  1. Don't know, from reading this thread, there appears to be a score of good goaltenders from ND this year. Hillman, Rosenthal, Kringstad, Deichert... and maybe a few others.

My question is this: Has there been any other year where posters can say that there were more than 2 notable goaltenders for the season at the conclusion of the season? It seems to be that, whether it is a GF school or South, there seems to be one dominating goaltender a season. This year there are much more than that.

2000 - 2001 was a good year. I don't know about out the west, but the east had Ziegelmann, Lamoureaux, and Walski.

  2. South has now won 3 state titles since 1994. Only Red River has more during that time.

Last year I thought South had a good chance to win state and was told by a few people that "Fargo people say that every year" and it turned out I was wrong... last year. This year I once again thought they had a good chance and, once again, was informed that "Fargo people say that every year". Use that arrogant phrase every year and it's bound to eventually blow up in your face. I wonder what the "Fargo people say that every year" crowd has to say for themselves now?

Congratulations to Fargo South on a great win. I look forward to watching some of their players in the future as they continue their hockey careers.

    DaveK,

I am one of the people who disagrees that there is a 'passing of the torch' to Fargo South, even with this vicotry. However, I did state earlier in this thread that they were 'heavy favorites' in my mind, so I am not surprised with the outcome. We'll just have to wait and see how it plays out in the future. My difference of opinion is just that -- nothing personal.

  3. Now, I'll tell you why Fargo South will establish itself as the best team in the state within the next few years... quite simply, they have the best players. Did you know the Fargo Flyers squirts A team is 35-0? These kids are going to be playing for South a few years down the road, and will very likely destroy everybody that gets in their way in a fashion not seen since the 1983-84 Central Redskins. Just take a look at some of these scores I pulled off the Flyers website...

    12/04/04 - Flyers 8, GF Blackhawks 2

    12/04/04 - Flyers 6, GF Supras 0

    12/17/04 - Flyers 14, Warroad 0

    12/18/04 - Flyers 3, Roseau 0

    12/19/04 - Flyers 7, Warroad 1

    12/28/04 - Flyers 8, Grafton 1

    01/02/05 - Flyers 5, Moorhead 3

    01/09/05 - Flyers 4, Roseau 2

    01/16/05 - Flyers 1, GF Supras 0

    01/31/05 - Flyers 11, Moorhead 5

GF has all the history and tradition, but the future of ND hockey dominance is in Fargo (at least on the south side of town). Enjoy your all GF final tomorrow night, because it could be a long time before you see another one. Not that I'm going to act like a butthead and gloat about it if and when I am proven right about this, I'm just saying that judging by what I've seen with my own eyes the kids who play hockey in the Fargo youth program are superior players to the kids who play in the GF youth program. That isn't to say the GF players aren't good, it's that the Fargo kids are really really good.

To whoever it was who made the statement earlier about how South can't possibly go on a run of 5 titles in 10 years because they only have 2 in their history so far... if I remember correctly Red River only had 2 in their history prior to winning 9 titles in 15 years (1987-2001). Think about that one for a while. Every winning tradition has its humble beginnings.

    DaveK,

Agree with you that the numbers of kids playing hockey in South Fargo is very impressive; however, I don't share your opinion on youth hockey players in Fargo being superior. Perhaps the difference is that we are looking at different age groups. South ran up gaudy regular season records in both peewee A and bantam A (which is helped by the fact that those levels do north/south bracketing), yet both state championships went to GF teams. You may be correct in your prediction, but I don't think long-term dominance (although FS should be a favorite next year) at the high school level is close at hand.

On another note -- does anyone know what happened to Minot because both their peewee and bantams teams posted terrible records last year.

  4. Red River and Central earned their state championship game spots, but tonight at seven we wont be watching the two best teams in the state, thats a fact.  We will be watching the two teams who just happend to come to play at the right time.  You can go on how this is their tradition and they are playoff teams but I doubt that has much to do with it.

It depends on how you want to define the 'best team'. I'm sure UND would have loved to trade spots with Denver last year. I define the best team as the one winning the tournament championship. Regular season titles are very impressive accomplishments but there is a reason a tournament champion is crowned as well as remembered. Don't discount the quality of the GF teams because their regular seasons weren't up to past standards.

  5. I think Drew Sando will exceed every expectation placed upon in his 4+ years at UND. He's a local product with an outstanding work ethic, big time speed and strength, and a role player that this team needs. He did score 12 goals last year-not alot by anyone's standards especially UND's. But he played on a terrible team with a coach that acted more like a kid at times than his players. He is surrounded by stucture and discpline that could potentially stamp all-American on hockey resume before he leaves.

He's a 4.0 student who will be an asset to this team on and off the ice. Look for him to do incredible things.

All American potential?! Silly me I was simply hoping he would make the team. 12 goals in 55 games does not illustrate sniper potential regardless of the coaching/off-ice issues. I don't think it's fair to heap accolades and high expectations on Moreland and Sando until 1) they make the team and 2) they earn some ice time. I would love to see them both make it and actually be good enough to play, but I'm taking a wait and see approach at this time.

  6. This is an interesting topic.  I played with a kid in Minot who transfered to Red River right after tryouts got over.  He didn't make our varsity, so he went like the next week to Red River and he made like their second line.  In his three years at Red River he helped them win two state championships.  Red River is just as guilty as the private schools of recruiting players.  Grafton Park River got a kid from Williston when they won state a couple of years back.  The kid won a state tennis title at Williston in the Fall, and then won a state hockey title in the Winter, sounds pretty fishy to me..... :D

I don't really mind when private schools have in-state transfers, but its when they go out of state that it starts to bother me.

So how did Kresbach not make varisty on Minot's team? Sounds like Samson made a pretty big mistake there.

I don't have a problem with players moving to a different high school in their same town (provided they are not doing this all the time), but I don't like to see them switching cities for hockey only.

  7. I'm definitely torn on this one. On one hand, I have seen Beaverson play several games each of the past two years and don't think he would have much of an impact (but I am no expert); however, I don't want to see a trend of UND not honoring verbals where someone has planned on attending the school for almost 2 years.

  8. Pretty mobile for his size. Can move the puck up the ice and is a smart player. He's really matured into his role this year.

I'm no talent scout either, but according to his coach, he's got alot of college interest and could really pick where he wants to go. I'm thinking UMD, but no confirms yet.

About the '-15 to +33' Let's just say we had alot coaching problems last season. 3 years at 27 wins. Change of coach and they went to 43 wins.

I am no scout or expert, but I saw Tri-City play a couple of games each of the past two years and here are my thoughts. Last year, I didn't notice him at all. This year I did. He logged a ton of ice time and was very solid. Seemed mobile and good with the puck, but I wouldn't project him to add much offense in college; he struck me as a stay-at-home defenseman. Plays with a mean streak and absolutely owned the front of the net. Even though they had some coaching issues last year he was still very near the bottom of the team in plus/minus, but he improved a lot this year. Overall, he would be a good catch for any school -- I thought he played better than this year than Beaverson, but I only saw each guy twice.

  9. Another Shattuck player to keep an eye on is Okposo. He is a 10th grade forward with 88 points (41 goals) on the year and is from St. Paul. He has decent size already (5'11" 180) and could be a force in the upcoming years.

  10. A little perspective - Hrkac had more points in his sophomore season than Parise had in both his years combined.  Yes it was a different era, but telling nontheless.

IMO, Parise is behind many players in terms of where he will rank as a COLLEGE player, such as Taylor, Smail, T. Murray, Sykes, Patrick, Hrkac, Joyce, S. Johnson, G. Johnson, Blake, Panzer, Goehring, among others.

I would agree. ZP has a ton of talent and hopefully a great NHL career ahead of him, but I would put him behind the players mentioned above. In addition, if Bo stays next year, I would put him ahead of Parise.

  11. Actually, if we're talking recent history... it's pretty even. Central and South have both participated in the state tournament 6 of the last 8 years. If you want to go way back I won't disagree that South's program didn't measure up. I think in the years since their first state championship in 1994, they have established themselves as one of the top teams in the state. If the Fargo Flyers squirts team is any indication of what lies ahead of us, look out!!! They beat the GF Blues red team this year 7-0, 10-3, and and 7-0. They beat the GF Supras 11-0, 17-1, and 4-1. The only GF team that could compete with them was the GF Blues blue team. They played three times. The Blues won the first game 5-1, the second game was a 5-5 tie, and the Flyers won the third game 5-0. The Flyers squirts also beat Warroad twice, 5-0 and 3-1... and split two games with Roseau, a 5-3 win and a 2-1 loss. Overall they were 28-4-1.

I think you are relying a little too much on numbers. Let's put it like this: if you were an opposing coach over this time frame, who would you least like to play? I would put Fargo South behind RR, Cent, and GPR during this time, but I am admittedly biased; however, I think the majority of people would place them there.

Jloos, that 1994 FS team beat one of Central's most talented teams in the '90s. There were at least 5 future DI guys who ran into a stone wall that night.

  12. didn't really mean to imply that they would take over from Central and/or Red River. I was implying that I think they will join Central and Red River among the elite. Remember that prior to winning the last two state titles, Central had only won as many as South (two) over the previous 18 years. South was only 47 seconds away from winning their 3rd state championship this year, which would have equalled the number that Central has won over the last 20 years.

I agree Fargo South should get better in the future. GF hockey seems to cycle between Central and Red River being the best in the state. For a long stretch it was RR, now it's Central. We'll see how it plays out in the future, but I don't see Fargo South quite being on equal footing with the top school; it could be comparable to the other one though.

The biggest reason I can see for both GF teams falling off is if more kids leave early to play Juniors. It's tough to project which team is going be the best in the future because of players leaving early. I think FS lost some players (Magura and Bye?) to juniors early while Central lost Simonson and 2 lammies this year; the most talented bantam players may not be around to play at all in high school. The USHL's age requirements do not do any favors to high school teams.

I am definitely conflicted on the issue of players moving to juniors early. While I understand a player's desire to play the best competition that they can, I like to see the towns that produce the best talent/team actually win state. On the other hand, I would like to see as many ND kids as possible play DI which moving to juniors early should help.

  13. There are some other scenarios where UND can fall to 2, but I can't figure out a way to move them down to #3 without using bonus points which I don't know how to do properly.

If the Sioux are #1 seed (2nd team overall) and Michigan does not win the CCHA tourney, it could lead to Umich falling far enough in the rankings where they would be the #2 seed in the regional, meaning the Sioux may have to play the Wolverines in Grand Rapids. Not the best matchup, but at least it wouldn't be at Yost.

It would probably be best for UND if Maine losses and Michigan wins this weekend. Let UMD or MN go out to Grand Rapids and send the Sioux to the springs.
