First of all, St. Thomas is very good.  They are very well coached - offensively and defensively.  There is a reason that they were one point away from taking down Marquette with a minute left when they were #5 in the country.  Hats off to them.  They earned their win tonight.   As for us, we didn’t compete.  The coaches failed to make any adjustments, but the players don’t get a pass on this one either.  St. Thomas simply outworked, outhustled, outdefended, and outrebounded us.  If there was a loose ball, they got it.  We didn’t.  That is on the players.  As for the coaching staff, we apparently don’t recognize when we have a serious mismatch. When our 6’4 guards are being taken one on one by a 5’11 defender, why are we not attacking the basket.  St. Thomas is very good at help side, double teaming to prevent penetration.  Unfortunately, our guys stay 5 feet away from the penetrating player so there is no space to move and no place to kick.  Makes it incredibly easy to jump back and not get caught.  Contrast that with our complete inability to figure out what to do with ball screen at the top of the key.  There is a virtual certainty someone will be wide open.  Our bigs are not fast enough to cover, don’t know where to go, and we lack communication.  This has been the story all year long - and we are still doing it.  Our defenders continually turn their backs to the ball and don’t know what is happening with the ball resulting in wide open layups or getting caught in switches.  Our offense got pushed further out on the perimeter by a much smaller team and couldn’t attack the rim because they are constantly in each other’s way.  Eri King was our only competitor tonight with a few glimpses of Tyree.  Other than that, nobody showed up.  I believe we are a better team than we showed tonight, but if that is the effort we give and the lack of any coaching adjustments whatsoever, its going to be a long year.

    Yes to all

  2. Got home late and had to watch game on dvr. Few observations. 1. They have Grant Nelson and we don't. 2. Only hole I see in Nelson's game is he doesn't seem to finish at all with his left hand or want to go left even if given that by the defense, he improves on that and it only adds to his potential on the next level. 3. Matt Norman has become really fun to watch shoot. He is shooting with such confidence and he truly expects every shot to go in. 4. Everytime T takes over 4 dribbles inside a buzzer should go off so he knows to pick the ball up and pass it...nothing good happens when he gets to 5 plus dribbles.  I do like his improvement this year outside the arc tho. 5. Need the women to save some Und pride for us tomorrow.

  3. First off, entertaining day of basketball at the Betty all for $5, nice promotion by Und. Dang, should have had that win. Free throws, yikes. Youth definitely showed with turnovers as well. Need to figure out a rotation in a close game that can both play D and get a bucket if needed. I know Omot is our future but to me he didn't appear willing to carry us offensively down the stretch with a defensive oriented lineup playing. I think we win this game a month from now. Excited to see the season play out. We are going to be the team other teams don't like playing it appears.

    T has been struggling...........

T is specifically who Sather was screaming at in that very first timeout, very early on. Just seemed a bit excessive a few min into game and seems like T hasn't been same since. But for all I know, T could have messed something up they talked about 100x in practice, need to play thru it, can't hang your head at this level. Alright they got their run on us that we knew was coming, time to turn the momentum back

  5. I know Tommy is the most talked about/scrutinized player on our team but that comes with the territory. To me he is a fine FCS quarterback, no better, no worse. The type of guy that will help assure you won't go 2-9 or 3-8 because he won't lose games for you, but you are also very doubtful to go 9-2 or 8-3 with him because he simply isn't the kind of athlete or arm talent that can make those 2-3 extra plays (via ground or air) a game you probably need to beat a top 10 FCS team or lower FBS team. So here we sit. This isn't to say he should be benched or we have a current better option available, I'm comfortable in the coaches decision that he gives us the best shot to win each week. It's more a matter of why don't we ever seem to get that difference maker at QB? I know everyone goes after them so they are hard to come by, but it seems we face several of them each year and it seems we have for as long as I can recall and I go back to about 1990 watching games. We've certainly had our share of competent and even good QB's, but how often have we had a difference maker that other teams have to game plan for??

With that said, I think we made a nice showing in Nebraska as far as not looking out of place, intimidated, or having first game jitters all which is a credit to the staff and players. I haven't seen too much on injuries for the most part coming out of Nebraska which was my biggest concern. So I do expect us to play well on Saturday and come out with a victory and have a chance at a good season. I just need to see more from a playmaking standpoint and I'm afraid we've seen enough tape now to just realize its probably not going to happen in the biggest/toughest spots. I hope I'm wrong and look very forward to a great Potato Bowl game and crowd!

I have no beef with Sather personally seems like a likeable guy and I like how he gets his team to play hard nose defense.  He also seemed to get more out of his players this year then what was expected.  That being said the players he has recruited mostly are not Division 1 players.  This is where I am wondering if he has the ability to recruit the right players.  This coming year will be year 4.  How many years does he get because he is a likeable guy?  Do we wait 10 years and consistently rank at the bottom of the summit because we have a nice guy that works really hard?  He was the head coach of a powerhouse division 2 school that really didnt need much to get players to go there.  We needed to hire a coach in my opinion that knows how to recruit and had division 1 connections.

As far as facility, training rooms, locker rooms etc.  I agree totally that we need to invest more into basketball to get the top recruits.  BUT previous coaches had the same facility and they were able to win championships and compete at the top level of the Big Sky and Summit League.    No body wants to see a coach lose his job and I wouldnt feel good about it either.  I want him to succeed like everyone else, but if he doesn't at some point you have to cut your losses and move on.  I am not a UND alumni and I am  just not happy cheering for the old green and white and watch them lose every year.   They need something that will draw fans to games not just alumni that dont care if we lose or win.  Any other fan cares and the more you win the more fans will come.  Look at the women's team.  They had way more fans at games when they are winning then losing.  Our volleyball coach got fired because he couldnt win.  I guarantee there will be more people at volleyball games next year.

We have 3 scholarships left to give out and in my opinion if we dont see improvement in year 4 it is time to look at someone who can.

Based on other contracts at UND I believe 12 is the correct answer to that question.....

A better solution to me was pretty easy, wait and see how the fall season goes before giving him extension.  I am not a Bubba hater as there is enough of that already, I've defended him on the board a few times.  However the facts are he has 1 playoff win in 8 years, and made one of the dumbest coaching decisions I've ever seen by going for it on 4th down against NDSU last year.  I don't think he earned another contract extension when he still has two years left on his existing contract.  What if we go 5-6 again this year, then we have 3 more years of that?  If we make a playoff run this fall, give him the extension.  This extension was premature in my opinion.  It's my opinion and it's a fan board, I don't have to donate 750k to give my opinion, not referring to you on that one.

For those saying for recruiting purposes, I could be wrong but I find it EXTREMELY unlikely a kid coming out of high school who wanted to come to UND and liked Bubba, would have decided not to come to UND just because Bubba was only under contract through the 2023 season.

    Sums up my thoughts exactly

  8. I think attendance for this weekend is going to be very light. Losing/frustrating product, hunting, fatigue from fanbase spending last weekend in Nashville, home hockey competing for time, noon start/too early for some college kids after hockey night, good weather to get yard stuff done before snow.
