Long term in my eyes have changed because we have several major changes in Bubba tenure he took over the program when it was pretty low as it had been going back to the time of Pat Behrns tenure as head coach at UND. I look after that it took nearly 10 years to become power in Division II and after that another 5 years to win national championship. But Bubba turned program around to where they won Big Sky championship but then we had where whole athletic department had to be reorganized and there were cuts to programs not good time for UND athletics. Then UND switched conferences but football played conference schedule but not part of the conference. Then they played independent schedule for a year not good for team trying to recruit and retain players where there is no media presence for the program. Not lot of the coaches would have stayed under those circumstances especially two years.
Then we come to entering the Missouri Valley Conference the toughest conference in FCS Football after two year period a team without conference home. Then add in Covid opening season in Missouri Valley and extra covid years for eligibility we have at least 3 to 4 lost seasons to build a program. Then look where we are at we have team that is top 10 to 15 in FCS football with chance to continue to move up to be one of the elite teams in FCS football. The problem is our two closest rivals have had more success and have won multiple championships we haven't and people are impatient they wanted it now. People forget it takes time and UND is finally putting together commitment in facilities and funding now to make that next jump and with that finding the talent to put on the field to win national championship. This is not to mention of era NIL, transfer portal, and getting funding to build a program. Take a look around how many of teams in FCS football that were good teams have gone way backwards that were powers in this division of football.
Most of us do understand that things do take some time, but they don't always have to take an eternity. Weber State was the doormat of the Big Sky when Jay Hill took over. In his 4th season he won the Big Sky, well tied for 1st, and made the quarterfinals that year. They won or tied for Big Sky the next three years after that and made it to the semi finals in his 6th year. His first year when he took over a crap team they were not very good but Weber came into the Alerus and beat us.
That and the continued horrible road record and so often not showing up in big games or playoff games, and not being able to decide when to go for 2 or not are basic, but still having blunders after 10 years........is the reason why many are not happy about an extension.

Football Spring Wrap-up
Saturday, April 6, 2024 8 am to 10 amI think that is this weekend.
Thanks, not sure why I thought it was last weekend.

Wasn't the spring wrap up on Friday, any revelations or news from that?

Honest question - if the football team had the resources the hockey team had - would it make a difference (I think we could assume if they had those resources the staff would be upgraded).
Yes it would make a difference IMO. But all of the resources in the world wouldn't have prevented the dumb fake punt against NDSU or poor two point conversion choices. Or the ability to get your team up for games. We crushed NDSU at home, so we just have some talent....but we were flat the rest of the year.

Being ranked #1 doesn’t mean squat when you are nowhere near #1 at the end of the season!
Oh I totally get it....that's why I said I agree with what he said, how you finish the season is the only thing that really matters. But can you honestly even fathom the thought of UND football bring ranked #1 at any point during the season. I can't.

If you are on the ledge with the bubba extension feel free to wander over to the hockey playoff thread.. most overfunded program in college hockey.. still can’t get out of the first round.
Yep. Although UND football would sure love to even just be ranked the #1 team in the country at some point during the season. Football team hasn't even sniffed that in two decades.

I'm looking forward to the new wrinkles in our offense. fingers crossed on defense improvement.
I am too, not only the new wrinkles but also to see the impact of having a different QB. You would think the QB battle would be some that everyone would be talking about right now, but haven't heard much of anything.
I did see Miller had an article not too long ago but I was unable to read it. I had an online subscription last fall so I could read the football articles, but then cancelled it in January. Which even before without a subscription I could read one or two periodically but now I can't read any without paying for subscriptions. So not being able to read any articles probably makes me feel more out of the loop, but has also been little to no discussion on here.
Think I saw the spring wrap up thing is today?

This has got to be as dead on here as it's ever been during spring ball

After firing Mussman, yes the initial goal was to be competitive, which Bubba has done that. But we really have taken very few strides since 2016. Our playoff games have been for the most part pretty embarrassing. I felt embarrassed during the first half of that Weber State playoff game. Score ended up being a lot closer than the game really was. Got steam rolled by Nicholls.........yes Nicholls State. Embarrassing.

I apologize in advance if I become a pessimistic dick at times over the next four years. Come game time I'll still be rooting hard, but if things go south it's going to be hard to stay positive.....at all.

As I see it, after Danny left, they had two options - either start from zero, or keep Bubba on and go out to find talent that can come in as an assistant and be ready to take over when Bubba retires. I like keeping Bubba and building internally to improve and succeed him. I'm really curious how so many people seem to think that the answer is just to ditch Bubba and suddenly we are beating the state schools every year and getting tan in Frisco. He's made some head scratching decisions over the past few seasons that have cost us games, there's no doubt about that, but I just don't think replacing him is going to gain us ground faster than building up under him.
Bubba had two more years left on his contract already, we weren't ditching him.
Bubba has hit his ceiling, I'd rather risk it on a guy with a lower floor but higher ceiling. Since 2016 UND football has not progressed at all really. While the new coach may not consistently beat the SU's.....we already know Bubba can't. It's nice to have hope, now we already know what we are going to be getting the next 4 years. Mediocre football, with one regular season win at home against a slightly better than average team. But zero big wins. NDSU win last was the exception to the rule last year. Likely a 20 point NDSU win this fall.

Will never forget his opening kickoff return vs. the Bison this season, to get the route started. The only game that I got to see in person.
His kickoff will definitely be remembered for a long time. Not quite as big as the Mooney strip and score...but that kickoff was electric!!

Are you really trying to say he doesn't work hard? He is in over his head and don't believe he can take the program to the next level, but to imply he doesn't work are in unfair.
I'm guessing he meant it as in his current job he does work hard ....and has good results. But if mediocrity is acceptable and you get promoted.....he should stop working as hard so he only gets average results.....so he could get an extension like Bubba.......and make a million dollars over the next four years.
I for one thing Bubba does work hard. He is just not the guy to get us to the top of the mountain.

I don't see what everyone is so upset about. 1) You all seem to be certain that Bubba is going to keep the program afloat and in playoff contention. Can't say the same for a new hire. 2) Bubba is just keeping the seat warm for Danny to come back in a few years with the SDSU book of secrets and take over as HC. He'll hand Danny a solid program that is primed and ready to take from good to great.
Danny could have taken over after the 2025 season, no need to wait until 2027. Or even someone else other than Danny.
Sure Bubba will get us our 6-7 wins and there is no guarantee what the next coach will do. But I'd rather risk seeing what someone else can do....even if it means the new guy sucks and is canned after 3 years. I'd rather risk it for the chance the new coach could be better and make us a contender. It's been 10 freaking years of mediocrity.....now we have to sit on our hands and watch another 4 years of the same predictable thing......F that.
Ok the funny part about my comment above is me saying a UND coach would get canned after 3 years. We know that would never happen...unless he went 0-11 for three straight years.

My two really good NDSU buddies are going to laugh when they hear the news about Bubba, along with every other NDSU fan. Maybe when they come down to Phoenix in two weeks for the Final Four they will convert me to NDSU fans. Ok that won't happen, but it is completely depressing knowing we have zero chance to have any type realistic chance or even hope...... of contending for a title for another four years!!!
The complete meltdown of the rest of the season after he NDSU game was so glaring that Bubba doesn't have what it takes to coach up and lead a team to greatness.

oh man, the Rah Rah group on facebook loves to tell us what a great guy Bubba is....DOSENT MAKE HIM A GOOD COACH. kinda like saying Trey Lance is a great athlete....dosent make him a great NFL QB.
I know, I initially saw the news about the extension on FB.....went and read the comments...thinking some people might be unhappy about it.....but it was only comments about people being excited, give me a break! If you really care about ND football not sure how you could be excited about this!

I know other schools will lose guys too, we are not alone. Still sucks though. A good OL guy is probably the worst to lose, but a good OL probably has the most opportunities in the portal as every school is always looking for another good OL player.
