  1. That could be. Or it could be that the coachs from the East split votes between either Wurden and Miller or Wurden and Everson. And all the West coachs voted for Herbel. That is the only way I can believe Herbel won, even if Wurden is a "C" student.

Being considered a "c" student would be a bit generous for Wurden.

  2. I was going by school, not city. I guess the three you mentioned are the only three I can think of currently playing. Grubb and Krebsbach both played D-1 hockey recently.

Cory McLean of Fargo North also played for Notre Dame, graduating in 2005.

  3. actually the Roughriders are the #2 seed based on the EDC tourney only, still the #1 team in the state by all accounts. and to answer the latest post, I think Minot probably was the strongest team out of the west this year, but it would be fun to see Williston succeed if their goalie can play like he did last night, but since they rotate two senior goalies, they will have to get past Bismarck today for him to get one more shot.

By all accounts? I think the teams from North Dakota that beat them might have a small disagreement with that statement. With the level of play Grafton, South, and Red River are all at it's much too subjective to have a team that is clearly the best. With Red River beating South twice and losing once while splitting 1-1 with Grafton, South going into tonight's game against Grafton 2-0 against them, it's just too close to call.

  4. The West had a pretty decent showing this year. They showed some depth, playing in 3 close games. Ironically the only blowout was by an Eastern team who had been in the West up until this year (or was it last year). Bismark has some very good youth teams that should translate into some decent HS teams in the next few years. Also the population of Bismarck and Williston has been growing at a steady pace. More numbers typically equal better quality. Minot continues to have talented teams that cannot win when it matters. Minot probably has more alum playing college/junior hockey than any other school (currently).

Based simply on population growth the schools I would expect to field the best teams over the next several years are RR, South and Bismarck High. The only other school that should have increased enrollment is Williston.

Despite the juvenile posts by junior24 and other HS kids that post on this site, the West had an ok showing this year. In past years I would say that 6 or 7 East teams would be in the state tourny if they still did the East-West play in, but this year I think it worked out right. Fargo North, Central and WF were not much better than any of the four Western teams in the tourny.

That may be true, but South is about to get a good deal smaller as a new high school is being built in South Fargo.

  5. I'm glad someone so patiently waited until I posted something that was incorrect, and corrected me. Such is a rare occasion, you should be given an award. Anyway, I didn't say as a matter of fact he was going to Omaha, just what I had heard, and said it was second hand information.

But enjoy the time while it lasts, I'm not wrong often.

Or I could not care, as I really couldn't care less in regards to how often you are or are not right. I was just clarifying.

  6. Nothing too major, just a few comments/jabs at our trio for their recent run in with the law. Wouldn't go for them anyway. I'll cheer for Northeastern as every year! ;) My favorite comment/question on their board was "Is the legal drinking age 21 in ND?" "Ah yeah buddy, that's a federal law. Nice education you be gettin there at BC!"

Drinking age is mandated by the state, not federal government.

  7. I wish they would drop all of the other factors from these awards (Mr. Hockey, Basketball, etc.). There should be an award for the best hockey player in the state, not the best hockey player in the state who also is a perfect citizen and student. If you want a character award, then create a new one. Players should be honored for their hockey skills. It equates to a college graduate who has a 4.0 but no extra activities losing a job to a student with a 3.0 with extra activities. Why are extra activities so important?

If this wasn't high school athletics you might have a point. The premise for high school sports is not to become the best athlete, it's to be the best student athlete. As long as high school hockey is just that then other factors, such as the whole high school part, might have more pull than just pure athleticism and competition,

  8. I'd put my money on the top Elite 2 team in the league against any High School team in ND. The point was your generalization about Elite 2 hockey just doesn't add up.

Elite II teams would come nowhere close to the top 3 teams in the state, but beyond that would be close or blow out the lower tier teams.

  9. I think quite a few people would agree with me and saying that South has some good, big Defenseman. South has Wurden, Metz, Dawson, and Wagner for their 4 big Defenseman. Yes Wagner and Dawson are nothing special, but they are big and hard to get around especially at the Coliseum. You can't tell me that Wurden and Metz aren't good. I wasn't stating they had just amazing defense, but more that they were big and 2 of them were good players. I know Central is always a good team come tournament time but I saw them play Shanley and they struggled for a while. Central does have a good goalie but no depth anywhere else. Simonson is a good scoring punch but most teams will just key on him if he is all they have. If they can prove me wrong, more power to them. Sorry for my lack of credibility. I will let you handle all of the Central talk from here.

In regards to south's defense, I'm pretty sure you're a ways off. Dawson doesn't play much and is very small in comparison to South's other defense. Trevor Anderson is the other defense. And as for two of them being 'good players', I'd be willing to state Danny Wurden is the best skater in the state. Wurden and Wagner each had a 2 or 3 point game against Grafton and Anderson and Metz also made an impact on the score. My opinion of Wurden is based only off his elite weekend in Grand Forks, however, and he did get a lot of ice time and do well enough to make the final team. They may not be as strong as Red River's duo, but those two can't be on the ice every minute of the game.

  10. Any ideas how Jamestown will do in the West this year

For a little Elite I update on the North Dakota players, I'm pretty sure the Tyler Klein(North) and Danny Wurden(South) both made the National team. I've heard Klein has been ripping it up and Wurden must be doing pretty well, good luck to both.

  11. from what i have heard i was told that some scrimmages or "games" would be played on Nov. 18. i believe its a saturday.

Depends on which Jamboree you mean. I think South and the Grand Forks teams have since began to play in Jamborees in Minnesota. Could be wrong though, I just don't remember seeing either of them there last year.

  12. Why do you think South top lines will have trouble together?

I think this becuase they've relied so heavily on the incredible class of '06 and have never had to push their own to this point. Attitudes, expectations, and chemistry could be a real killer.

As for Grafton, all they've really had for a while is one line and been succesful. If they can pull together a half decent goalie it could all pull together, but I think goaltending will remain the deciding factor for Grafton.

And I was under the belief that Dakota Hockey Magazine had discontinued its publication sometime last year.

  13. I like the Miller-Anderson-Hills line. I think that will be the top line in the State. However, South's top line will also be good. RR will have the best defensive pair with Galbreath and Ladoucer, but South's D corps will be huge---Wurden, Metz, Anderson, Wagner and Dawson are all very big. Tanner McLean may also be in the mix. South probably has the best depth in the State, but Grafton and RR may have more top players. RR and South are also well coached teams.

I know Wurden is pretty solid and Metz is a big kid, but I'm not sure of the other 3 you mentioned. Personally, I think Grafton will be in close contention for the best team in EDC with some really powerful offensive punch. However, I believe I remember hearing something about Grafton's coach resigning last year, is that true? As for depth, I think South's top lines may have trouble together, and this isn't the West, so McBain could prove to be a null factor. For the top three I think Grafton may have it if they manage to get some strong goaltending. Grafton's top 3 are too much for any D in the state, South will have to rely heavily on their defense, and Red River will have to depend upon Meland and their two D sensations. It should prove to be very close in the end, and seems like it's going to be quite the competition for state this year.
