Gotta admit, being from a small town and with family originating in Walsh County it's pretty sad to see the decline of the Spoilers.  A lot of great history in that program, hope they can find a way back to contention once again.  Dickinson is a nice surprise this year though, so will have an underdog to cheer for.

Century has some good ol' Walsh County roots throughout the team if your looking for storylines to support....

    This move seems very dumb

    It's embarrassing.

The hell is he arguing with stripes about, the dork commentators are just scoring zingers on him left and right...

kinda like goals in the nets

Red River did hit the post 4 or 5 times last night. I don't think the game was as close as the score would indicate. With that being said, RR does have some goalie and defensive issues, as well as a lack of scoring depth. All five goals came from the top line. Combine all three of those and an upset somewhere down the road seems possible.

They seem to have avoided letdown all year so sometimes it may come down to the fact, they're a dang well coached team that has enough mid tier depth to sustain and outlast. Lot of talented kids.

They may not have the top goalie or D but they're still pretty good.

    Outpaced my expectations for sure.

    The favorite now most definetly.

Have a couple friends that work for PSP.

My opinion, if it isn't on network TV then PSP is providing a service and the cost should be zero for providing the service.

well yes agreed but it is a "bit" more complicated than that.

in the end I'd really like to know why NDHSAA is charging so damn much for the "rights"....... I suppose I could inquire there.

Is what it is for this year.

Very unfortunate.  The costs to produce the tournament probably drove this.  Nick has done so much with the PSP network for high school athletics.

He once told me the cost of what these networks (PSP, BEK, Your live event) have to pay the NDHSAA for these events and its a bleeping tragedy.  Yes, that's a direct shot from me at the NDHSAA.

So much, and done such a good job.

NDHSAA purse is an absolute barrier for the best interests of the kids yet again.

But $30 (really any amount probably) is an absolute non starter for 99% of the casual extended family, or interested high school hockey fan in the region, let alone anyone maybe tuning in to check out a kid as a potential interest for their org.

I don't have all the answers for the best way to run these things. It is truly an web of crap with all the different options and production places, tiers of rights holders, owners, bidders.. fees/fines/etc

even finding people to want to do this is tough, especially at basketball tourney time.

Been an tough year for coverage of WDA hockey OUTSIDE of the great work being done by PSP..

Although BEK did a decent job of picking some games up, and the guy firing up the thing in Williston shows promise as well.

Is what it is, I guess.

  6. Huge dick-punch to those that thought they were going to have their friends and family, and interested hockey fans watch the WDA tournament.

After securing the rights to the WDA tourney PSP Network has now announced they have suddenly switched to a subscription model.

No more games on YouTube to easily watch. (YouTube will provide only the audio)

Now every person who wants to watch has to log in on a computer or mobile app only...

@ $14.99 a day per user or $29.99 for the tourney......

Remember that terrible NFHS Network option that we previously discussed...this is arguably worse.
As it is about the same experience, albeit with announcers, but at triple the price tag.

Just a damn shame all around

I sure hope that doesn't happen. Plenty of teams around the state have had brutal season after brutal season but stuck around. Schedule some games with Watford, Sidney, Wahp etc. to get more winnable games on the schedule. They will be fine especially with the pretty solid bismarck youth numbers.

Its probably a bit deeper than that at this point.....

There’s been at least two years where they’ve had to open up the top of the Ralph I know that but I would say at least 4000 on average

That's gotta be pre-covid and dare I say pre-smartphone era.

There hasn't been enough people to fill any bowl in quite a while it seems.

Bismarck gets what it deserves for not doing a damn thing about a proper arena, No economic impact for you....

but Minot could host a state boys tourney just as good as Fargo can..

    Better actually

.....CAUSE YOU COULD GET A GYAAATDAMN HOTEL ROOM IN MINOT!!!!!

Bottineau says they aren't allowed to broadcast their feed tonight due to NDHSAA rights.  Not sure how Williston is able too but glad they are, gives us something to watch.

I'm guessing the Williston entity got a sponsor to pay the "fine" for doing it outside the NFHS Network rights or is also shooting the feed through their system.

The WDA rights portion I believe  expires after the '25 season.

Anyone who votes to renew it should be tied padless to a goalposts and have the entirety of the squirt international participants fire pucks at them as part of the Squirt-lympics

The NFHS Network deal is the worst thing to happen to high school sports viewability since the invention of the moving picture.

The fan in me likes the Thursday-Friday-Saturday, but it makes sense for region tournaments to split it up and do Tuesday-Friday-Saturday.  Once you get to the Saturday of the State hockey tournament the kids from the West are playing their 6th game in 10 days.  I think there is a bit more jump on Saturday at the EDC with it not being the third game in three days for those teams as well.

At the same time, the travel is a bit more feasible in the East region for a Tuesday night game.  You don't have a Williston to Jamestown scenario, or a Bottineau to Dickinson type trip.  The worst trip in the EDC would be Devils Lake to Fargo which isn't terrible with interstate.

There is that pesky "school" thing on Tuesday/Wed morning to consider... but I guess not a ton different than Hazen and Bismarck High's trek tonight.

I’m old school and like the way wdc does it. Better atmosphere imo

but financially willing to bet edc makes more as only 4 teams traveling

That and eliminates potentially additional nights in hotels and odd game times.

Say if Bottineau wins vs Hazen they play at 11am Thursday in Bismarck. That's potentially another overnight stay I would think, or a really early travel day, but certainly a huge disadvantage even for an 8 seed.

Although an 11 am gametime seems pretty odd and out of the norm for a 1 seed too.

I like how the EDC does it. Little more incentive to do well during the regular season to get a first round home game.

    Absolutely agree.

WDA need to follow this and frankly it's not a bad idea to do quarterfinals for state that way too.

They pulled that off during the covid year and I thought it was interesting.

Would eliminate the consulation and 5th place game, but dare I say it would make for a better combined boys/girls semis/champ situation, also maybe better for scheduling and rink availability.

Maybe wouldn't have to push half the games over to a red-headed stepchild rink of shame like they do in Fargo.

Parise scoring for the Avs is weird, but good for him getting more games in. Not his fault the Wild offered him such a lengthy contract.

And the Minnesota rubes actually still blame the players for taking it.....

    Sure looks that way!

Does anyone know of any teams dealing with an injury bug right now or missing any star players due to injury? It seems like things could be pretty tight in the WDA and certainly are tight in the EDC where a few missing guys could make a big difference. Just was curious

Word on the street is Legacy lost Sr D man Jameson Johnson.

Thats a considerable loss for the Sabers but they did have success when he was out of the lineup earlier in the year so I'd say they are still one of the favorites in the WDA and to break the western first round curse.

I saw some notes that Mandan have most of their injured players back as well. Don't sleep on Mandan, Leingang can win games on his own in net.

Miami needs to get booted from the NCHC due to this stream. This shouldn’t be acceptable.

Make their athletic dept reimburse everyone a prorated portion of the nchc package.

Won't mean a ton of money but maybe signing all those refund checks could teach them a lesson.
