  1. Theoretically, Vanek has two years of eligibility left, thus one more year of posturing if he returns to MN for his Jr. year. This is probably Bo's last chance to have some leverage in his negotiations.

Vanek belongs to Buffalo and they don't have the money to bring him in. I disagree somewhat on this being Bo's last chance however. If he repeats or improves his numbers from the last 2 yrs and/or wins the Hobey, I doubt he'd be worse off next year. Ottawa obviously likes what they see.

  2. I was looking at some of the free agent signings around the NHL, and when I was looking on yahoo, I saw that the Los Angeles Kings signed Adam Hauser. Man I hope they dont think he can solve their goaltending situation. I used to love it when the sioux played the goofers, because it was almosted a gauranteed win.

Almost a guaranteed win?? Against Hauser, the Sioux were less than .500 when he was the goalie of record, although Weber had to bail him out a few times. In games when he went head to head with our beloved Karl, the Sioux were a mere 2-2-2. I agree that Hauser was more or less a stiff in college, but unfortunately it was far from a guaranted Sioux win when he was in nets.

  3. I lived in Grand Forks my whole life until last year, loved it, I just hung out with the wrong people and was going nowhere. Moved to the cities in October, blows donkey cack, and the rate of pay isn 't much better here vs the cost of living. Most people work at least two jobs down here. Unfortunatly if you can get in to see a college hockey game down here the arena sucks, you can't walk during intermissions, and you have to bring your own food and drink if you don't want to miss half the game. :)

You're high. Mariucci is a great place to watch hockey. I agree that the cities is a bit too chaotic, but to bad mouth one of the best venue's to view hockey is over the top. If your having too much trouble making it to the concession stands, why don't park your fat ass on the couch and watch the games on TV.

  4. I don't know if Stafford will be back next season, but his chances are much higher than if he had gone in the top ten.

If Stafford is a question mark, then Blake Wheeler will be a big question mark. Will he make it to Minneapolis? Will he drop the bomb on the Gophers and sign with a major junior team? Will he sign with Phoenix before or after his freshman year at Minnesota?

All in all, whatever happens to Stafford, we did get a solid year of his play at UND (worst case scenario). I'm happy with that. We'll have to watch Mr. Wheeler next year whether he stays at Breck or goes off to juniors.

And there is the very real possibility that I may be wrong and Wheeler comes to the Gophers and stays for 3-4 years. Hard to tell right now. Wheeler is only a junior in high school.

Wheeler will play in Green Bay next year. If he fills out and has an impact year in the USHL, he could be long gone before ever becoming a Gopher.

  5. The AAU is the Amateur Athletics Union (not to be confused the Association of American Universities).

Boy was I off. I had always thought it stood for "Arrogant A-holes Unlimited"

On behalf of Gophers fans everywhere, thanks for the clarification.

  6. It would make a very good signature line. Are the gophers beating us in any catagories?

Yes, in fact they are. They were AAU champs back in 1939. At least they hang a banner that says so.

  7. I think we are all too hung up on each other. I love stats, but I don't care what stats Briggs, Parise or Brandt post. Last year I would have picked Berkhoel, Bruckler, or Reichmuth over any of the above. I'm guessing there will be three more WCHA goalies next year that I'd take over a Sioux or Gopher goalie.

add Chris King to that list as well.

  8. I just don't like the sound of that if I were on the waiting list. Preference points? Is this an offical system or just someone in the FSC saying give us a grand and we can move you up 50 spots. I would surely want to see something on paper with some guarantees. Based on what I'm experiencing there is an overall lack of communication from the FSC on what I feel should of first and foremost concern in a customer service driven business.

Quite frankly I wish you were right. But I tried to bribe them with a $2000 cash under the table and they wouldn't take it. Heck, I would have paid the $10k fee to be in the Emerald Club just to get off the damn list.

    Thanks for the info.

  9. Right on, Sic... and so will our friends who are #118 on the hockey waiting list. In fact, they joined the FSC just to advance their position on said list.

Those that are giving up their seats because of the new FSC rules are not going to get them back soon... I hope they realize that before they do something rash. I was really pissed that tickets went up again this year, but what am I going to do? Give up my seats? :(

    Yeah... right. ;)

Correct me if I'm misinterpreting this post, but are you saying that if you join FSC you can move up on the waiting list? Last time I checked I was sitting at #221 and haven't moved up much in the past 2 yrs.

  10. This may be nothing more than rumor but sources close to Minnesota say Vanek will likely be history too. Not because he has a contract looming with Buffalo, but rather due to his frustration towards Lucia and the way he's been riding him for his laziness. It's also rumored that he's no longer attending classes. That coupled with his playing for Austria in the World Championships next week, look for headlines of his early departure sometime this summer.

  11. Sorry man. Just venting over a rather poorly played game. Hopefully tomorrow they can hit the tape on some passes and win a face-off.

Thank God the Parise boys played well or Kurt Russell might have had another staring role.

  12. To me, it's not whether or not the Sioux beat HC, they will. It's all about momemtum. Losing to MN last Sat didn't hurt ND or MN, But beating HC by a narrow margin will. The Sioux need to get it going early and often. Beating HC 4 - 1 would not be good. They need to pound this team with 45 to 50 shots and 8 to 10 goals while allowing no more than 1.

  13. No, Vanek is not the first person in the history of college hockey to take a similar shot (doesn't make it right but it sure seems to make it easier to pile on criticism - or is it envy?)

It must be envy because for some reason I wish it were Matt Greene who would have cheap shotted Vanek. Of course that would have drawn blood, a stretcher, an ambulance, picketing at the Austrian embassy, etc. etc. What's worse, Greene would have definitely gotten 5 minutes.

By the way, I have watched most of the Gopher games this year and I have come to a couple of conclusions. Keith Ballard is the best offensive D-man in college hockey and will likely be a Hobey Finalist again next year if he's still around. However, he's also the chippiest player in the WCHA.

  14. Commodore and Greene progressed immensely from their freshman year, but they were both physically intimidating on the ice as rookies. Maybe it's just me, but I haven't seen that out of Smaby. I don't see that as the game he's trying to play. If it were, I'd probably have a bit more respect for him. I'm hoping Matt will prove me wrong next year.

The Sioux desperately need a defenseman that can rush the puck.

  15. I agree the Sioux have the best freshman class in the country and Smaby has contributed to that distinction. However, of the freshman, he's the biggest disappointment (IMO). I think he's been burned way too much this year and has not done well on outlet passing (too many whiffs). I agree in time he'll be a solid defenseman, but he has a lot of work to do.

  16. Take Murray away and we still have BB, Z Par, Fylling, Lundblohm, McMahon, Hale, and Genoway to name a few of the bigger boys that can score.

    Hale can score? Doing what?
