  1. Goon is right about comparing Kavelog to Brandt. Brandt has had three years to take the job and has not done so. If he was such a great leader there would be no question as to who the starter is. He is a senior and is battling a fresh and a soph for the job. It should not even be an argument but unfortunately it is.

  2. This statement can't possibly be backed with facts. How do you know what happens in practice, the locker room, during games on the bench, etc? I have talked to many people about Brandt, his work ethic, and his attitude and have never once heard his character labeled as "questionable." Sure, he had some rough games, but he also had some huge ones. Ability and performance are not and should not be directly related to character. If that were the case, remember Bochenski's slump? I am sure you would not ever consider calling his character anything even close to questionable. Mark my words, Brandt will prove to be a huge asset to our team this year from his leadership to his locker room and practice attitude and even (GASP!!) from his play on the ice during big games.

Actually I would question Bo' character more than Brandt's just because of the way he strung the team along. Now he will find out that "earning" money is different than "making" money. As far as Brandt goes, here is your fact about character:

As far as my statement regarding winning a title, the fact that J Parise started the most important game of the year as a Freshman (obviously the last game) speaks volumes as to Brandt's ability to bring home #8 for the Sioux.

  3. The Sioux will not win a title with Brandt as a starter. It will have to be Parise or Lammy. It is sad that a player who by all accounts is a good person and a promising player (ziggy) ends up leaving while a goalie of questionable character (brandt) gets to stay. I guess we have to keep the Roseau pipeline, or at least whats left of it, happy.

  4. First of all, you're not hearing me, pal. I'm certainly not denying the fact that the camps the Burggrafs run are excellent for improving skating skills. I've heard from numerous sources that they are great. However, a coaches skills are determined by how well his team does for it's talent level. According to your recent claims, Shanley must have been loaded with even more talent than South because of those three players. Thus the Burggrafs must be terrible coaches for not even making it to the State Tournament. And yes, I do want to compare the Burggrafs to Wilson. Wilson has two rings, will the Burggrafs ever be able to make that claim?(highly doubtful) Second, I apologize for the shot against Graalum, but it's important to note that he must have been one of the oldest players in the state. When I saw him play, he was 19 and was playing against some players who were 15 and 16.

p.s. I'm not a Flyer or a disgruntled South player. I do attend Fargo South and will be a senior next year. I've never played hockey but my brother played for Wilson several years ago. I'm just happy to be going back to the best school in the the state next year.

Maybe best school in the state that isn't located in Grand Forks.

  5. FT, that is no proof, even if you end up being right.

For an optimist, you sure sound bitter.

The team is practically bankrupt and has gone periods of time without paying its players (2 years ago I believe). They are not throwing around million dollar contracts to marginal NHL prospects.

  6. this is a bunch of BS. The Sens can't even pay the players they have in the NHL. There is no way that they are throwing much money at Bochenski. That is your proof that whatever offer there is, it must be a rather minimal one. I am not doom and gloom but the Sioux will be affected by the loss of Bochenski and Zpar. However, I choose to look at the glass as half full rather than half empty. At least now in the future, people can take a $100 bill from Bochenski without wondering if it is real.

  7. If this is true, let me be the first to say that Bochenski leaving early seems alot like when Lundbohm left early. Both knew that they had just lost their playmaker. I wish Bochenski well but I do not see him anywhere near ready to make the jump. Come on Bochenski, come back for your senior year and prove that you can be a stud without Parise.

  8. I don't think a civilian business would move into Grand Forks AFB if it closed, at least not anytime soon. The communities that survive base closures the best are bigger cities that have grown right up to or around the base. For example, Luke AFB, AZ, if that base closed, which it probably wouldn't, developers would make a mint because Pheonix is growing and land is valuable. Without the Grand Forks AFB, all you have is a barren, windblown, aklai field. Just my opinion.

  9. At first I wasn't going to offer my two cents to this topic but being a grad from the west and a strong supporter of bis high and century, I had to speak up. I have many friends who played on east teams that I met in college at UND and can state for a fact that the east believes they are superior to the west. Granted, I do see far better hockey out east, but my belief is that they are more established due to the simple fact that they are closer to minnesota (obviously superior hockey to ND). Switch the west with the east and have them play the likes of warroad, roseau, and so on and you will see a vast improvement in play. I will agree that the east is a better quality of hockey, but to hear over and over that the west isn't even "considered" to be worthwhile really makes me upset. I think I'll start considering teams from the east to be non-existent when it comes to BB, FB (the only worthwhile FB team is West Fargo), and so on.

You just made everyone's point without realizing it. Have you ever wondered why it is that the East is best at hockey while the West usually has the edge in Football and Basketball? Maybe the best atheletes in the West gravitate towards FB and BB while the best atheletes in the East tend to play hockey. It is not rocket science. I moved to Grand Forks from Bismarck during Junior High and the interest in hockey is not even close. In Bismarck, the big event was watching the BHS vs CHS basketball game. Here in Grand Forks, most people don't even know when there is a GFC/RRHS Basketball game going on. Different strokes for different folks.

  10. Obviously every goalie's stats are enhanced by the defense corps in front of him. But this perception about Jake Brandt's shortcomings continually leave me scratching my head. It's not Jake Brandt's fault he arrived at UND the year following Karl Goehring's graduation.

The past two seasons, Jake Brandt has put up numbers that rival any goalie not named Goehring in the history of Sioux hockey. He has continually won big game after big game, and has often been our best player in big games that we didn't win (Final Five vs. UMD two years ago, for example). Yet all I ever seem to read about on this board is how Jake's spot is in jeopardy, or Jake is the inferior goalie on the team, blah blah blah blah.

From where I sit, Dean was not the biggest problem as far as our goalies' psyche. The biggest problem is lack-of-faith from the fans.

Mark my words: UND can win a national championship with Jake between the pipes. And let's not forget who Minnesota managed to win back-to-back titles with - Adam Hauser and Travis Weber.

    'Nuff said.

I would rather go with the idea that the Sioux should win a title with Jpar or Lammy in net rather than they can win with Brandt.

Brandt is a flopper which will lead to him having the occasional huge game but will also lead to a lot of games where you leave shaking your head. JPar is by far the steadier, more consistent goalie regardless of what stats say.

  11. If I am not mistaken, Adam Hauser is statistically among the best Gopher goaltenders of all time and we all know what a sieve he was. He usually choked in the big games and rarely stole a game for the Gophers (just like Brandt for the Sioux). Although I guess you could call the no call hack job in OT on the Maine player in the Forzen Four "stealing".

  12. Those 4 goalies are a little different than what the Sioux will have this year. Sofie and Ranfranz were walk-on's that weren't even looked to at the beginning of the year for any sort of playing time.

What about the memorable Todd Jones, Jeff Lembke, Chris Dickson trio?

  13. I like Brandt he should be even better this year Jpar will switch with Brandt like last year. i think ziggy is out and lammy is redshirt.

If Lammy redshirts, won't he be as old as Steve DeBus when he completes his eligibility?

  14. Honestly where in the roatation would Marc had played last season?

I can't fault Blais for that one.

Probably the same place in the rotation that Ziegleman was at. I know Ranfranz was not a great goalie, but he was loyal, and did everything that UND asked of him. DB could have at least cut him early enough to give him the option of going elsewhere.

  15. Cut Brandt and go with the other three. Seriously, someone has to go. What are the Sioux going to do, rotate Brandt and Parise at away games and Ziegleman and Lamourex at home games? Four is too many. Though I doubt that Hakstol will be as willing to cut seniors as DB was (Ranfranz)

  16. The thing is, the only people getting hurt are the old farts who go there to chat with their friends rather than pay attention to the games, and the young kids that don't know any better. To those old farts, pay attention to the game, especially pre game warmups.

As far as the young kids go, parents pay attention. Enjoy the game but be ready to cover your kid at a moments's notice. My son is now 9 and i have been taking him to games since 1997. We have had season tickets just above the glass behind the goalie every single year. Have there been close calls, yes, but I have never seen anyone that was paying attention get hurt.
