSU othertwise. I have no doubt that UND can also recruit such athletes but I am afraid that they are behind the 8 ball by a minimum of 5-8 yrs in FB alone.
