I’ve been reading all of this stuff about Faison and how awful he is, and I want to throw my two cents in. Although I realize some pretty terrible stuff has happened and everyone wants to point a finger at someone, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and believe they did the best that they could and what is best for the majority. I’m not saying Faison or anyone else at UND is perfect or correct in their decisions, but I think that bashing people does more harm than good for everyone, fans included.
My understanding is that Faison tried to make as many cuts as possible, even going above the 10% reduction that the president wanted, but Schafer said that teams needed to be cut. There was a formula or calculated method to figuring out how to cut expenses, not cut off revenue, stay compliant with Title IX, and impact the fewest people possible. Baseball & men’s golf came out to be the combination that fit all of those categories the best. It really sucks that teams had to be cut, especially ones that have had recent success and looked to be turning things around. Would we be having the same argument if women’s hockey were cut instead of baseball? WH is a revenue-generating sport (although not much) that is consistently in the Top 10 every year and beat two #1 teams last season. If anyone else has a better idea that cuts more expenses without stopping revenue and you still are compliant with the NCAA/Title IX, submit your application for the next AD or UND’s CFO.
The baseball fundraising letter situation: yeah, that was handled poorly by Faison, and he admitted it. He should have at least answered the letter/email to explain why they can or cannot do anything and maybe find ways that can help. Of course the fundraising situation as well as the announcement of cutting baseball & golf could have been handled better. It isn’t easy for anyone. Also, it’s a matter that is over and done with, nothing is going to change.
Think about the things that Faison HAS done well for UND: transition to Divison I and the Big Sky; helped create the most dominant conference in college hockey; pushed for better facilities for teams and recruiting; emphasized academics as the primary concern of student-athletes; brought back a fan-favorite coach (Bubba) that people believe in and get excited about; kept the best coach in college hockey with Brad Berry; and ensuring that student-athletes in the future will be able to afford their education by doing full cost of attendance for all sports. It is easier to stew about the mistakes and bad decisions, but with everything he (and the rest of the administration) has done, don’t you think he is genuinely concerned about UND’s future and that he probably really does hurt from having to make these tough decisions?
One last thing to end my rant: students and community members have been complaining about cutting baseball and men’s golf so there are no administrators that need to take a pay cut. That is garbage. Schafer said every line item is on the table, so did Alice Brekke. Athletics administration IS going to have salary reductions/job eliminations, guaranteed. No one is exempt from the shortfall.
Thank you for reading

Link to the budget cuts. Some explanation of what has been cut but not much

Anybody know when or where the proposed budget cuts are going to be posted online today?

Thus far I'm not hearing about cuts to administration, which is disappointing.
There will probably be a few admins cut, considering they can cut salary, insurance, and any other benefits to save money. Like Talksalot83 said:

Given the fallout from Tuesday's announcement about baseball & men's golf, that still leaves $165-170k in expenses that still need to be cut. Where else can the athletic department trim budgets? I can't imagine they would dare p*ss off any other teams and take money from them.

The Bison are bad; but not that bad. We'll be lucky to break 80.
Looks like there are a few more than 80 tickets sold already. Are you using NDSU math skills?

Anyone have a prediction for attendance tonight?
Last year was 3142

It's over. Own it. Make it the best of all the "Hawks" out there. Continue to dominant and be the best fans in college sports.

They should punch those tickets at the end of the game.
They usually do

Student attendance should be a little better tomorrow since they have priority line for men's hockey that night, but probably still not what it should be. I'd say anything over 6,500 would be great...probably closer to 6,000-6,200.

I really don't understand how people could still be angry about this other than they want the winner to be Roughriders no matter if that's what the majority wants.
Probably right.
Any bets on how long it takes for a lawsuit to be filed by Red River HS or Mayor "Hawk" from Bismarck (who apparently owns everything) claiming that UND is stealing their trademark name?
-
This just in.... Twamley says a third vote could be an option to ensure at least a 50 percent majority.
http://und.edu/news/2015/10/new-runoff-voting.cfm
Why don't we just have a round robin tournament of voting? All three together, then Fighting Hawks vs. Nodaks, Roughriders vs. Fighting Hawks, Nodaks vs. Roughriders, then vote again between the three of them? Or maybe President Kelly wants to change his mind again and bring more names back into the conversation? What a clustermuck this has become.

So sad to see that happen. Only 60 years old too. RIP Flip

My ranking of the possible nicknames (just my opinion):
5. Sundogs - sounds like a minor league baseball team name than a Division I university
4. North Stars - "been there, done that, got the t-shirt". Plus, it was a Minnesota name to begin with; let's have something more unique and North Dakota-ish, which leads me to...
3. Nodaks - The name itself isn't great. When you hear "Nodak", what comes to mind? A warrior? An animal? A guy named Dale in a Pioneer Seed hat talking about the weather (like North Dakotans do). That's the one good point about this name: it is very open-ended and can be left open for everyone's own interpretation. Who knows...the logo might be better than what people expect?
2. Fighting Hawks - Yes, it's not very creative. Yes, it's still a "Fighting" name. However, hawks could have strong ties to Native American heritage (cough Sioux cough), so it could still satisfy people's itch to call the team the Fighting Sioux. "UND Fighting Sio......Hawks". Plus, how awesome would it be to have a hawk screeching and swoop down from the rafters of the Ralph or Alerus Center right before the game?
And my #1 choice for UND's new nickname.....
1. Roughriders - It's 100% North Dakota through & through. Teddy Roosevelt was a bada$$ President and outdoorsman. The only issue, of course, is that Red River has the name already; however, UND can take the name and make the logo more intense and intimidating than a cartoon or a silhouette of a horse. Most importantly, how great would it be to have this song playing right before kick-off/tip/puck-drop/first serve: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihN3aHuBTfM

Any predictions on the record this season?
I'll say 13-16 overall, 8-10 in Big Sky
-
The Europe trip gave a little bit of hope, but they still have a long ways to go. As long as they don't lose to UM-Morris, Waldorf, or Valley City State, I'll be hopeful; a loss or very close game with any of those teams, and I'm done.

ISU 24

Any predictions on attendance? 9,000+ would be great

I think more night games (except when the hockey team is town) would be helpful. It might not help with the students, who may not want to "waste" a Saturday night on a football game, but it would certainly help with adults. Lots of adults have kid activities, and other responsibilities, on Saturdays. It may not always be practical to start tailgating at 10:00 a.m. and not get home until 5:00. I could not get away with that 5 or 6 times a fall.
But it appears UND likes the 1:00 start. Maybe UND perceives it as an advantage in the Big Sky where opponents are in the mountain and pacific time zones.
A lot of it has to do with ROOT Sports and the rights they have to broadcast games. It's not always up to UND to decide the gametimes, although they have a say in it.
-
I guess it's not just us
No. Even the mighty Nick Saban can't get fans (particularly students) to stay at Alabama games. It's an epidemic, so to speak.

UND students learn the Hockey traditions by going to the games and having the same thing happen every game. After a couple of games they catch on. The first few games every year the freshman aren't involved but then they learn. Football has no traditions to start with it seems for students any more. It needs to start with gameday production. If every year the intro song and things are different its hard for students to get a tradition in for that similar to what they do with In the Air Tonight at the Ralph. They get pumped up to it because they know its time for UND HOCKEY, just like VT gets pumped to Enter Sandman.
Agreed. Seems like they're trying find something that sticks with people right away, but it can't stick if they keep changing it.
I went to Red River's Homecoming game against West Fargo, and the 30-40 students that West Fargo that came along were more into that game than our students are.

It's great that they buy the ticket and support the program, but if you're standing on the walkways for almost 3 hours just drinking beer, why should they lower ticket prices for you to do that? Go to a bar: it's free admission and drinks are cheaper. If you want to be at the game, sure; stand on the walkways, but CHEER! If it's a close game, get to your seat and make some noise with everyone else! The ticket isn't just for the seat: it's for the experience. Enjoy the game with other fans and not just your $7 cup of Bud Light.
