    NCAA Regional Attendance

Sioux Falls had a total attendance of 11,804 for the three games with 6,113 fans attending the regional final between Minnesota and Boston University on March 30. According to attendance numbers reported by the four 2024 regional hosting sites, Providence, Rhode Island had an attendance of 12,823 for its two sessions, while Springfield, Massachusetts had a total attendance of 9,659 and Maryland Heights, Missouri had an average attendance of 3,148.

In 2018, when Sioux Falls hosted three Minnesota teams (St. Cloud State, Minnesota-Mankato and Minnesota-Duluth), the combined attendance was 16,007, more than the other three hosting cities.

Sioux Falls will host another college hockey regional in 2026.

  2. Link to the Herald Story: Sanford Health to provide UND athletes with physician services - Grand Forks Herald | Grand Forks, East Grand Forks news, weather & sports

    Starts July 1.

It appears that UND athletics is moving away from Altru as team physicians and official healthcare. Increased coverage in the Grand Forks metro and merging of Valley Bone and Joint has definitely made them a better option then whey they bid before the last 10 year (I believe?) contract with Altru who donated $10 million to the Indoor Performance Center at the time. Will be interesting to see what else comes with this, as I know in Fargo, Bemidji, Vermillion they end up having their name they have athletics facilities named after them and may bring in additional funding for these projects we have in motion.

I haven't followed along recently but I assume the Family Medicine Residency in Grand Forks is still connected to Altru? I know Dr. Mann (Football) and Dr. Greek (Hockey) are part of the Altru FMR program. Will they change to Sanford or will UND transition from their long-time team providers?

  3. I also think that the Fargo game if it wasn't a overtime winning goal it woud've stood. Shouldn't matter which part of the game but it seems to. Also I am surprised the NCAA doesn't put temporary cameras along the bluelines.

  4. BU and a offsides goal review. Center ice cam looks like he is still contacting, far end camera the skate blade cant be seen and you see white under the black of the skate boot.

Ice hasn’t seemed great for DU game and now I switch it to BU game and it looks really bad!  Another reason to have regionals in campus rinks that have had ice in all season and have pros taking care of it.

Both Sioux Falls and Springfield have hockey all season, Did Sioux Falls take their ice out with the consecutive wrestling, summit league, and high school basketball? I know other events they just cover it. The issue that I have heard was more related to the NCAA makes them remove advertisements, and other logos from the ice by scrapping layers off, then they repaint and add the NCAA and host logo the week of. Be better if they could just let the rinks keep their ice way of and maybe just add a NCAA/Host badge in a few places like how the NHL now does with the Stanley Cup Playoffs logos along the bluelines?

The rink location was decided 3 or 4 years ago.  Perhaps bracket integrity should have gone out the window so that UND could play in front of 2,500 fans in a 15,000 seat arena out east?  But then we’d be whining about being sent out east.  It’s a conundrum.

I think the being sent out east argument would really only be valid if we were the #1 seed. UND also declined to be the bidding host school with the Sioux Falls Sports Authority after the last regional they hosted together and decided to focus on their Fargo bids.

  7. Camera feels too zoomed in for the Sioux Falls regional, maybe its just after watching the wider angle from the Denver game, or maybe I am just imagining things.

So we’re in agreement then that it’s primarily UND fans whining and no one else?

I would agree with that. It might be getting echoed wider now because of the reach of UND fans are largest mass in number as well as CHN, GFH, etc posting about the issue with having the largest traveling fanbase that could fill that rink by itself.

Probably forgot about the day off or Denver picked the earlier game.

Do #1 seeds get choice for the Regional? or is this ESPN choice?

And we’re busy whining about our venue’s seating capacity…

Any other teams there no one would've made a fuss. Should there be a 2500 seat rink for regional? No, but beggers cant be choosers either. Not alot of western facilities that can meet the requirements of seating, non host site, etc. Need to develop more western programs, even then you wont have 5 schools within 30 miles like you do out east but would still help, still a north eastern heavy system D1 hockey is.

When was out last OT win in the NCAA tournament? Drawing a blank. The losses are what sticks with you.

Officially? Does anyone remember? Unofficially? Most people think that you can't use the camera on the far end of the ice to call offsides when the multiple closer cameras do not show it.

So this is co-hosted by AIC and UMASS?

If AIC won Atlantic Hockey, who is the 4th seed in this regional?

It is actually AIC home rink. I have not seen anything about AIC being a co-host though, so maybe thats the loophole, you can host at a different teams home venue? We also had the ghost host of Providence in Providence, by having Brown host but still always placed at the Dunkin Donut center, which is their basketball home arena.

Midco, please let us know who in administration positions were cut.

i thought Midco was headed for bigger things but now they suck just like wday does.

soon everyone will be paying for every broadcast of every sport to many different _platforms

what the hell is Fenton doing

i hope UND hockey doesn’t become a summit broadcast

In the regional sports world it seems that you have to adapt to streaming world or falter. It been surprising to me that Midco Sports has stuck around as long as it has and even grown in recent years, which may have also led it down a financial rabbit hole. More and more people are moving away from the cable packages and moving to direct streaming platforms which brings overall subscriber numbers down. And with NCHCTV and MidcoSports Plus there was little incentive to pay for the entire Midco cable package just to watch the sports. Even the Wild and Twins being put on Bally Sports Plus also took away the requirement.

Now are they also struggling with the online subscription service financially like the other big services? Also having all the MVFC games on ESPN+ was a cheaper option then MidcoSports Plus/Cable and ESPN/TNT/ETC are planning a combined sports streaming service for later this year. They must be thinking to adapt or lose out.

Whose the und personality on staff

Jody Norstedt was but he resigned before layoffs were announced. Taylor Budge was retained, so may be a increased role for her, probably not PXP but shows they are not canning everyone and believe she has a important role with UND athletics. Alex Heinert also appears to have been retained. While he has his CBS Sports assignments as well that is not every weekend.

Would not be surprised for basketball and volleyball to see Ryan Cunningham come back to doing PxP. He did some previously for those sports as a freelancer for the games that were broadcast on Bally/Fox Sports North.

So are they gunna use our radio guys for in-house play by play

seems small time to me and d2-d3 budget

They mentioned keeping up contractual obligations with UND/USD/SDSU, and I know UND especially hockey has been huge for them so I would see them keeping that as is with a dedicated PXP. I believe they kept a USD and SDSU personality on staff. For other events its better to freelance and not pay fulltime benefits. For lower viewed events as well you might see the radio crew or a school appointed staff. Even the old Fight Sioux Sports Network had dedicated PXP.

  16. Think that more than likely they will continue to offer the ability to broadcast or stream the coverage but leave it up to the schools to hire and pay for their PXP personnel?
