Conference Realignments - Take 2

Recommended Posts

UST isn't getting invited anywhere unless they win in the conference.  They have to not only move up but also succeed.  Do you see any of the Dakota schools just handing the conference over to them?  I don't.  We didn't hand it over to Denver and we won't hand it over to UST.  Welcome addition but they have to prove it.

Totally disagree.

Any of the Dakotas could win, but they aren't going anywhere.  Loyola of Chi hadn't won a dance game for fifty years but they promised to upgrade that program and the MVC lucked out with a Final Four.  It's all about TV market.

PFW hasn't even gotten to the Dance ever but it has been upgraded.  UST would be upgraded too with several times the TV market.  The MVC so values private schools over public its preferential treatment with lower standards for privates.  Ill-Chi and Milwaukee were probably better choices for the MVC over Loyola but they didn't even get a look.

UST is a great "get" for the Summit. Its presence in the MSP market offers great potential for the league, and for any mid-major league, to increase its exposure in a major media market. However, mere physical presence in that market isn't enough. To fulfill that promise UST must fund its programs, hire  (and pay) coaches at a DI level, build new facilities, and, yes, win games in order to capture the interest and the $$$ of the Twin CIties market.

Yes, the MSP market is a big media market, but with that comes intense competition for the sports dollar. We're talking about a school that has so far  been content to compete at the DIII level. It has a long way to go before it captures a significant share of the MSP market. Let's not pencil them in as a DI sports juggernaut quite yet.

Put them above Drake or Evansville now, so the MVC will gladly take them.  Put them above most Horizon schools, so the Horizon would back flip in joy.  UST has so many advantages over the Dakotas even now. Sure that UST won't take the cheap way.

Even in the Big East, it's not hard to be better than DePaul.  UST will get at least lax bids in the Big East eventually, like Denver has.

Shouldn't they actually have lacrosse in order to get a bid?

They're at 20 sports already and need to spend a good amount of money upgrading facilities.

They could maybe stick with 20 but could potentially drop swimming and diving.

St Thomas will be at 22 sports.  Lax is on the process of being added.

Would drop M/W swimming too.

I see they have D2 club in mens and women's but is there anything showing they're actually adding them?

Honest question.

They don't have varsity yet, but presume they would add them.  One article said they would have 22 sports.

Hamline and Augsburg have W lax now, as they just added them.

It would make sense for UST to add DI lax, beating the Gophers to the sport, and getting a Big East berth eventually, and just non scholarship football to maintain their fb rivalry with St Johns and ease costs.

The St Thomas addition from an NDSU perspective.

If St Thomas builds a larger than 6k arena on campus, they should quickly rise to the MVC and NCHC levels.

Again, you're talking about a school that has historically valued local and regional ties over national recognition. It's a huge reach to expect that big of a change so quickly.

Are u talking UST or NDSU?  So you think UST admin are morons?  I dont.  UST has a much higher enrollment and endowment than Providence, which has made waves in MBB and hockey, and about the same as Marquette and Creighton.  That's the company they want.

Some alumni are already giving major bucks for an arena is my bet.

Douple talks about five teams have expressed interest in the Summit.  UST and Augie a given.  Who are the other three?  My wild guess is Duluth, Mankato and St Cloud.

Augie is a backup in case St Thomas doesn’t get the DI waiver.

Would think Lindenwood would be interested, as it’s not to far from WIU, but probably prefers the OVC.

Southern Indiana could have its name in as its been pursuing DI, but it wants the OVC as the primary spot as it has a big new arena, and the OVC plays its tournament now in Evansville.

Washburn, w/o football, is another school as Topeka doesn’t have a DI located there.

All the “southern” schools would be susceptible to leaving.

What conference will UND be in three years from now? Ten years from now?

Who will be in the conference with us?

fcs or fbs in football?

hockey? Same time frames?

I tend to think same hockey conference with two new teams

fcs in football

A renamed Summit with the Montanas, Idaho, EWU and Weber and less UMKC, WIU and ORU.  That would be immensely stable with flagships.  No more dealing with a merry-go-round Summit.

Agree that hockey will see ten members.

FBS, because if the NCAA splits into FCS and FBS divisions, hockey could be hurt.

Football:  FCS. Unless landscape of college football changes to the 3 tier system for D1 schools.  Then we will be in whatever the second tier is called.

Hockey: NCHC.  There will be more than 8 teams, but I can't see more than 10.

All other sports: Summit League.  The Montana's/Idaho's/etc wont join a revamped Summit League.  The I29 Corridor of the Summit is stable.  None of the Dakota's/Omaha are going anywhere.

As UND learned and UST will find out, 21-22 sports in DI doesn’t work.  UST will need to cull and grow their budget 20+ million to maintain 16 sports and compete.  Playing DI scholarship hockey and football ain’t going to fly for at least 10 years.  Suggesting there will be scholarship hockey and football right away is foolish.

MSP has insatiable demand for hockey and lacrosse.  Start lax and join the Big East as an associate - there are rumors that they are talking.  Drop M/W tennis and M/W swimming as they aren't spectator sports anyway.  Keep baseball, softball, M/W soccer as they are.  Keep fb non scholarship and keep the St John rivalry in that sport.

Unless you are a football-revenue-positive- P5, or have a massive athletics endowment fund.

Rumors that the Arizona’s want in the Big 12 for bigger TV audiences.

Dont think they would leave the California’s.

That's too big of a change. It'd change their whole target audience and recruiting footprint. I suspect the Arizonas want something from the PAC12 and this is their way of getting some attention.

There has also been speculation that USC would go B12.   The B12 has so much larger a national TV audience with a smaller population.  USC wants badly to be nationally relevant in fb again, which a middle USA P5 conference with OU and UT could deliver.  The Arizona’s wouldnt lose much of if they had a piece of California with USC as a conference mate.  USC is all about fb.  The B12 would just have to pawn off WV.

The much anticipated failing of the B12 would be dead.  Cincy, Houston and the UXF’s would be stuck in the AAC for another generation.
