Have any of the UND students on this board seen the players in the gym yet? Of course, there are no organized practices yet but the players are undoubtedly on the court everyday. I am curious how both the veterans and rookies are looking?

Do we know if Wilmer and Goodman are healthy?

I've seen them at the gym...but it was during a volleyball match and they were taunting the opposing team. :silly:

It would be nice if Wilmer is healthy and able to contribute some productive minutes this year. If we are able to gets some production down low (meaning 1-2 guys other than Brekke step it up a bit), I think we should have a pretty solid season.

Will be very interested to see what kind of regular rotation Jones uses this year, i.e. eight, nine or even ten players? Seems likely that some players who either did, or would have started two years ago may have a very tough time getting minutes.

I agree - do we have any idea whether everyone is healthy?

Have not seen or heard anything out at practice- but they were having a team tailgating event near the Fighting Sioux club tent before the Drake game. I asked Mitch how he's doing on my way by- since he doesn't know me from anybody, he may have responded differently, than what he does with close freinds but I said, how you feeling headin into this year Big Mitch? and he replied "feeling pretty good and really excited to go into the season feelin that way" that was the jist of the conversation. I hope that is the case Personally, I believe if they could get about 9 to 12 minutes out of him per game where he can step due to Brekke with Fouls, maybe go really big with a line-up with Mitchell floating on the perimeter, and Brekke & him inside it would really add to our interior depth. What I think we are all forgetting is that Allard has pretty much become a '4' meaning he comes in for Mitchell. With Mitchell, Brekke, Allard & Wilmer we have the potential to have decent depth inside. They all can bring something to the table. Brekke- great interior post moves. Mitchell- excellent shot blocker and lethal shooter when he's got the stroke dialed in. Allard, great motor, very good defender. Wilmer, tremendous length- and can move pretty good.

I completely agree, this staff has a lot of interesting decisions to make. Also, I will be curious to see what happens to us defensively as Coach Moody, was always mentioned as the Coach that really worked and taught the defense. Defense was an area where I thought we improved a great deal last year...considering we went to primarily a man to man. Where as the previous years we had been in that 3-2 zone. There may have been some growing pains and there still is a ways to go from where I would like to see us overall defensively but I thought last year was the first sign in a while that we had it heading in the right direction in a big way.

I see us going 10 deep to start with. The entire starting 5 is back with (Brekke,Huff,Schuler,Webb and Mitchell) so I dont really think this will change especially the way these guys finished up the year. We will have Anderson and the canadian (sorry cant think of his name right now) rotating in at the guard positions. Goodman will back up Huff and Allard will back up Mitchell. At the center spot I see Wilmer backing up Brekke and maybe some of time for Archer. We have a solid backup at every postion this year and whoever is hot will play the most in that paticular game. It could be a very nice luxury for Jones and company. It will also make practices very competitive. Go Sioux

I like what I am seeing out of Men's BB, after so many tough transitional years. All five of our starters from the end of last season's Great West champion team are back and they are all SOPHOMORES!!! Three more solid seasons (hopefully), including two seasons full-D1 in an autobid conference, to look forward to with this roster. I also like the fact that two big men, Goodman (6'8") and Wilmer (6'11''), are back from injuries this year. Don't know much about the incoming frosh, especially this Antwi Lenny kid out of Canada. Should be an exciting run for the next few years. I hope Jones can keep loading up like it appears he has been doing in recent years.

Oh by the way, last year's 19-15 record was an +11 swing from the year prior! Very nice :)

Actually, I think Spence is listed as a generous 6'5 but that's nit picking. There's no doubt I'm glad to have him back. This team has the potential to be incredibly deep. Meaning when we go to the bench- we may not be losing a lot. The question is can we get it all to come together not only this year but next when it will really count.

Also, I loved that of all the pieces of information there, I thought the one about of all the freshman classes a year ago around the country ours contributed the most to our point totals at 65%. That's a lot of scoring that hopefully will only improve and get better.

Number one freshman scoring class in the nation as compared to total team points. That is huge for years to come. Hopefully the chemistry will not change much with this class and they continue to fine tune thier skills for this year and the next two.

Looking forward to the tournament runs in 2013 and 2014. Imagine winning the Big Sky regular season. (Winner automatically hosts the Big Sky tournament). Just imagine counting down the seconds in the Betty (or Ralph) and rushing the floor as UND wins the Big Sky Tournament Championship and heads for the NCAA Tournament!!! COuld be a lofty prediction, but hey, it could happen!!

In the Herald live chat today, Wayne Nelson stated that he expects Gentry will play as a true freshman, along with Antwi. If so, competition just got that much tougher for playing time on the perimeter.

Having played on a HS team with three blue-chip recruits, Gentry was on the the court as an assist and defensive specialist. But his ability to shoot out the lights was shown in Indiana HS All Star games, so he definitely has a lot of offensive potential that were never really exposed in his H.S. stats. Gentry could be a real sleeper talent-wise.

With so many Big Sky games at elevation, it will be important to have a lot of depth, especially for the transition game to work.

Just watched the basketball media day video on Fightingsioux.com..............

Jones said that Antwi will play and will be asked to score. Said Gentry will have an impact defensively. Said Benton will redshirt.

Also said there is good competition for the center position between Brekke, Wilmer, Stockdale, and Mathison..............................

I assume that is coach-speak and translates to "we have some talent at the position, it's Brekke's position to lose, Wilmer is coming along nicely, and Stockdale and Mathison provide much needed depth".

I think Wilmer is the key. If he can play solid minutes every game with his size it will be a major plus. Lenny is from Vanier College. Is that actually a college in Canada? If you google Vanier College it appears to be a university but he is listed as a freshman so I am confused. We definately have plenty of depth at the guard positions as Lenny is also listed as a combo guard along with Webb, Anderson and Schuler. I assume Gentry will be a 3 along with Huff and Goodman. Mitchell and Allard will have us solid at the 4. Alot of good competition for playing time this year. Hopefully everyone will stay healthy this year cause that is always a key. Go Sioux

He is indeed a Freshman at UND- older like Webb was when he came in. Vanier is a Canadian school, I'm not sure on how the Canada system is there but apparently it's a little different so he is a freshman like Webb was. Wilmer is a very big key- agreed. The key from him is productive minutes every time he steps on the floor- how many shots does alter or block? How many touches does he get on the block? Little things with just enough scoring could prove large.

"College" in Canada means very different than in the US. Canadian kids go off to University, not college. College there can mean prep school, vocational school, or JC. A HS in Canada is often either a "collegiate" meaning university track or Tech for a vocational track. Vanier is both an English prep school (for French speakers going to English University) as well as a JC and vocational school.
