You think the President should shut down airports.

What about Subways? Malls? Marathons? Parades? Churches? Concerts? Casinos? The entire strip in Vegas?

If the media is going to show any picture of groups of people gathering and claiming "outlandish".

We are in for a long Coronavirus season.

Shut down airports?  No.  Should Trump have had the foresight and common sense to properly staff airports before implementing the travel ban?  Absolutely.  This is just the latest of this admin's hastily ordered and thoughtlessly organized policies as it pertains to Covid-19.

Mind you, this occurred at customs,  These people, returning from all over the world, were jammed together for hours with no coronavirus protocols in place - then they all entered the country.  Holy crapballs.

As for shutting down subways and malls?  Depends on how severe cases are by region I suppose, and it should left to states/localities to decide.  China for instance had hot zones, other areas were relatively covid free.  That said, for several reasons, we have so little information as to the severity and spread of covid-19 in the US.

Same thing happened at O'Hare

I’ve been hearing for about 3 years now that not allowing anyone into our country for any reason is extremely racist.  So it’s clearly a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.

We are in for a long Coronavirus season.

So when we all are another 8-12 weeks into this and your local Walmart and/or Target and/or grocery store are the only stores open how many people in CHI or DAL or any community are going to standing in line and or in the store? And I'm sure it's going to be orderly and peaceful at those places.

The single mom, who has been out of work for weeks and has a few bucks left in her pocket with 3 kids at her side who are hungry and riddled fear and anxiety, is going look at the person in line behind who of course is at least 6 ft away and say...."My kids and I scared, we are desperate, we have lost almost everything, we have basically nothing left but at least we didn't get the virus."

So in the next week in this country when everything shuts down except for the facilities that care for the sick we need to ask ourselves who are we protecting again by all of this? 99.5+% of people who get this virus are going to go on to lead healthy lives but will they happy lives? Lives with hope and a future?

This is NOT a single entity issue.

Sorry the President can't do everything for evergone.

That looks like some high school cafeterias.

Won't look like a cafeteria in MN in the near future. Gov. Walz to hold presser at 10 am. No doubt it's a domino effect because of neighboring WI and SD.

I just found out tonight that one of my staff members is positive.  She had a fever and body aches for 5 days before respiratory symptoms showed up.  It's possible she was already infected with something else and then got covid in addition, but it's impossible to know.  I don't think we can say yet that fever isn't the marker.  Today is day 8 with symptoms (only day 3 of respiratory symptoms), and her fever still hasn't dropped below 100.

I live in Westchester County (actually just moved out of New Rochelle 4 months ago) and work in both Westchester County and Rockland County.  We aren't overwhelmed YET.  That being said, this one positive staff member is taking out 5 other people for 6 days because they worked with her on the day she developed systems.  DOH's current guideline is to quarantine anyone who had extended close contact with the person on or after the day he/she develops symptoms.  Anyone else who had brief contact can continue to work but should closely monitor for symptom development.  I have a relatively small dept (45-50 people) that was short 6 FTEs to begin with.  Now we're taking out another 6 people?  Staffing resources are about to get really tight, really quick.

New York-Presbyterian, ranked #5 in the list of nation's best hospitals, just announced today that effective Monday all elective procedures and surgeries will be postponed.  It's common opinion around here that most hospitals will follow suit fairly soon.

Ira’s words were taken out of context. He had previously stated that people with fever and cough should stay home. I thought he meant that people who had colds but no fever could freely spread their  germs. He was in fact saying that people who simply have cough and fever need to not clog up medical offices and ER’s.

People without fever are almost certainly capable of spreading coronavirus.

Edited to add: hopes for speedy recoveries for your staff.

If we weren't testing for it previously, but started now, wouldn't the number of people that had it obviously go up?

MN.......tested 868 confirmed 21

ND........tested 87 confirmed 1

WI........tested 273 confirmed 27

I fully expect the numbers to skyrocket. Based on the fact we started at 0 just a short time ago.  I don't doubt that it's spread wide and far.

First confirmed case in US was January 21.

2 months.  Right.

makes me wonder how many other NBA players actually had it but just sat out with flu-like symptoms.

We'll be at this for awhile if 1M are going to die.

I thought Ira was saying people don't have to worry if they have a fever but no respiratory symptoms.  I think we're all just learning as we go here.

A small observation that may be coincidental, but I've seen for multiple patients that the virus took a turn for the worse on day 5/6 of being infected.  People going from treatment at home to admitted, people going from med surg to ICU, people going from ICU to intubated.  It's not 100% of patients, but quite a few of them decline right at that 5/6 day mark.  Just something to keep an eye on.

What are the ages of those patients? Underlying complicating heath factors?

Bump

I would like someone to address this. This IMO is the elephant in the room. What happens to these people? Their families? We seem to be strictly focused of keeping grandma's with CHF or emphysema or diabetes with secondary renal failure alive in this thread.

Where are we as a functioning society if this social distancing lockdown is still effect as we approach Memorial Day? People are still going to get infected. Some will die. Who picks up the pieces of lives shattered and destroyed by the inability to make a living. People and kids with futures ahead of them.....not just another birthday or two.

Or we can tough it out 3 weeks and let science gather information.

Deciding the socioeconomic future of a population should not be based on cognitive bias. Not when there’s no backsies.

That 82 year old victim in New York...hard to blame coronavirus when she suffered from advanced emphysema, but it feeds into the panic, so roll with the story!

Obesity.  This country is brimming with ridiculously fat unhealthy people of all ages.  It's something Europe/Asia didn't necessarily need to concern themselves with in their outbreaks.

We have a completely new set of potential risk factors, which is part of the problem.

Yep...  2 weeks beginning this Wednesday or Thursday; unclear which day.  Next week was our spring break anyway, plus the Mrs. had our kid out a few extra days anyway.  Main concern appears to be distant learning, special ed, school meals, and day care.
