  1. I can't find it on the online Herald, but a little blurb on the soccer search says that they should be interviewing this week or next. They have a total of 14 applicants, one of which is Kristen Gay the current assistant coach.

I am a little surprised that only 14 people applied.

No real surprise about either situation - Brock being in over his head and/or only 14 applicants for the position.

The 1st thing you have to look at with regards to the NCAA play-off team was who was responsible for recruiting the majority of those players? I think a lot of the credit for the quality of those players goes to Ange Morrison and it some respect to Neil Sedgwick for the 5th year players.

Brock is/was very effective at playing the underdog/under appreciated angle with his teams but that approach only takes you so far and it's usually only a one shot deal. (Although he was able to use it quite effectively with his Bismarck HS teams in they're ongoing rivalry with EDC teams.)

As for there only being 14 applicants? Ask yourself these questions - how long has the Sioux women's soccer program been in existence? How many head coaches has the program had during that time period?

Combine those answers with the fact that the program is making the leap from DII to DI without the safety net of a conference and I think getting 14 applicants is a pretty good number

  2. In reference to the St. Cloud 1-0 OT, it was this first win for the program at St. Cloud (they tied @ St. Cloud last year). As a parent of a former player I know this because St. Cloud has been a little like Auggie for the football team so all things considered that would be a quality win. Also the NCC no longer has a postseason tournament, they did away with it after the 2004 season. Why I don't know, but you either get into the NCAA tournament or your season ends at the end of the regular season.

I think the reason why the NCC did away with the conference play-off is due to the fact that the first round of the NCAA play-offs are scheduled for the first weekend in November. That's ridiculous.

That means in order to have a conference tournament on the last weekend of October you have to wrap up your regular season by the third weekend in October. I believe that's October 21/22 this year.

That would make for a ridiculously short regular season if you did that.

  3. Is anyone else concerned about how our women's soccer team is doing?

4-7-1 and no wins over quality opponents. I mean we're supposed to be beating MSU-Moorhead, Crookston and Bemidji State. SCSU too and that game was in OT!

If there isn't a win versus Augie on Sunday I'd say there's a real cause for concern. If we're not careful the NCC play-offs could be slipping over the horizon pretty quickly.

  4. I'm going to wade in here cause I'm interested in the subject matter and the people involved.

Obviously, Bina was asked to resign or risk being fired. That's been Dorn's M.O. for a number of years. Look at the departure of the first two soccer coaches and the former women's track coach. (I'd throw in the former softball coach but he resigned, rather than be fired, for propositioning a player after he'd had a little too much to drink.)

I'm not sure whether one of the "philosophical differences" was what to do about the quality of the assistants (if your recruiting drops off it's the first place to look), the number of assistants, renovations to the BSA, upgrades to the ancient BBF or what but Lynn Dorn is a very opinionated person and it's not too hard to have philospohical differences with that woman.

As for whether Sheila Parrish's parents would carry that much influence and weight? Oh ya, they would. And not because they're Sheila's parents but becuase they're calling Lynn. Lynn doesn't like to have her phone ring about any of the minor sports.

A source told me that the Fargo Forum was going to do a follow-up on the situation but as of today there hasn't been anything. McFeely had something today (2/7/06) about the women's basketball team not living up to expectations and I thought that would have been a natural for a segue into talking about the VB situation.

So, ya, the situation reeks but it's not like it's the first time that the Bison have dropped a big turd in public.

  5. How did they play? What made it so different than in previous years? Under Sedgwick, and then Morrison, they played a pretty direct style. Often playing a 3-4-3. Were they at least trying to keep possession of the ball?

  6. I'm sure they have mixed feelings about the double round robin format but it was probably getting pretty close to impossible to any more in-region games. Especially late in the year.

One of the other conferences in the region, the one in Missouri, already plays a double round-robin so that eliminates some pretty good teams from being on your schedule late in the year. Doesn't the Northern Sun also do the same now too?

I think they also may have found that the end-of-season Conference tournament may have been hurting NCC teams more than it was helping them.

Seeing as how DII is based so much on regional play I would think that the double round robin would be a good thing. Sure beats playing DIII or NAIA schools.

  7. Fantastic! Now if the Athletic Department can finally keep a coach around longer than 2 seasons they might be able to really take it somehwere. Five coaches in seven seasons is not good by any standard.

Where are the UNO and Mankato games this season? Those matches will definitely be worth watching.

  8. Yeah, I couldn't find anything either about the HC at USD (Jessica Maddox) leaving. I wonder what that's all about. Have there been many other coaches that have moved schools within the NCC in other sports?

  9. I agree, I think that we need a new coach with HCing experience.  The learning curve of hiring an assitant would be too great.  How long do you expect Mrs Rivard to be around?  The biggest thing the women's soccer commitee needs is stability and some commitment from administration.  We have had a very good program, but I want the adm. to realize that this could be a good program on the national level with a little stability and commitment.

With that said, my vote still goes to Brock Thompson with three years of head coaching experience and two national tournament appearences, if indeed he is interested.  He has spent many years in ND so I would assume that if he is interesting in coming back it is for long term.  But I do agree we need someone with head coaching experiene and Rivard should make the first cut because of this.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I would agree with you on Brock - great choice. Someone with HC experience, a person with experience at the next level, someone with a history in ND as well as someone who has clearly demonstrated success. Let's hope he's interested and submits his resume.

I also agree with you that the administration needs to demonstrate some commitment to the program. Granstrand was able to ride on the coat-tails of the recruiting classes from the first two coaches. If they were able to bring in quality players there's no reason why someone with the right level of motivation and level of commitment from the adminsitration can't return the program to the NCAA's.

  10. If reference to Mayvilles record last year, the women were 3-12 and the men were 4-10. What was the reason he left UND? It seems that being an assistant at UND would be better than the head gig at Mayville?

On the surafce it would seem that way but when administrators look at resumes those with HC experience get lumped into one pile and those without HC experience get tossed in the garbage.

Now that Rivard can list HC experience on his resume, even though the teams were a combined 7-22 last year, he'll survive the first cut.

Face it HC's have much more responsibility than AC's. Even when you compare Mayville State to UND.

  11. They have Bronson Field. That is their permanent field and they will be playing there for years.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Are you trying to tell me that a patch of grass next to a bookstore qualifies as a field? Come on Bronson is horrible. Have you been to some of the other facilities around the NCC or the region? Do you think it's on par with some of the other facilities at UND? In my opinion it's not even close.

  12. It looks like UND is looking for a soccer coach. Again. link What is the deal here? This will be the 5th different coach for a program that started in 1999. The program has actually done exceptionally well on the field, but why is it that this is the one program at UND that can't keep a coach for more than a year or two?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Why are they looking? Again? Simply because they don't support the coaches that well. How long has the status of an actual field been up in the air? What's the support for an assistant? Heck even UNO has a full-time assistant!

You're right it's downright embarassing that there have been 4 coaches in 6 years. And the program has gone to the NCAA's! First Sedgwick, then Morrison, followed by a bit of a sketchy guy and now Bennett. You would think it would raise a red flag somewhere, anywhere, on campus.

  13. Good luck Tim!

Let's hope it all works out well for the new coach. Especially with preseason starting in a week or two.

Let's also hope that UND is able to get a soccer coach to stick around for longer than two seasons this time.

  14. Has any one heard anything about the search process for the new women's soccer coach?

I'm assuming that pre-season is going to start in about three weeks so they had better be hiring someone soon. I just hope they get someone qualified although with a slary of only 25-30K it's going to be slim pickings.

  15. sioux for D2......obviously you are not familar with how the whole process works for bidding on events or you wouldnt have made such a ignorant comment....if a school doesnt bid on a event, they have no chance to host it, and i am sure a 8 hour bus ride for Omaha would have been different if they would have came to UND..obviously since UND beat Omaha on our home field last year when they were #1 or #2 in the country...i too wonder if their is any self evaluation rather than perhaps blaming a soccer coach who is deemed a complainer..

I am very familiar with how the bid process works. No bid - No host. The coach has to take some responsibility for keeping the administration informed about their ranking in the region. If it was football or basketball I would suspect that the AD's know what the ranking is but for a minor sport the coach needs to do some work to keep the higher ups informed.

Whatever the reason let's just hope that the merry-go-round environment of soccer coaches at UND stops for the next one. First Sedgwick for two years, Morrison for one and now Granstrand for two. That doesn't look good when searching for a high quality candidate. I'm sure most candidates will ask why there's been such a high turnover in such a short time period.

  16. It's a ridiculous proposal. So instead of kids getting exploited for 4 years it would now be 5.

The amount of money that some schools make off of men's basketball puts it in the realm of professional sport not college athletics. So instead of agreeing to pay the kids something even close to a living wage as a way of compensating them for their time and effort the coaches come up with the idea that they'll try to exploit them for an additional year. Wonderful.

  17. While I dispute the whole notion that it was solely the administration's fault for not submitting a bid to host the NCAA's (the rumor is the coach dimissed their chances of finishing 1st in the region) I do wonder whether the administration has done any self-evaluation on the reasons why the program has been through 3 coaches in 5 years.

If I'm an administrator I would like to have a little more stability with the program as it doesn't send a very good message to potential recruits.

  18. i have a better idea yet. how bout they just cut the program? nobody cares about womens soccer. they should start stripping after goals if they want people to watch and cheer for the team.

With an attitude like yours why don't we just cancel all women's sports and send them back to the kitchen to raise kids? I seriously hope you're not a university graduate.

  19. I'm looking for some reaction to Coach Granstrand's resignation from his position as women's soccer coach at UND to take over the position at Northern Michigan.

Any way I look at it the move still looks like a lateral if not downward move on the coaching ladder. The Wildcats from NMU doesn't exactly strike fear into anyone's heart.

The soccer team goes to the NCAA's in his second year, albeit with someone else's players, and then he bolts. What's up with that? It just doesn't make sense.

I realize that there were some issues regarding the hosting of the NCAA Regionals last November with the coach and the administration pointing figures at each other as to why the #1 seed wasn't hosting the NCAA Regional tournament but surely that wasn't enough for the guy to pack it in. I think he could have done a much better job of recruiting as none of the players brought in in the last two years had much of an overall impact on the program.

I would appreciate it if anyone else knows any information about his resignation to post it on the web site. I realize that women's soccer is not high on the list of everyone's priorities but a small amount of discussion isn't going to kill anyone.
