First, scrimmage against NDSU on Saturday.

It looked like a scrimmage against BSU. Everyone played, which is what I expected. Obviously they need to get better everywhere, as does everyone else. :-) I think the coaches were more interesting in seeing everyone in competition than winning the "match."

Thoughts from last year, looking forward include:

Need for outsides who can terminate out-of-systems balls. We can't always count on a tempo set against a single block, sometimes we just need to be more physical than they are.

A legit backrow threat, something to take the pressure off the outsides when the pass isn't perfect. It's been years since I recall having someone hit out of the pipe as a first option. Maybe the junior college transfers from Eastern Europe (or wherever) that played for Prior?

The middles are where I see the most work to be done. We lost 2 experienced, 5+ year middles. That is going to be a challenge to replace for this next year. Being an effective middle blocker is SO much more than the number of blocks they get. They need to be physical enough to be a legit threat when set, and to be able to slow down the other team at the net.

Was at the scrimmage yesterday. Tough that NDSU couldn’t come, would’ve been a better judge of where they are at. Defense and passing looked pretty good. I like our setters! Middle might be the weak link unless they have a stud transfer portal or freshman coming in for the fall. Right now there is 2 on the roster, ones 17 years old and the other will be a junior, but blocking looked to be a struggle for both of them.  Otherwise looked pretty similar to last fall. Seems to want to run a 6-2 and set quick to each pin and quick tempo in the middle.

McCallister Gayle and Ashlynn Olson were absent yesterday but still on roster. Any info on those two?

  2. One middle, Trinity Blackwell, just committed to Texas Women’s University. Haven’t heard of any others, but could happen in a few months when spring is over. I think they have a freshman on campus this spring though. Mariana Riviera. Not sure what position, though hopefully middle!

Missing the conference tournament is unforgivable

Missing tournament sucks, but we were more competitive with the top teams this year than the last 3-4 years. Girls look like they enjoy every point, and have great energy. We will miss our middles ( stockman A LOT), but seems like everyone else will be back, which also helps cohesion and trust. Still looking forward to the future!

I think we need a setter also.  I see the sets and they are not as crisp as other teams I have watched.  Also I believe most of the team was recruited by the current staff.  I know Gayle, Barber, Stockman for sure were recruited by current coaches.  I dont get why Olson is not playing either or any type of line up change makes no sense.

Article from December 2021 before Tupac was hired. Barber committed and signed with previous staff.

2019 roster- Gayle was on team. Might have even been a Pryor recruit.

And thought stockman transferred after 2021 season before Tupac was hired, but could be wrong on her. Timperly committed to Tiffin (her Instagram says committed September of 2021), but all other freshmen this year are Tupacs. De Jong, Lugo, and O’Dell are the only three non freshmen that I can see that didn’t have a commitment on their Instagram before Tupacs hiring.

Yeah, I didn't realize we had been eliminated from the Summit League Tournament (by my math, at least).  Pretty big disappointment.

Well,  the loss tonight sealed it if it hadn’t already. Tonight was bad, another 0-3 loss with no line up changes. Gayle consistently hitting .000 or negative, so Olson must not have the coaches trust for some reason. Potentially because she’s not a good passer, but Gayle was aced twice tonight with no blocks…

Only announced 1 on signing day yesterday, so that means everyone is coming back but the two middles, or they have transfers in mind.

Again, it’s only year two, and 3 of the staff is new this year, so it is still a building year and a learning process, even though it is a disappointment. Almost everyone on the court are last staffs recruits (McCormick, Norris, Timperly, Gayle, Barber, Stockman, Hornyak) so once they have their recruits in, we’ll get to see what their style/type is!  Next year has to have some improvement, in my opinion!

  6. This loss puts UND down two to SDSU for that final conference tournament spot. A lot can still happen, but this was a BIG one.

Uninspired volleyball tonight. Does McCormick bring all the energy? Lots of mistakes.  Norris and Gayle not good again, and Olson doesn’t see action. No timeouts taken in 4th set loss.

Middles were the bright spot. Love watching Stockman play and O’dell had a good match!

  7. Lost to Denver in 5 tonight, an improvement from 0-3 earlier this year. 3rd set was 38-36, I think the longest set I’ve ever seen.

Anyone confused why Ashlynn Olson isn’t playing? Keeping tabs on stats or two right sides, Norris and Gayle, consistently are hitting negative or close to zero for most matches. Olson has been our #1 hitter for the last two seasons, and she hasn’t gotten a chance. Must not have better practice stats or something. Just curious

  8. Can we go 2-0 vs NDSU in 4 days? I think yes. NDSU lost to St. Thomas on Saturday, so hopefully we can capitalize on that. We beat them there last year. Hopefully we don’t have anyone else out with injuries. Be confident and break our mini losing streak!

USD wins 3-2 with the 5th set going the distance at 18-16.  Sooooo close….

Played well, blocking was phenomenal! Too bad serve receive broke down at the end of the 5th. Pink jerseys were very fun!

Anyone notice how every game there are different girls on bench not dressed in uniform with headphones on? I can only imagine it’s concussions, but do we really have that many who get hit in the head?

  10. Ladies played great last night, just a couple more plays go our way and we get a win vs. one of the top teams in the summit who just beat USD.

seems like defense is set up to dig hard hit balls so they are far back, which means the tips are harder to get. Looks like they are back on their heels, so it’s harder to run forward to get them.

new rule the last few years is they can wear whatever they want on their lower body as long as it matches (all the same color). I like it, would probably make a lot of them more comfortable!

DENVER, CO --The Denver Pioneers totaled 12 blocks en route to a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks Thursday at home in their Summit League Opener.

The conference victory improved Denver's record to 2-7 overall and 1-0 in Summit League play.

They didn’t look good last night.
Hornyak on the bench in crutches.
    McCormick also wasn’t dressed.
Someone else was in a boot (Rivière perhaps). That could be why ball control was bad, but overall rough start to conference. Need to play better Saturday otherwise could lose to 2 teams picked lower than them in preseason pool.

They lost a game where they hadn’t played well. That doesn’t mean they are discouraged regarding the rest of the season, but I responded to a post regarding “everyone is pleased”.

I can understand why some fans wouldn’t be pleased, but I’m wondering how anyone here knows how the coaches and players are feeling.

We are 3-9 heading into conference. All I hear is how good we are and everyone is pleased??

Non conference is so subjective. Strength of schedule, teams with injuries, resting players, changing lineups. This week is when we really so how they stack up!

  14.  Lost in 3 to norther Iowa yesterday. Some subs were made at the end of the 3rd set. Lipetzki and Olson got in. They play Dayton today at noon. Hopefully ESPN+ works on my phone (been having issues….) Dayton is good, best NDSU in 4, so it’ll be good to see how we match up.

side note: Green Bay took USD to 5 sets!

    Another loss

    Women's Volleyball vs New Mexico
    UND Classic
    Grand Forks, N.D.

New Mexico is good. #88 in RPI, we are in the 200’s. I thought they played them tough. First set was phenomenal, but couldn’t sustain the energy, and both teams settled down for the rest of the match. #8 for UNM was fun to watch! Interesting that or two upperclassmen who have been on the court for two years didn’t play (Hornyak and Olsen). But figured out what happened to Gayle. Looked like a broken/dislocated/sprained pinkie.

I just saw Gayle was in a video posted on UND Volleyball's Instagram and Twitter.  Hopefully she is able to return to the team soon.  She also mentioned she has 3 years of eligibility left which is awesome!

    Does anyone know what happened?

Anyone know what happened to Gayle? She didn't make the trip to Bozeman but is still listed on the roster.

She’s wasn’t at the scrimmage either. I’m hoping she didn’t get injured again, she’s had a rough go of it.

looks like they switched up line ups for the three matches this weekend, so I wonder if they are playing around with rotations until they find one they like. Good problem to have if there are 3-4 decent options!

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota was selected to take home the Summit League volleyball regular season title, garnering 61 points and six first-place votes in the preseason coaches’ poll released Wednesday by league officials. The Coyotes have won at least a share of the regular season crown three times since joining the league, including a season ago. South Dakota held a seven-point advantage on North Dakota State to claim the top spot in the poll voted on by the league’s nine head coaches.

The Bison, who received two first-place votes, edged Omaha for the runner-up spot, finishing with 54 points. The Mavericks tallied 53 points and received the remaining first-place vote. South Dakota State claimed fourth with 39 points, while North Dakota accumulated 34 points to place fifth.

Denver (30) was predicted to finish sixth, while Kansas City (25) and St. Thomas (16) were projected to finish seventh and eighth, respectively. Oral Roberts rounded out the poll in ninth with 12 points.

2023 Summit League Volleyball Preseason Coaches’ Poll
Rank School Points (1st) 2022 Record (SL)
    1. South Dakota 61 (6) 29-4 (16-2)
    2. North Dakota State 54 (2) 21-12 (13-5)
    3. Omaha 53 (1) 20-11 (14-4)
    4. South Dakota State 39 18-15 (11-7)
    5. North Dakota 34 12-18 (9-9)
    6. Denver 30 19-12 (12-6)
    7. Kansas City 25 10-21 (7-11)
    8. St. Thomas 16 4-26 (2-16)
    9. Oral Roberts 12 9-21 (6-12)

Seems about right, that’s where we ended last year. I think we’ll finish better, but preseason polls are kind of just guessing based on returners. We’ve improved the roster quite a bit since last fall, which they don’t really take into account. Hopefully it’ll give the team some motivation to end up higher than this!

  19. Can’t wait to get in the gym and see their new talent. Looks like they’ll have some big arms in the middle with the MSU transfer and the Texas freshman, so hopefully more stability in the middle opposite of Stockman. Norris and Timperly in the 6/2? Anyone at the scrimmage to see what their top line up looks like? I’m excited to see if Izzy McCormick will step into the libero role that Carney had last year.

I wonder if preseason will look like last year where every set had a different lineup.
