Just when you thought GF area had a nice "homegrown" industry. Burgum and Fargo once again say "Not so fast Grand Forks!"

Burgum doesn’t care about GF. He only cares about downtown Fargo and all the tax breaks he can rack up from the mayor.

I think the EAS contract in Devils Lake is why Grand Forks to Denver flights have failed a couple of times.

GFK DEN failed because the Northern Red River Valley has a disproportionately large number of high value Delta (NWA) frequent fliers. They where not switching to United when they paid a little more on dl but get free bags free upgrades and free ticket changes. When the only time the Denver flight was full was when a big sky team flew in the. When united just randomly started canceling flights for aircraft to be used other routes the writing was on the wall.

If time mattered, no amount of loyalty would trump the convenience of a DEN hub for persons traveling south and west.  Flying to MSP 100% of the time only to turn right back around to reach destinations in the SW US is utterly ridiculous.  I, for one, LOVED the convenience of UA out of GFK.  Shortened travel times considerably.

Doesn't explain why DL hasn't included a SLC connection or two out of GFK to serve those same high-value customers, but I digress.

That's the reasonable question: Even one SLC run a day from GFK would be useful.

Anyone with knowledge of the airline business understand why a company like allegiant doesn't do this, when they already have direct flights from grand forks to Orlando, Vegas, and Phoenix?  I feel like Denver would serve more people than all of those three combined.

I'm not real knowledgeable of the airline business, but one issue is Allegiant typically uses cheaper, smaller airports, other than its base in Vegas.  Hence flights into Mesa and Sanford rather than Phoenix and Orlando.  Not sure the demand would be there if the flights go into Boulder instead of Denver and then have to bus to Denver International.

On top of that, if you have to pay $220 plus fees round trip to Denver and then another $220 plus fees round trip from Denver to Portland, is it still a good deal?

Allegiant flies to Denver from cities like Cincinnati and Ashville NC.  It's not meant to be a connector flight, with all its complications.  Allegiant doesn't intend to be a connector as they leave that to Frontier etc.

Allegiant is building a massive beach resort in Port Charlotte, Fl north of Ft Myers.  Their flights into Punta Gorda will see a major rise as Punta Gorda has limited flights now.  It's an attempt to sell hotel tickets too and keep the money, not just airline tickets, which are just a small part of a vacation cost.  Hotels and rental listed on their sites often return major referral fees.  Allegiant is more a vacation company than an airline.

Allegiant had connector flights from Las Vegas to Hawaii.  But they since withdrew from Hawaii as the connections were such a logistical pain.  Allegiant is committed to no stop flights to vacation destinations as that is where and how they have been profitable.

They have expanded to Tucson, Austin, New Orleans, Destin/Fort Walton Beach, Myrtle Beach, Newark as destinations and their business keeps growing.

that's what we wanted but the Airport authority wanted another carrier.  But the SLC run failed in BIS failed in MOT and was ok at best in FAR in fact even the FAR ATL flight failed.

Barely, indeed.

There may be all kinds of "industry insider" logic at play here, but the bottom line from the consumer's perspective is that Delta could do better and give at least a second hub option in markets where the NWA/DL monopoly persists.

Fargo has options, GFK does not.

The point is that Delta doesn't have enough aircraft to add to GFK that may or may not make money.  If they are going to add it would be east coast. PHL to BOS and CLT and BOS.  SLC is not that big of a hub.  Its ATL MSP DTW LAX SLC.

It’s not that simple.  Delta doesn’t interchange big jets with small regional ones.  Smaller contract airlines, like Skywest, are a big part of those decisions and they have a major pilot shortage.  Right now Bismarck and Williston don’t have SLC service while Rapid City and Billings do.

That is true but it may change from what I hear

Burgum seems to love drones and developing the unmanned industry and wants to spend a lot of money to help. $3 Million would go to Grand Sky.

https://grandforksherald.com/business/technology/4536717-burgum-proposes-30-million-statewide-uas-tracking-network

As Moser would say, is this a way to give a bunch of state money to Fargo to help jump start their UAV industry?

Right on, miss Moser. Added a little dimension to this shop.
