Tommy Ahneman was a problem tonight in the state semifinals! The thing that really impressed was his motor and the effort he played with. Definitely am a fan of his

28 points 17 rebounds 11 of those were O boards

Was there as well.  Very impressive big man, has good feet and good agility around the rim.

  2. Just curious what all the blaming of Chaves is for?  Not defending the guy, just curious.  Because we don't have the money to pay assistants I'm guessing?  Because he hasn't fired Bubba?

  3. I do chuckle a little bit...while I am troubled by Danny's departure, some threads on here have had posts by the usual negative suspects that our coaches never leave because no one wants them.  Now, when one moves on the program is judged to be in shambles.

I don't see the gulf between SDSU and UND being as wide as it is between Minnesota and Ohio State/Michigan. UND seems to be stifled by the antiquated thinking of the old guard and a reluctance to court the Gen Xers/Millennials as alums/potential donors/coaches/fans, etc. I believe I even read a few pages back someone intimate UND should have never left DII. WHAT???

UND has the facilities, the donors, and as I drive down Columbia, I can't think of too many mid-majors that have anything broaching what UND will have for football. There's a little brother/loser mentality here that Grand Forks and UND needs to shake, but believe me, you've got a sleeping giant at the FCS level. One guy in the big chair can make that happen inside of 2 years.

Perhaps not quite that wide, but I don't think it's too far off.  SDSU has 2 titles and several other top 10 years in the last 10-12 years (a few years I think you could make a legit argument they were the second best team in the country to NDSU).  We basically have not won a playoff game since going D1.  Not saying we shouldn't be doing better, I just can't blame Danny for making the move and even though it caught me very off guard, it probably shouldn't have.

  5. I am surprised with Danny being at UND basically his whole adult life, but I can't blame him.  This is similar to someone on the Gophers staff jumping to Ohio State or Michigan, which is fairly common.  It's just a better situation (unfortunately) and a better path to move up which at his age is his clock was ticking.  Honestly a little surprised that SDSU didn't go for a little higher profile hire being we've won basically no playoff games under him, but I guess if this was just for a QB coach job it makes sense.

  6. Hardly a program in the country that doesn't want good edge rushers and LB so I'm sure the competition is fairly stiff for them in the portal.  Hopefully we can land a Hoosman type who was under the radar but has the tools and blossoms.

So when is this max exodus supposed to happen? Portal has been open for 3 days……

So we end up losing one underclassman to the portal????  I thought some of you were FB experts…….

That may have been your first mistake :p

  8. Also would agree that a portal QB doesn't make sense (unless by some odd situation Feeney or Kaminski transfer out of here before Xmas - never know in 2023!).  Not to mention I can't imagine a transfer would want to come here knowing there are 2 solid kids that are already in line.

If UND plays to potential he is first team all-conference and earns some AA awards.

'tis a little curious that NDSU gets 6 first teamers and we get a kick returner, with the same conference record...probably speaks to the individual talent deficit we've been talking about.

What’s it tell you when none of our assistants are being poached for bigger better things

only one I can think of was schmidt

We've had a couple new RB coaches over the years haven't we?  Not sure they were necessarily "poached" though.

Would be curious to know the turnover on SDSU's staff over the last 10 years (other than Stig retiring).  Obviously NDSU has had several guys move up...

Again, if you think base defensive alignment is the issue, then, well, think again. I definitely think changes on multiple levels are needed, but this isn’t it.

With that said, I don’t care if the base alignment is 3-4, 4-3, 5-2, 3-3-5, etc. I just want more competent football being played out on the field. No reason a defense should be so poorly coached that it gives up 3rd and long after 3rd and long time and time again. God awful coaching and defensive positioning/strategy by the coaching staff in those situations, which are supposed to be favorable to the defense, all season long.

Very much agree that with the D talent we have, scheme probably isn't going to matter much.  You have D linemen that get no pressure, LB that aren't physical or very good in space and mediocre Dbacks and I don't care if Brian Flores is here it's not going to be great.  Obviously recruiting = coaching in college football.  Think I heard a coach once asked what the 3 most important aspects of coaching in college are, his reply: "recruiting."

While I dont disagree with any of your points.. I was happy with our draw.  Clearly the toughest first round matchup, but the chance for a rematch against USD made it a decent draw for us in my book.  If the defense had a pulse outside the 3rd quarter and if the offense had just run the ball we would all be happily heading down to USD next weekend.  If you cant beat a team like Sac St. at home the rest doesnt really matter.. but I generally agree with your points.

    And I agree with yours.

You could probably look at their performance at UNI as well as ours.

Guess it's just the way the cookie crumbles.  Just a little hard to understand how 2 teams with basically the same resumes and the one that lost the head-to-head (badly) gets the weakest opponent in the field and we got probably the toughest of any team that didn't get a home game.  Not to mention SIU and Youngstown got very easy matchups.  Guess it's bad luck being on the western side of the field.

For starters: analytics >>> "stogies and scotch". (PWR is a far better system.)

    Pseudo-regionalization is a joke: Per Massey ...
    #13 gets #65
    #9 gets #35
    #8 gets #38, but ...
    #10 gets #12?

Finally, run a "bottom" FCS tournament for the HBCUs, non-scholly (Pioneer), and Ivys if they want in.

Definitely a head scratcher. Does Sac St not draw well or why didn’t they have a home game?

Hard to figure out how us and Ndsu both have 3 fcs losses and we win head to head and they get paired with the worst team in the field…

  14. Was also at the game. Lack of speed on Defense definitely jumped out. D line just doesn’t win many battles and the loss of McNaboe hurt. As I’ve mentioned in previous weeks, just nobody on the defense that really stands out. A few times we had guys on the edge to contain the QB and he just went around us like youd see in a high school game. Expected the edges to be tough for us but was also surprised at how easily they ran it between the tackles. Need to recruit D hard this year.

also agree that we almost surely win the game if we don’t pass at all in the fourth quarter. Had first and 10 from midfield to start the quarter with all the momentum and then two plays later it’s 3rd and 30 after two sacks. Most days offense takes some imagination but I don’t think this was one of those days.

also agree with someone who mentioned all the subbing on offense - we are constantly running three or four new receivers out there, not sure why, it’s not like we are spreading the ball all over the place. Let guys get in a rhythm a little bit. Other than Bo our receivers had three catches for 13 yards today.

odd how the passing game took a step backward this year - seemed like a strength last year with pretty much the same personnel. Or at least I can’t remember dreading passing downs last year like I did this year.

kudos to sac st. Played a clean game and made plays when they had to. I do not believe they committed a penalty (nor a TO) today which is impressive on the road.

  15. Not sure how many are getting D1 interest.  I saw Pietrzak just got an offer from Southern Cal and Shaffer has had some P5 interest.  Believe St. Romain is committed to NDSU.  Conklin I believe just got offered by NDSU after their title game. Ovsak is a nice athlete but pretty small.

I wasn't sold on Joel being ready as DC; when they announced the Dosch hire I saw the hire of a mentor to help Joel should he need it.

But I miss Tom's insights and how he sees the game on the radio.

Listened to the 4th quarter on the radio - Ralston was actually fairly critical of the offense, at one time said they "disappeared" in 2 of their biggest games (UNI).  Berg was definitely getting cranky as the game wore on.

I've mentioned before, we need better talent on D.  D line is average at best (pass rush below average), Linebackers average and undersized at best, same with secondary.  Adds up to a mediocre defense which is what we've seen most of the year.

Just a weird team with no clear strength from week to week.

  17. Such an inconsistent team, which probably means we just aren't very good.  D plays well, O plays terrible one week.  O plays well, D looks like a sieve vs. Murray and ISU.  Seems we caught lightning in a bottle and everything went right vs. NDSU.  Odd but that's what teams that just aren't great do.

Maybe working in the run game more in the 2nd half would have worked, although it seemed we were pretty committed to it in the first half and only scored 3 points so idk.

Have been a Tommy backer but am ready to move on.  All of the drop back and hesitate and then scramble is getting old - have a hard time believing there is no one open.  Plus the lack of the ability to throw a deep ball - seems like anytime we (rarely) try it's rarely accurate enough to be caught.
