College Hockey Expansion

Wouldn't it be ironic if D1 hockey took off in the SEC before it ever does in the PAC?  With ASU going D1 we hear about other PAC schools kicking the tires, and hockey has really grown out West, but the PAC schools are hurting for money because of bad TV deals.  The SEC is flush with cash and there are some ACHA club programs in the SEC with good followings.  I could legitimately see some SEC schools starting D1 programs.

You can only build so many football and baseball facilities.  At some point you have to spend that money in order to keep your tax exempt status.

I still think the Big Ten needs to really put some pressure on Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana to start D1 programs.  All schools have facilities in place, under construction, or have plans for facilities in various stages.

Well the SEC Network is making more $ each year while the PAC12 network is floundering.  The SEC and BIG can afford hockey so much more easily than other conferences.  Wouldn't be surprised if UGA adds men's hockey and women's lax.

That's what happens when your commissioner is incompetent....

Today, San Jose City Council approved a 200,000 square-foot expansion of

at San Jose, which will add two recreational ice sheets to the facility, including a 4,200-seat, two-story arena which will serve as the new home for the #SJBarracuda

San Jose State plays there.

That depends...did you mean to type UND and typed UNO by mistake?;)

Nope meant UNO.  It is 50 miles from Lincoln and part of the NE university system.

Speaking of hockey down south, is there any possibility of UND / NCHC hosting a Frozen Four in Nashville?

Hmmmm.

Why would they? Nashville is pretty far away from all of the NCHC school.

Didn't they try to host one at MSG.

didn't Wisconson host in Tampa in 16?  I don't think geography is a significant consideration for hosting a frozen four?

Miami RedHawks are fairly close. UAH Chargers a couple hours closer.

Maine is closer to Anaheim, and Alaska Anchorage was the host there. That was a darn good Maine team that won also.

The Vegas Knights bought an AHL team that will play in Orleans Arena.   Wonder what the diminishing chances are of a UNLV startup.

A lot more and cheaper tickets now too.

Most likely doesn't, UNLV needs other people willing to help donate to start the program and Bill Foley is willing to donate. This just give UNLV another arena to play in.

This article says the Knights are building another arena for the AHL team and that would open up again the Orleans.  Also, Vegas will bid on the 2025 World Juniors.

It suppose to be the arena in downtown Henderson NV that's being built.

Looks like the America East schools (VT, UNH,, Me, and UM-Lowell) want to breakaway from Hockey East and form their own confernce.  They can add HE member Merrimack and one of Sacred Neart and Holy Cross to make six.

Where in that article do you read into the idea of a breakaway conference involving Vermont, UNH, Maine, and UMass-Lowell?

This editorial says Hockey East should follow the lead of the strongest hockey conference, the NCHC, rather than going to a multi sport conference.

BU and Northeastern used to be members of America East too, so any changes could have been easily accomplished ten years ago.

Iowa not using the new rink near campus is a pretty clear indicator they aren't going to add hockey.

Iowa volleyball is using the new arena.

No idea how a small club hockey team could afford to pay the rent on a building like Iowa Arena.

I don't see how what a club hockey program does has any bearing on a varsity hockey program.  If a school decides to go D1 they go D1, doesn't matter what the club situation is.

...Did you watch Penn State and ASU transition? They were at the top of club hockey and made the jump smoothly.

Moving the team 30 miles north rather than investing in the potential D1 arena across the street is a sign there is no support from the parent institute, and a step backwards.
