Missouri State vs UND 4/24/21 1st Round Playoff Game

JMU board likes to talk about our offense being mediocre. Granted we didn’t play well last week after the long break in games but if our offense played like they did in the first weeks of the season they can score on anyone.

I would LOVE if JMU would underestimate our offense! Nothing to worry about ..........

I don’t know anything about OL so I’ll give my opinion. I watched him on a few of our first plays and he seemed quick and was able to lock onto a guy and move his feet well enough to keep really good leverage. Didn’t see him leaning and reaching too much. I’m sure some former, or still, big ugly, on this board can give a better analysis.

Tried to focus on him during replays on the big screen (I was at the game). The hardest thing to learn for a young lineman is knowing when to disengage from a double team and engage on a blitzer or a stunt. Many high schools don't teach that, so it can be a learning curve when reaching college football. I saw him successfully disengage multiple times; his brain and his feet were quick enough to do it successfully. I didn't watch him on every play, but from what I saw he looked like a veteran. Much to like about this young man.

Side bar - don't shoot the messenger - according to Hergel's twitter feed he got an offer from Washington State. That's damned impressive.

Do you really think it was for a full ride scholly?  PWO is also an "offer"

I don’t think anyone questioned Hergels talent. He could play for an FBS team but the question is why he would want to leave now? Does he think that would give him a better shot  at making the NFL? NDSU has shown you don’t need to play FBS to be a high draft pick. Going FBS is not a guarantee deal....

I have no idea, but I do know that there is a reason he felt confident to make the decision he did. His choice may end up backfiring or working in his favor, who knows. But he's a damned good OLman.

There are other reasons that he would leave that have nothing to do with what you mentioned. (Edit: not $, don't go there!)

BTW, I am in no way saying that I agree/disagree with his decision.

I thought we'd cleared up that college special teams coaches don't teach kicking technique. If you have a problem with how deep kickoffs go, or FG/XPs, it's a recruiting problem. If there are problems with allowing kick off returns, or getting kicks blocked, that's a special teams coach problem.

UND has returned 4 blocked kicks for TDs in the last 11 games, and have had no kicks blocked. If Kostich keeps that up he'll be off to an FBS job.

Also had a huge fake punt for 1st down vs SDSU this spring.  Was a momentum changer.

The transfer portal is going to present a much different college sports landscape.  There are several guys on the team who likely could play FBS, and play well at that level.

I think I heard or read somewhere that portal players need to be registered to attend in the fall by May 1st to be eligible. Not sure if that is true or not, but it would make the timeline of departure make sense.

He was UND's worst starting OL and it isn't debatable.

That is true, thus the timing for Hergel. The registration is set up with FBS in mind, not FCS schools that are playing in the spring. The NCAAs should have made an exception for FCS teams. It is yet another stupid NCAA rule.

I'd love to see you sit down and debate that with Pawlak. It would be hilarious! We could do a pay per view and raise money for the HPC II!

so you just forget about the previous 7 years or so....JFC some people love mediocrity...still don't have a kicker that i have faith in, kickoffs not thru or to the endzone, muffed punts or punts fair caught inside the 10, missed xtra points.....

Since you still don't understand what a special teams coach does, here's a c/p from a post I made back in February:

I reached out to an acquaintance of mine, who has coached in the MAC, FCS, and D2, and is currently the head coach at at D3 school in Ohio. I asked him if special teams coaches are supposed to be well versed in kicking and punting techniques; his reply: "No. (the position) has much more to do with the mechanics and execution of the units outside of the specialists themselves.

Specialists today are birds of a feather who train and work in their own circles and really work on perfecting there craft in the offseason and really work to maintain consistency during.

Many places like Ohio State will have consultants or advisers that are specialists guys to help coach through but no... the coordinator is going to have everything to do with typically everyone else but those specialists unless it is in regard to what they want them to specifically execute."

Who do you think he is better than on the OL?  Also, you really need better sources.

I think he also got an offer from Utah State. Would be funny to see him end up there next year when we go beat them in Utah.

Ah, this has been standard all season long in hockey and football. It’s the new normal. Seriously, we can all get it on our smartphones.

When I look at your post, was there anything that you enjoyed or appreciated? We're lucky to have a football game at all.  This has been a pandemic shortened and challenged season. Aren't you happy they won?

No printed player roster - could they not have printed a thousand double sided sheets of paper with the player roster. Okay so they want us to go online to get it. Guess what the online roster was not updated for this game - the only one available was from over a month ago.

ummmm....they recruit the best player they can. our kickers and punters the last few years are D2 or D3 at best.  Still love the jail break against Stony Brook...get the kick off we win....wasn't even close.

Something tells me that having a debate with someone who has stated the subject isn't debatable wouldn't be a productive use of my time.

maybe what he was hinting at was ...is/was there ANYTHING that the Alerus/UND could have done to make the average first time fan want to come back...if you sit there yawning as a first time fan ever or in years and this what you get why come back?

I don't know about you, I was entertained watching the game on my big screen in my living room. TBH, I am just happy that they got over the hump and got the win in the first round. I attended one game this season against USD and except for the smaller crowd and the extended press box being on north catwalk, I enjoyed being there.
