St. Cloud State drops some eggs ... er, sports

Recommended Posts

Brick and mortar retail felt the disruptive change of online technology first.

Yes some of this is changing demographics ( fewer HS graduates) but some of declining enrollment at schools like SCSU is online education and the disruptive change it brings.

Fewer on campus students means smaller fees budgets to support extracurricular activities.

Schools are having to adapt and adjust offerings accordingly.

When will the NCAA have to start to make divisional or sport requirements adjustments in light of the changing landscape.

St Cloud St doesn’t have many degrees that are worth the money paid.  Parents now mostly insist on getting a valuable BS degree that makes money.  UND and NDSU have them and even Duluth to an extent.  Mankato has added some STEM type programs but most of the Minnesota States haven’t.  Moorhead St used be greater than NDSU’s enrollment in the 1980’s and 1999’s and now NDSU is much bigger.

Almost the whole Minnesota State system needs to change beyond the social justice arts, but UND benefits by their incompetence.

That's not exactly true. A whole lot of fluff at SCSU but they have some degree programs that consistently provide value to students. That's why they have sent walking papers to library professors, philosophy professors, and the like.

Not unlike how my other alma mater, UND SoL, cut a bunch of their fat in recent years and wisely so.

Made an exaggeration that is partly true.  Minnesota State students seem to get by with little science and math and the important liberal arts classes come across as "progressive" arts.  Value any major if they truly "learned" and are capable of honestly reflecting on it, but that is rare.

It was checking past attendance at SCSU football games and they appear to hover around 2,500 (without doing actual math). Compare that to nearby St. Johns which averaged 5,000 fans last year, not including the game at Allianz Field.

Just over 190,000 people are in the St. Cloud Metro area plus thousands of alums in the Twin Cities, so pretty obvious Husky football was not a major attraction.

Have to ‘set the stage’ like UND did with baseball. Seems to me that there are more men’s athletic opportunities being cut now in anticipation of cutting a women’s sport down the road (possibly sooner than later)

even if their leaving in 5 years for greener pastures?

Even if they want to do that, it would be a pretty heavy lift.  They need some major facilities upgrades in order to be competitive in Division 1 sports.  I have no doubt that they have the ability, money, support and desire to complete those projects, but those kinds of things don't just happen overnight.  Let's not crown them Summit League champions just yet.  In the meantime, having all our teams play in MSP will enhance our recruiting efforts there.  Much better than SC.

IMO they would be an attractive school for the MVC or Big East after a period of athletic success.  Probably at least 10 years down the line.  Hell, that's longer than some programs stay in a conference.  Think of it like hiring coaches at a mid-major.  Do you want the mediocre coach that will stay forever, or the coach that will raise the profile of the program, and possibly move on?  JMO

When UST is finally fully DI, they will meet the MVC standards for private schools.  They already exceed Drake and Evansville, and are in a huge metro, which the MVC wants for TV contract negotiations.   The private vs public requirements are so very different.  The public ones are very difficult and the private ones are if one as a pulse you get in.

Getting UST beyond the MVC like Creighton did is very difficult.  If UST starts lacrosse, they could get in the Big East just for that sport.

Some of what you are saying makes sense, but I'm sorry, St. Thomas does NOT exceed any current Valley schools in athletic facilities.  Here's their massive 2,000-seat gym for basketball, nestled inside a student rec center...

As soon as they get a waiver, they will build on campus arena for b-ball and hockey.  That is a near quotation from a D3 board.

Rumor is there will build it on the fb field and use Allianz Field instead.

Can schedule in a pro arena like the Big East does, either Target or XCel.

OK, but that's not what you said.  You said they have facilities that are better than two Valley schools right now.  That's false.  I'm sure there are ways to deal with the fact that they are essentially landlocked, and need space for new facilities, but those solutions will not be quick, cheap or easy.  Booting the football team to an over-sized off-campus soccer stadium would be demoralizing to that program, IMHO.  Rumors and message board chatter aren't a great source of factual info, anyway.

I'm on-board with UST to the Summit, but let's not crown them the new Creighton before they tip off a single D-1 game.  Crazy talk.
