Way too much overthinking on this.  As someone else said, caste a new nickel, replacing the Indian head with a Hawk.  Simple, easy, keeps tradition. I know there is not currently a coin like this

Posts like this is is why you are considered one of the essential 5 pillars of the Sioux Football forum by us underlings.  You never disappoint, well done

Hard no on melting down the current nickel, but I wouldn't be opposed to a new one based on the 2004 Lewis&Clark design, commemorating the expedition's winter in ND.

The big thing in the RRV where both schools are located is potatoes and beets. Finding something to encompass the whole state will be tough.

how about the Bonanza Bowl? Or the RoughRider Trophy? Poor Red River grads and their tears......

Let's face it, whatever they pick someone will find offense to it.  Bonanza farms on Native American lands, or Theodore Roosevelt tied to Rough Riders and made disparaging remarks about Native Americans.  Maybe they should just name it "The Trophy" to point out how absurd things have gotten as far as sensitivity goes.

Would it make more sense for it to be the I - 29, since I - 94 doesn't go through Grand Forks?

Oops you can tell I no longer live there.

Didn’t Native Americans steal land from each other for thousands of years? Let’s just say they didn’t fight according to the Geneva Convention...... Also, didn’t they also make slaves out of their captured enemies? Maybe it is a good thing we are not associating our logo anymore with such troubling history......

Isn't the idea of a trophy for the winning team, "exclusionary"?  Based on our new societal sensitivities, maybe we could just have a trophy for each school....;)

This is a must do.

Not only for NDSU, but there should be discussion with getting something going with USD again as well.

Easiest path would just be to create a new Nickle.  I suggested a Sugar bowl idea in the past (although that was in jest).

We should be reaching out to the powers that be at both schools to get this in motion.

I want to keep the Nickle, just because of the history and how much it means to so many people.  For that reason, and It would be controversial, I'd want the Nickel to be melted down and molded into the new trophy (if there is one), so that it retains some of the history as it would actually be the same material.
