He had plenty of offers.  Just not from Iowa.

It's very possible - maybe even likely - that he had an offer from Iowa. It's also likely that it wasn't a committable offer.

In recent years the SEC has begun to give offers that are non committable. It's become their way of showing the recruit "we are interested in you." A small percentage of offers are "you can commit to us at any time," but most are just to show interest. Urban Meyer and James Franklin have brought this practice to the Big Ten. It's a weird way to do business but it's the way of the world today.

He had an offer and committed before "decommitting" 6 months later. No clue on why or any details, but he's at UND now.

Rumor has it .. Iowa didn't care for some of his pro - trump tweets he sent out.  If that is the case, Iowa might have simply been looking for a reason to back away from the offer.  With his support of Trump, I like him even more !!!

Leave the politics out of this, please. That never ends well around here.

Let's hope the kid can help us out.

New recruit Trae Steckler. In state and looks like he says no to SU.

6'3" 210# TE out of Mandan. D2 offers plus ndsu pwo offer. Seems ndsu thought he was committed to them at one point, as they have his profile on their roster.

Don't think the kid wanted to go to SU in the first place.  He tweeted nothing about it on signing day.  My assumption is he was pressured a bit too early, before he was ready, because of signing day hoopla, etc.

Since UND gave him money he can sign with us.  PWOs are free to re-sign anywhere for scholarship money.  Seems like a Joe Schobert scenario.

Well worth the money.  Kid is gonna be a solid player for the Hawks!

I don’t necessarily think it was that he did or didn’t want to sign at NDSU. I think it was deciding whether he wants to play football or basketball at the next level.

What changed in a week?  He chose the same sport both times.

Has nothing to do with interest. Ndsu offered him as a PWO. No money involved which means he wouldnt have signed an NLI with NDSU. NDSU introduced him anyways as they always do with signing days, but this being early means they will probably not do this in future. UND had to of offered him a scholarship of sorts during those days that NDSU didnt know because he would to had to of signed by the 22nd, which was before NDSU introduced their commits. Steckler just changed his mind and went to UND which is his right. If he didnt sign on the 22nd he cant sign anything till february but it says he did.

Im just not sure why thus is coming out till now.

NDSU can't introduce him unless he signs and submits paperwork otherwise that is a violation of NCAA rules by the school. He was introduced by NDSU on the 20th. The signing period ended the 22nd, which is after NDSU announced him, not before.

There is no paperwork to sign if there is no scholarship money being offered. Walk on do not sign nli's, or any paperwork for that matter. They are just another student who isn't binded to a program until they practice for the first time.

You can’t announce a recruit that doesn’t sign a LOI?

Um, question.

I thought a coach can't talk about a recruit until that recruit signs an NLI.

Additionally, I was under the belief that (other than signing day information released) a recruit was not supposed to appear on a team roster or other team lists until that recruit had matriculated*.

If no NLI had been signed, how could a school talk about or introduce a PWO recruit?

*Quit giggling

Walk-ons don't sign NLI however there is other paperwork they can submit to the school that allows them to be announced with the rest of the signing class, which is how coaches can talk about them. If they don't have the paperwork in, they can't be mentioned, which would be a recruiting violation, however it is not binding like a NLI is. This is why you don't always see every name you expect to, at least initially.

This is 100% what I believe to be correct as well.

You could be right, and if this is correct, why didn't UND introduce them at their release? He couldn't have "signed" after the 22nd. Or maybe he didn't, and just verballed to them and isn't locked in yet, and the articles on the story are wrong?

UND did identify several PWOs on signing day.
