Students Spearhead Effort for Fighting Hawks Mascot

The nickname process ran amuck when they had a large committee and the process was so open and there were all these votes and run-off votes.  Way, way too many choices.  Way, way too many voting periods.  The process was completely F'ed up.  It was inevitable that a generic Hawks was chosen.  The pizza example is a great one, you guys ended up with a frozen Jack's pepperoni pizza.  Now that you've all seen what arguing over this gets you people may be more open and there may be a more cooperative effort in a new nickname process.

The first area it went wrong is the committee violated their first rule, that the new name and logo be unique and identifiable with North Dakota.  Fighting Hawks should have never been on the list to begin with along with about half the other names they came up with.

Start the process over.  Small committee comes up with 3 nicknames.  The nicknames must be uniquely North Dakotan, nothing generic.  Put it to a general vote.

Coyotes, Jackrabbits, Bison...all uniquely Dakotan.  Hawks just doesn't fit with that.

Absolutely not to all three of these questions. 1) That logo is as equally as bad/generic. 2) Why would another version of a generic Hawk get rid of the idea of Sioux Forever? "Sioux Forever" is not about the logo being bad, it's about having the Sioux logo taken away. Had the new logo and/or name been better, the transition may have been easier and not taken as long, but "Sioux Forever" would have still been there. 3) No Sioux Forever fans want the logo anywhere, regardless of the sport. No need to clump it all on hockey. See point 2 for the answer why.

All in all, what's your point?

My point is what you said.  No matter what nickname and logo were selected, it was always destined to have opposition to it no matter what it was.For many, the Fighting Hawks name and logo is the visual representation of the fact the Fighting Sioux nickname is gone and never coming back.  It represents all that went wrong in trying to obtain the Sioux name and the shortfalls UND had in gaining approval not just in the 3 year time as outlined by the settlement, but decades before.  It reminds them every day the flawed process of trying to select a unique name with significance to the school and state and then coming up with a generic name.  The reason why there are many that have yet to accept the name is they are relating all that history of the nickname dispute and focusing all that anger, frustration, anger, etc to the Fighting Hawks name and logo.  People need to separate one from the other.

Those three nicknames suck worse than Hawks.  Flea infested non-descript animals.

Sorry, but you are wrong.  All three are identifiable nationally.  There is no mistaking Coyotes, Jackrabbits, or Bison for some other school.  They are instantly identifiable as being Dakotan.  Hawks is just another hawk name like the 100's of other schools with hawk variations.  UND is better than to be lumped in that crowd.

You just spent the previous four sentences relating well to a problem that seems very passionate and difficult. In the last sentence, you make it sound so easy to just "get over." Wouldn't all of that passion and difficultly take time to move on from?

Some have gotten there quickly. Others have not. Just accept that and we'll all be better off.

The reciprocal is the same for the "Sioux Forever" crowd.

I got it, makes sense.  What would the options be for UND?

That's for you guys to determine, you are NoDaks, after all.  What is something that is culturally identifiable with your state, an animal, a plant, an occupation, a place, a historical figure, whatever, that would make for a good nickname?  NoDak has some history to it, use it.

George H Bush has moved on more quickly from the passing of his wife Barbara who he had been married to for 73 years.  And that was a week ago!!

It’s okay if you see a person wearing a Fighting Hawk cap or shirt. They cheer for the same school. And what’s funny is your reply to my comment in which you “fixed” can go for the Fighting Sioux Forever crowd as well. There are people who have moved on. Pretty fun sight seeing 10,000 Fighting Hawks fans waving their Hawkerchief during the Potato Bowl, but I’m sure after the game they ran home to hug their Fighting Sioux pillow apologizing to Ralph Engelstad for touching anything with the Hawk on it.

I'm stunned that this hasn't caused SJW controversy because you can't spell "Hawkerchief" without the word "chief" in it, since, as we all know, carries with it, potential Native American thought and imagery.

Just think if they would have put a bird randomly wearing a headdress on it!

And? What's it to you how fast or slow someone moves on from something?

I agree and the same argument could be made the other way

What’s it to others how some alumni choose to work with the foundation and spend their money/donations?   Someone wanted to give $35,000 for a mascot costume and it’s suddenly a conspiracy  to accelerate the change

My point is that it has been almost 6 years since the statewide vote to retire the Fighting Sioux name.  The #siouxforever crowd wants to be coddled to and be treated with extra caution as to not offend them because they are not yet done with the grieving process.  I think its pathetic.  My comparison is that people get over deaths in the family quicker than people are getting over the loss of the Sioux name.  It literally is a nickname of a college.  That's it.  There are much more important things to be pissed off at the world about.

Coyotes, yes. Jackrabbits yes, Bison?? There are many Bison nicknames out there. Three DI teams are called Bison or Bisons, Howard, Bucknell, Lipscomb and more locally U of Manitoba. Ask someone in our nations capital which Bison they identify with the Dakotan Bison or the one that plays there. Yes Hawk is another “generic” nickname but with over 300+ DI schools you run into duplicates. The NCC saw two Mavericks and neither Omaha or Mankato saw a need to change. In hockey Michigan Tech and St Cloud State has Huskies and neither changed because of it. The nickname process was a mess but that like the Sioux name its in the past. We are the Fighting Hawks since 2015, and it will be that way going forward. There is no killing the name and starting over as no name will be good enough unless it’s the Fighting Sioux to people, you could have 100 name processes and 100 of them would pick a name that isn’t good enough to satisfy the Fighting Sioux forever crowd.
