A total of $12.6 million must be cut from the 2015-17 budgets at UND

A summary of proposed budget reductions from each college and division will be posted to the UND president's web page April 18. In Schafer's memo, he said the deadline to finalize the reshaped budget is now on or close to April 26 instead of April 15.

Did UND currently have $6,000,000 in waste per year or will the University have to educate less students by cutting certain programs?

It isn't either or. There is probably some waste, there is in pretty much every organization. But you can also create savings and reduce expenses in a lot of ways without cutting entire programs. As they state in the article, the goal is to minimize the negative effects on students. Cutting programs would be a negative effect on students.

One man's waste is another man's 'opportunity for savings.'  They may have to switch from imitation crab meat to imitation imitation crab meat, and so forth.

I see we are eliminating baseball and men's golf.   I know money is tight but I sure hate to cut sports.   What's next on the chopping block?   I feel this leaves UND with a bad image and we should find other ways to tighten the belt.

If one were to read the Herald they'd think, "oh low oil (and commidity) in North Dakota, no more UND baseball....wonder how they survived before all that oil money? They've been playing baseball at UND since 1956! Times must be tough up there right now."

Quote

The cuts in the athletic department resulted because UND needs to trim approximately $12.6 million from its budget as state revenue forecasts are lower than expected due to falling oil and commodity prices.

Stuff like this going around Facebook:

We've been bragging about our billion dollar surpluses and putting away tons of money, yet someone screwed up on the plan for the future so badly that with one year of budget cuts we lose the baseball team? I'm not a fan of the academic cuts either. Just startling that so much faith was put into a volatile market we managed to lose something that's been around for over a century.

Ugh. What a cluster.

Doctors are notoriously bad with money. Apparently nobody at UND ever told Kelley "no".

All of the current cuts are coming from the budget problems facing the state, not from anything done by anyone at UND. That is part of what happens when you institute a flat 4.05% budget cut across all state budgets rather than opening up the budget process again and reviewing all budgets to see where the most appropriate cuts should be made.

Typically a hiring freeze, prohibition of out of state travel, and other simple reductions would satisfy the 4.05% cuts. They had to use those to meet the $5 million hole Kelley left the school in. Thus, deeper cuts are now needed to meet the 4.05% cuts.

Bad timing (and misfortunes) of it all....overspending. Then budget cuts. And need to find money for the new "Full cost of Attendance."

Here's a recent picture taken inside the capital in Bismarck:

So, the sale of NC merch should save some jobs, right?  Or at least cover the incentive payout in Brad Berry's contract.

His base is $280,000. Grows to $406,000 if all incentives are met. I'm sure he got close to it. Probably only missed the Frozen Faceoff wins incentives, which would be minor compared to the National Championship.

Those type of things would satisfy a 1 year cut. The governor ordered the departments to come up with permanent budget cuts rather than 1 time fixes. That's why they cut sports and are talking other programming cuts rather than finding more short term fixes.

No he didn't, though he did suggest departments to consider future budgets when making the cuts. The $5 million hole Kelley left the school in was not a "one-time" problem either. It was ongoing due to an assumed exorbitant tuition increase and not making any changes when it was blocked.

Hopefully president Kennedy and governor Stenehjem are better advocates for UND than Kelley and Dalrymple were. The universities funding formula will likely see some negative changes next year, and it already wasn't very rewarding to UND compared to other schools.

Cutting baseball and golf could be deemed a 1 year fix.  Reason being Faison knew the budget shortfall will be much worse next year and that cut is not nearly enough.

Cutting one sport that returns zero revenue from their 2+ million dollar budget would have solved their problems.  Reallocate scholarships  to US students with reciprocity and add roster spots to those teams.  Done.

But he got out voted again.

Please explain how we're getting mistreated by the funding formula.  Not being argumentive but I just want to hear what I'm missing.  We did get a new Med school'
