Paranoid rationalization? Is that what you read? Interesting interpretation.

If you're not satisfied with a top 20 FCS finish and a playoff loss, you  obviously have plenty of company. I think UND should be doing better, too.

Frustrated at the loss of two coaches -- one after more than a dozen years, another after five -- to higher-paying and perceived higher status programs? Agree wholeheartedly, and hopefully it adds fuel to the fire to improve coaches' salaries here.

Don't think Bubba can move the program further forward? You may be right, though I hardly think "greedy" is a fair description of the man.

But when two coaches leaving after a 7-5 season and a playoff appearance  is breathlessly sold as a "cratering" of the program, a dumpster fire,  a sinking  of the Titanic, it seems obvious rationality has left the building.  Hyperbole is the mother's milk of sports message boards, to be sure,  but if we ditched some of the hysterics it might be easier to have a realistic discussion on this forum on problems and solutions.

Do you think it's possible that some of the ideas of dumpster fire, cratering, etc. are just relaying a message from those still within the program?

What/who is the elephant in the room in this case?

UND football leadership. I'm speaking to those who are pretending not to notice any difference between a young coach leaving SDSU and a young coach leaving UND right now.

I'm confused as well. If coaches leave, that automatically means that things are going bad in a program? Or is there some sort of arbitrary test that is applied to see whether it is beneficial for ones argument?

Pretty sure NDSU lost their head coach (to be LB coach at USC??), OC (to take the same job in a worse conference for a worse team and then had to steal UND's?) and also multiple assistants. Are things in a tailspin there?

Call it arbitrary if that makes you feel better, but I think it's pretty easy to see that our coaches are leaving due to things not going great, and the same does not apply to NDSU currently. Also, are you implying that NDSU head coach going to LB coach at USC is a step down?

And screwing people has consequences. That's also life.

Ralph Engelstad liked doing business with a handshake and hated dealing with pages and pages of legalese. Those days are over, unfortunately.

Landry stabbed us in the back. He is persona non grata as far as I am concerned.

He didn’t stab anyone in the back. Spring ball hasn’t started, and he doesn’t owe anyone here anything. If this season goes poorly I sure hope he doesn’t get blamed, that would be a pretty convenient excuse. As another poster said, I think UND football leadership needs to take a good look in the mirror if they are looking for problems.

    This right here.........1000%

What is the commitment though? That's what I am struggling with. It is not uncommon in any sports to leave/be fired before your contract is up, or before your eligibility is up. In general, of course honoring your commitment and honoring your word is a big deal in life. BUT, where I get lost in this whole thing is what exactly is the requisite commitment in the sports contract world?

not sure of the exact time needed but it is certainly longer than 8 days.

Is it relevant or not that a much better opportunity presented itself that didn't exist 8 days earlier? If he stays this year and then goes to a better opportunity does that somehow make this better or different? I'd feel different about the whole thing if the NDSU job had been open at the time he was hired at UND. But it wasn't, and there was zero indication that there would be a better opportunity elsewhere.

Integrity matters. I don't care what aspect of life you are talking about. If you don't have integrity, everything else is meaningless.

I am really sick of the whole "You can't blame someone for doing whatever they want" thinking. Landry stabbed all of us in the back. If you want to applaud him, go right on ahead. But don't expect me to join you.

How long would he have to stay here to qualify as having integrity? 1 year? 5 years? I'm not applauding anyone for anything. I'm just not blaming someone for going a different route after circumstances changed.

An embarrassment, a black eye for UND football for sure -- and a perfect opportunity to trot out your daily diatribe again Schweigert -- but this one's 100% on Landry. He was offered and accepted the OC position at a top 20 FCS program, then bolted in less than 10 days for a similar job at UND's chief rival, clearly hurting his alma mater. His decision, not Bubba's or Chaves'.

If you think the OC at NDSU is a "similar" job other than having the same title, versus the OC at UND, I don't think you have much of a feel for how college football works. Do you think the OC of Arkansas is a similar job to the OC of Georgia just because they are in the same conference?

If Landry had went straight from St. Thomas to NDSU, that wouldn't bother me that much.

But he took job at UND, blubbered about how happy he was to be back.......and then stabbed Bubba and the rest of us in the back on his way out the door to NDSU.

It's fairly obvious he used the UND offer to get the NDSU one. Disgusting.

But whomever wants to cheer him on down there so you can "be a part of it", go right on ahead.

Landry is now the enemy and should be treated as such.

The NDSU job was not open when he took the UND job. Tyler Roehl didn't leave NDSU until this week. I am guessing he meant what he said when he was excited to come back to UND and that he had no intentions of going elsewhere. But things can change very quickly these days in regards to new opportunities. What is the statute of limitations on giving someone your "word"? If a better opportunity comes up at any time, whether it be your first day or 2 years into a job, a person can't be blamed for wanting to explore it, whether that be a student-athlete, a coach, or any person in the community in their normal occupation.

First, you're never going to get an official diagnosis on an athlete's injury. Obviously, we can see the play that knocked Mismash out of the lineup.  I also believe there are issues with the HIPAA. Maybe one of our lawyers can fill us in if they know something about that.

You don't find it odd that there have been no questions or comments, or even a hint of anything, from anyone surrounding the team? Name another physical injury for UND where nobody says a word.

Apparently it's "undisclosed". JJ and Rhett were at the Kane Brown show last night buying beers and having a good time.  No "apparent" injury.

It seems to me that nobody is really talking about JJ that is involved with the team (i.e. players or Schlossman). Could it be something that isn't being talked about because nobody wants to touch the topic, or even ask about it, including the beat writer? That leads me to believe we may be dealing with a very sensitive subject here that is "off limits" for questions or comments...

Because scoring isn't something that just translates no matter what level to level. There are plenty of examples of players who weren't big point producers in juniors and something clicked once they reached college, and vice versa. It's all about recognizing who can bring it at the next level and who can't. This staff is having a seriously tough time doing that and it's not down to just "puck luck".

I understand it doesn't just translate by default. They swung and (so far) missed on all four of those guys. To go 0 for 4 isn't normal. Again, the part I struggle with is it's not like UND's staff is the only staff who wanted these guys. Every top school did. That does not make it any better or easier to swallow. It makes it more confusing as to how it happened to everyone they got.

I watched the game.  Everything starts at the point when it should be the other way around.  90% of those closer shots result after the defensive player already has taken the perimeter shot.  Either one of our forward scrambled to retrieve it and fire something on net.  It’s not a “quality scoring chance”.  Name me one time the forwards were able to create something themselves that didn’t appear to be 4th line grind material.  Any backdoor passes? Creating space and finding an open forward in the slot?  Never.  When the forwards get the puck they only look to get it back for a perimeter shot.  100% of the time.

we had a couple scoring opportunities last night.  Should have more than a couple every period.

I also watched the whole game. Regardless of if the shot originated at the point or not, I would consider a rebound attempt from in the slot to be a quality scoring chance. This team is not talented enough in general to be looking for backdoor passes or beating a defender one on one to find an open forward in the slot. We don't have a Nick Schmaltz or anything in the same stratosphere. We don't have a Brock Boeser or anything in the same stratosphere. Our d are the team's best asset, why wouldn't they use that to their advantage?

Based on the above, unless a player creates it themselves or it's a tic-tac-toe play, do you not consider it a "scoring opportunity"? Look, I'm as frustrated as anyone at the obvious lack of talent at forward on this team. It isn't puck luck, it's just that they aren't very good. But to suggest they should play a "prettier" style of hockey and look for backdoor passes, or creating their own space and finding an open forward...I'm sorry, I just can't agree with that for this year's team.

This USHL scoring as it should translate to the NCAA needs to stop.

I'm going to disagree with you here. The USHL is the top junior league in North America. It obviously isn't a apples to apples comparison, but I would say in general if you are a top offensive guy in the ushl, it will translate into at least a fairly productive college career.

It's not that these guys are "that bad." This team is just missing that one or two Grade A players that make everyone around them better.

"Janatuinen, Hoff, Mismash, Adams," While decent players aren't players you can build National Championship rosters around alone.

To clarify, I used those 4 names as guys brought in as "top 6" guys that don't produce like top 6 guys.

Agree that it is somewhat of a mystery - I think Berry and crew are seriously misjudging who can perform at the next level. There are guys in every sport who cant adjust to the next level - we seem to be getting all of them.   No one can be snakebit for their entire career - let alone everyone.

I don't know if it's just Berry on those guys though. I believe every one of them was pretty highly sought after by all the top schools. It's not like we were the only ones after them. I'm not saying that makes it any better, just adds to the mystery in my mind.

  17. 1 minute ago, Irish said:

It's lack of talent up front - pure and simple.  Teams can get snakebit for a game, maybe 2 or 3 in a row, but not for two plus seasons.  The game is faster here and we don't have guys who can keep up.  We don't have the speed or puck skills.  Watch our "Power" Play - when pressured we have an extremely hard time even gaining the zone and setting up.  When we do, we spend an enormous amount of time teeing it up out front - the defense always has time to adjust - we don't have the skills for quick passes and movement.  Of the top 50 freshman scorers in the country there are NO UND players - none.  There is absolutely no excuse for this lack of talent at our school - none.  This with the best facilities, fans, history in the country 3 years after our 8th National Championship.  All "culture" no talent.  It's nice we have guys who will support a teammate in a mile run.   It would be much nicer if we had guys who could also score.  Berry and company have a serious recruiting problem and we see the results on the ice.  Time for Berry to go.  If we are relying on next year's class to save us we are delusional.

Agree with the fact that it's clearly a lack of talent at this level. However, I just am not sure how a bunch of the guys that were actually high scorers at a high junior level all of the sudden can't produce. Janatuinen, Hoff, Mismash, Adams all put up basically right around a point per game in the USHL.

An NCAA banned substance that was not on the label of the supplement?

That is correct. You see it all the time even in pro sports. The NCAA does not regulate the supplement labeling market.

From where?  Our only shots originate from the point.  Zero cycling and containment down low.  This team will never see a goal with all three forwards in on it.

as I’ve mentioned too many times, when we have the puck in the ozone the first, second, and third option is going out to the point for a perimeter shot.  That play is supposed to be used as an outlet...to catch the Dzone players sleeping.  Our boys only do that.  It’s like running a play action in football every play.  DU knew none of our forwards would even attempt to beat them low.

Look at the shot chart from last night and tell me all the shots were from the perimeter. Especially in the first period when they dominated. I count at least 10 shots that resulted in saves in the first period alone that were from between the circles and below the faceoff dot.

Is it possible that the system at UND curtails production?

I say no........the quality chances this team gets most games is ridiculous.

I have no answers. IMO this team at worst should be 17-8-1 right now.

I don't really think so. I can't explain it. A system doesn't cause you to forget how to pick a corner.

The boys played a good road game last night but the NCHC its not enough when you can’t score. We have no pure goal scorers. This shouldn’t be a surprise to our coaches either as none of these guys were pure goal scorers in juniors or high school. Bad thing is we have none coming in next year also.

I don't know how you are defining "pure goal scorer" but a lot of these guys were very high end offensive guys in high school/juniors that just for whatever reason haven't continued to develop that part of the game. Also, next year we have Pinto (Tied for 6th in goals in ushl) and Blaisdell (3rd in BCHL in goals) coming in. Both high end talents so far that have shown they can score.

  22. Last night in a vacuum: go on the road against a top 5 team, completely carry play, outshoot, and outchance them, and lose 2-1. That's just fine.

Unfortunately last night is not in a vaccum. And this has happened too many times now. Sweep canisius and you're 15-10-1 and probably about 9-10 in pairwise. That series hurt them more than we can fathom.
