If a person presents with symptoms and is negative for the flu and other diseases can they be tested for Covid19?  Can nurses, doctors, EMT's and other personnel who are exposed to Covid19 be tested?  They absolutely cannot in most metropolitan areas and absolutely cannot be tested in the state of Minnesota per the Minnesota Department of Health's statement in the Star tribune today.   That's unacceptable.

Also I call BS on your statement that insulting people who disagree with your opinions is what led to Trump's election.  Insulting his political opponents is all that he does as evidenced by him going after the Democratic Governor's of Michigan, Illinois, and Washington for defying him politically.  If he'd devoted one-tenth of his attention to this epidemic as he does to insulting people on Twitter and at his hate rally's we wouldn't be in this place.

I don’t listen to Trump cuz I can’t stand to listen to him. You seem to think when I expect normal intelligent people to act civilized I am making any supportive/critical  comment about Trump or our other politicians. I’m not because it’s not the time or place.
The issue is how best to deal with this virus. You have zero basis to claim we wouldn’t be in the situation we are in if not for him. It is divisive and counterproductive.
In answer to your question, yes we can be tested. One of my colleagues was tested last week because of possible exposure. One of my patients was tested yesterday and we didn’t ask the state for permission. We are setting up a drive up testing station and will soon be able to do the testing in our small rural hospital here in Minnesota.
I have no idea what people in the metro area are doing, but if we can do these things in rural hospitals in Minnesota then the big city physicians should be able to figure it out.
There is no indication for everyone  to be tested. We follow the guidelines recommended by Infectious Disease specialists and the CDC. I’ve only taken care of over 100,000 patients over the years. I have ER, ICU, Combat experience and I don’t know how the response team acted and reacted. How do you know so much. How many patients do you care for?  Are you on the Trump team with first hand info?
I don’t have all of the answers,  but I’m learning. I will attend a briefing at 7 am to update our local protocols and evaluate what we are doing well and where we need to improve. I am going to log in to a live Mayo Clinic presentation tomorrow afternoon that includes an Infectious Disease update. My sister in law is a recognized world authority on tuberculosis and has a lengthy list of publications on TB but also other Infectious Diseases including Ebola.  She has done contract work for the CDC and speaks to government health departments all over the world on tuberculosis.  I get my info from those sources not the Star Tribune.
With all of that, you seem to know more about all of this than I and other medical people.  We would be happy to pay you to come here and give us a presentation on COVID-19.

If you go full tinfoil hat, there are corners of the internet that believe this is a bio weapon that leaked.  That it and other dangerous bio agents were stolen from a Canadian lab in Winnipeg and brought to a Wuhan lab.

Chinese misinformation campaign meant to cause discord and distrust in the USA and to shift the blame from where it lies, China.

If we take one thing from this it's that China cannot be trusted and we have got to stop doing business with them.  They lied about the outbreak, lied about the numbers, did not contain it, and now are still not forthcoming with information that we could use to stop it here.  We need to cut China off.

Meh, viruses happen.  Why do we need to blame anyone for a natural occurrence?

Current items being studied (that I know of) and/or showed some effectiveness against SARS:

1) ascorbic acid IV

2) hydroxychloroquine 400mg BID x1 day then 200mg BID x4 days

3) Solaris (as if anyone can afford to be trialing that...)

4) Kaletra - poor lit from SARS but I've heard more positive anecdotal evidence for covid

Of course all of these items are immediately backordered, as is propofol (made in italy), cis/roc/succ. etc., fentanyl, ativan IV, all nebs and inhalers, solumedrol.  You know, basically anything you could ever possibly want for an ARDS or vented pt.

I've read reports of a couple others, for which effectiveness could be described currently as "hypothesized":

5) Tocilizumab (Roche doing a study in China).

6) Remdesivir

7) Losartan

Also Favipiravir/Avigan per this article https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/18/japanese-flu-drug-clearly-effective-in-treating-coronavirus-says-china

If only China, like Russia before them could figure out a way to create mistrust and spread dissension among Americans. If only there was a willing channel for them to disseminate this misinformation to the masses.

Yes, viruses happen.  It's everything else in my post that is the issue.  The lying, coverup, lack of information, lack of sharing information.

Latest by the authoritative science journal New Scientist, for all you left-brained geeks: COVID-19 (Coronavirus) kills 0.7-1% of those infected. 99% fully recover. 7000 people had died, most of them above age 50 and with pre-existing conditions (such as heart disease, obesity, smoking-related complications, or diabetes). The flu decimated 30,000 people in the US alone during the same period. The measures adopted by governments, communities, and individuals the world over are far more dangerous and detrimental than this or any other virus can ever be.

This mass delusion, psychosis, hysteria, or panic is a first. The only comparable reaction to a pandemic happened in the 14th century with the bubonic plague (Black Death). The Spanish flu killed 50-100,000,000 worldwide. AIDS infected 45,000,000 and millions perished. Swine flu infected 61 million in the USA alone - and killed 600,000 globally. SARS (2002-4) had a case fatality rate 10 times higher than COVID-19. There was no hint of panic or hysterical self-isolation. So, what gives? Why now?

Because people have short memories (lack perspective) and believe everything the tv tells them. This unparalleled fear-mongering has even struck the hospital where my wife works: staff are prohibited from entering through the front door, and now must enter via the rear through a tunnel; and have their temperatures read at a checkpoint before working. If they're running a little high, tough luck, no work for you; you have to go home.

I will always contend that this is whole thing is as suspicious as it gets, my intuition screams that something is amiss; most likely a red herring to divert everyone's attention. From what, I'm not sure yet. And it amazes me that people here & elsewhere soak it up so willingly. The authority-worshipping, cognitive dissonance & willful ignorance I read from most people here is beyond epic. Suffice to say that most of you here should be ashamed of yourselves for buying into this utter nonsense & paranoia, & then peddling it onto others. No critical thought or courage whatsoever to challenge the edicts of the state, just blind acceptance. But thankfully, it sounds like a few are starting to rouse from their slumber.

The people here & in society deserve the chains that will be put around the necks of their posterity, if not their own, for turning their backs on the Truth & common sense. Because the injustices we face today, will be much worse for our children.

Maybe, like many other world leaders, they simply didn't comprehend the severity of the virus and weren't ready to destroy their economy?

Don't make excuses for the ChiComs.  They are not our friends.  Hopefully this incident wakes us up to that realization and we move our supply and manufacturing to other areas of the world, and the most critical functions like medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, or anything that effects our national security we bring back home.  We'd never depend on another country for our food supply, why do we depend on other countries for medical supplies?

My personal opinion is the more we look into this, the more we're going to realize this virus is all over the u.s..  I was talking to one of our doctors at an open skate a couple days ago. She was saying that all winter they were getting cases where people were showing flu symptoms but would test negative. The illness hung on for weeks in comparison. I, myself, was sick early November with what I thought was the flu. Showed as flu and after a couple days was starting to get better and around the 5 day mark, I got absolutely crushed again. The weird thing was, the difficulty I had breathing. At the time, I was very fit, two rounds of a P90x style program, and this illness crushed me to the point I'm still coughing. I was explaining all of this to the doctor and my case describe as a lot of those cases not testing positive for flu. I may, or may not have had this virus, but I've never been hit by a sickness like this in my life, and let's face it, the Chinese lie. This virus was around long before it was reported, and it was out of control in China long before they announced it was. Don't forget they didn't say anything until healthcare workers were leaking information. Bottom line, it's out here, it's been here for a while to the point I would bet many have had it and gotten over it, and everyone needs to calm the f down.

I think you're probably spot on.

I almost never get sick, but did so after being in Santa Clara when this first started hitting the news.  Not strep, not the flu. "Some kind of virus".  Cough that wouldn't go away and shortness of breath when doing very minimal tasks, and I'm in great shape.

I started to think about how many friends over the winter have told me that they were "sicker than they have ever been" and then were back to normal after 2 weeks.

I agree, but it seems a lot of these originate in China.  Coincidence?   Maybe, but you have to question some of their street market practices and cleanliness.

This maybe explains my illness a few weeks back.  My 3 old runs a fever of 103 one evening so we take him to urgent care.  They say he tests positive for influenza A but by the next day he is 100% recovered (isn't that stuff supposed ot hang around for about 5 days?) and I am staying home from work with him that day in expectation that he has the flu.  I proceed to get sick, but it was like nothing I had experienced before.  Nothing respiratory but I felt severely "off".  Every time I took his temp that day (which was about every hour) I would take my temp.  His temp had returned to normal, mine was a severely low temp, like registering 93.5 degrees temp at times and ranged from 93.5 to 96 for a couple of days (which I looked up and 93.5 body temp is on the verge of hypothermia), then back to normal.  I was like, huh, that was weird, my entire body was cold to the touch yet I didn't feel cold, chills, no body aches, and I was totally functional.  It was really strange.

That’s where the panic and misinformation posted online originates.  I just read an article posted today that again mentioned ‘Trump called the coronavirus a hoax.’   18 days after they deliberately misquoted him, they’re still pushing that lie, still pushing that narrative to lead people to think we’re all gonna die, all for the sake of maybe gaining a few votes.  Pathetic.

Trump compared the coronavirus to a hoax. Is that better than saying he called it a hoax? And by the way, the things he compared it to weren't hoaxes either. They were investigations into his sketchy behavior. The executive branch doesn't get to call any check on their power a hoax - unless everyone is fine with moving closer to a dictatorship. Apparently some of you are - except the tweaker conspiracy theory folks. Definitely my favorite on this site - if I knew how easy it was to find internet wackos, I'd have engaged long ago. Hope you loaded up on tin foil!

I still cannot seem to get past the fact this went down in the biggest election year we've ever had, with an embattled incumbent who cherishes the economy.  Ah, probably a coinkydink

Next you're going to tell us you don't vaccinate your kids because it causes autism.
