  1. From the wire:

American Indian activist Vernon Bellecourt says it would be wrong-headed for the N-C-A-A to consider allowing schools to use Indian nicknames, even if tribes

    give their OK.

Bellecourt also says the issue should go beyond Indian nicknames to include other monikers -- like Notre Dame's Fighting Irish.

He says he's heard from people of Irish ancestry who are opposed to the nickname use. He says they think they're being portrayed as drunks or leprechauns.

  2. Hockey's Future released Atlanta's 2005 draft review, which includes Andrew Kozek. They had a nice comment about UND -

He was heavily recruited by US colleges and will be with University of North Dakota -- and they have a very good hockey program.
However, unless my info has changed and there was a trade, they ended on a bad note.
He will join another Thrashers prospect, defenseman Mike Vannelli at UND.
  3. I don't think it will go all the way through a court battle. Once FSU shows they are serious, the NCAA will grant FSU an exeption and that will open the door for schools like UND, Illinios and Utah to also apply for an exemption. UND will bring up many positives of the name and the programs it has supporting Native Americans and they will also get an exemption. Schools will be grandfathered in like they are in many NCAA rulings and this legislation will be reworded so that schools can not change their nickname to a Indian one and host tournaments.

You are right that UND can't just sit on it's butt and depend on FSU though.

For those of us who don't live in North Dakota, can we or should we still contact Pomeroy, Conrad, Dorgan or our representatives. It would seem to be more prudent to contact the ND representatives, but I don't know.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'd say contact your own reps. There's going to be a lot of support of the name sent to Dorgan, Pomeroy, Conrad...a few more people isn't going to hurt it. But if you get reps from outside of the states affected, it may have some more punch in congress and they may be able to do something about it. Especially considering there is a monopoly case going on right now about the NCAA.

  4. If i'm reading this article on ESPN right...it means UND can't use the Sioux name in the postseason and unless they change it, this will be one of the last year's they host any post-season event.

    UND got screwed

Nicknames or mascots deemed "hostile or abusive" would not be allowed by teams on their uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1
We'll see exactly what they call hostile or abusive.

"What each institution decides to do is really its own business"

That is the funniest quote ever. He says it's none of the NCAA's business, yet this comes right after they make a new rule putting these schools in a bad situation.

The NCAA plans to ban schools using Indian nicknames from hosting postseason events. Harrison said schools with such mascots that have already been selected as tournament sites would be asked to cover any offensive logos.

What are they gonna do at the Ralph next spring?

  5. this may have been answered already but are the 2003 sioux draft picks who have not signed yet eligable to be drafted today..and if so who are they?? thx

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

not sure if they are going to be put back into the draft...but if they were it would be chris porter, brady murray, and matt smaby.

  6. Very very soon. I watched a little bit they did on their news a couple weeks to go and they said within the next couple of weeks they would be making the switch.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

We should have it up within the next two weeks.

Also, here's a little tip for you. If you have an HDTV (Not just HD-ready) and you have the regular cable order, you can pick up those local HD channels for free. It's just a technical glitch, not some special offer.

Also, they have HD-DVD players with HD tuners in them. You can also get those local HD channels if you have the HD-DVD player hooked up to your tv and regular cable.

  7. I got a letter from Midco today saying they will be offering CSTV as well as three additional Fox Sports networks in Grand Forks starting August 18. The letter also said that a number of HD channels will also be offered including ESPN HDTV and Fox Sports.  Sweet!!!!!!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    Fargo cable sucks

  8. Not a obsession just a fact.  Actually Bison FB is the biggest whether dii or DI-AA.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That's pretty hilarious. How many people showed up for each Bison football game? Compare that with average attendance for Sioux games.

Of course the statistics would be skewed. I hear home playoff games brings more people. How has bison football done recently with attendance at home playoff games?

  9. Apparently the NHL wants to hold the draft on July 30th.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

We could potentially lose more players. I just read on Espn.com at http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2109696 that says

If a team fails to come to contract terms with any of its 2003 draft picks during the five-day window, those draftees will become eligible for selection in the 2005 entry draft scheduled for July 30 in Ottawa.

Included in those drafted that are/were Sioux players are:

    Zach Parise - signed (devils)

    Matt Smaby - unsigned (lightning)

Brady Murray - signed overseas (kings)

    Rylan Kaip - unsigned (atlanta)

    Chris Porter - unsigned (chicago)

There are a lot of good college players that were drafted in 03...included in those are:

    Mark Stuart

    Jeff Tambellini

    Patrick Eaves

    Matt Carle

    David Backes

    Jimmy Howard

    Danny Irmen

    Ryan Potulny

    Mike Vanelli

    Brett Sterling

    Gino Guyer

    Matt Zaba

I'm not sure about what happens to 2004 draft picks. Apparently that website says that Thursday July 28th is the "Deadline to make required bona fide offers to 2004 draft picks." I don't know what happens to those players who weren't given offers.

  10. I contribute Denver's Back-to-Back on "lucky goaltending."

    Nothing more.

Like most UND fans, I can't stand Denver. What do they have...2 fans? 3?

I think being an elite team constitutes having a chance to win the title each year. With such a huge gap in Denver's successful teams and championships, I'd hardly call them elite.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

If you're excluding Denver from being a top team, then I think you have to seriously look at UMN too. They've "only" got 5 championships, other than back to back it was twenty some years in between titles. Just recently they've had the kind of dominant team that you think is going to win every year. Sure with Woog behind the bench they had better finishes than Denver, but they never won anything.

  11. It is obvious you haven't heard anything I said since I signed up in this homo..geneous site. I think this school is a good school. Unfortunately its plagued with this name that it not theirs in the first place. Is that the solution then? Just go away? Wow, why didn't I think of that! Maybe we should have told the British that during the formation of this country. Maybe during the Civil war we should have told the blacks "if you don't like it, why don't you....well, that wouldn't have worked because they were slaves....", but you know, throughout history, there have been many wrongs that at the time didn't seem wrong. Geez, what's wrong with slaves? What's wrong with women not being able to vote? Why do those Indians think they have to be citizens of this country? All of these attitudes were felt by the majority of the YT's in this country back in the day, and after seeing the old KKK fart that just got sentenced on the news, I see that some people still feel that way about people with different skin color.

Again, who cares about Sioux Falls, they aren't making a mockery of our name. Besides, there are a heck of a lot more Lakota/Dakota in Sioux Falls than at UND. Geez, I wonder why.

And.....again, I do not go to school here for free....just another stereotype the majority have against the minority.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I always did think that UND having the Fighting Sioux nickname was the same as slavery. Thank's for finally pointing it out. You know what, you forgot to mention the Holocaust too in your argument. :silly:

  12. I think WDAZ's sports is about 2 minutes long each night. Another thing to point out, has anyone else noticed how low of quality the game footage is that is shot by WDAZ cameras. I'm talking about highlights from local basketball/hockey/football games. You turn it to KVLY and even Fox's sports, and their footage is a lot brighter, more colorful, and just a lot more eye friendly. Are they using cameras from the 1950's?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

WDAZ shoots on M2 film. There are less than 10 stations in the country who use m2. it's a very low quality of tape. kvly and kxjb currently shoot on dvc-pro which is digital. i don't know about fox sports, but i can say they most likely use dvc-pro. it's the highest quality tape on the market that most stations can afford. wday/wdaz can definitely afford to move up to dvc-pro, its just the matter of do you want to spend a ton of money to convert now, when you're going to have to convert to all-digital in a couple years.

it's not just wdaz that has cut it sports to 2 minutes. with sports center, the only sports information a majority of the world cares about is local stuff. it's kinda hard to find 5+ minutes of local stuff everyday to keep that time filled. high school, college and twins games are what you'll get at wdaz. if you want highlights from the nba finals, you'll go to espn, just like everyone else.

  13. This whole Maine-Sioux connection is really one of the best stories in college sports. Maine is a classy program and Sean Walsh was a wonderful young man who was called home far, far too early. It is heart-warming to read all the support Sioux fans have expressed over the years for the Black Bears, and vice versa. As soon as the last east coast team was eliminated from this year's tourney, the USCHO board lit up with a bunch of Maine fans loudly proclaiming their support for the Sioux in the Frozen Four.

Maine is top shelf stuff; unlike some of our WCHA co-horts.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The Native American tribute to Coach Walsh at the Ralph was one of the most moving experiences that I have ever seen. I believe that helped solidify the respect the two programs and fans have for each other. I personally support Maine over every other non-WCHA team and wholeheartedly supported them over the Gophers in the playoffs.

    They are a class act.

  14. Mory, sure he feels terrible about it, if you were out drunk driving and hit someone and paralyzed them you would probably feel terrible about that too, but there has to be punishment.

I for one do not believe that this hit should or will bring legal action, but a ONE GAME SUSPENSION by the league?  That's rediculous!  I didn't see Johnnie Cochran on the Denver coaches list!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

So be pissed off at the league. Don't come out and berate the player. Some seem to expect him to self-impose a rest of the season suspension.

  15. Bad choice, Mory00. Perhaps you missed the fact that some Sioux fans blasted me for writing a USCHO news article about Greene's DWI arrest. I suppose I could have adopted your approach and closed my eyes to the story because it didn't involve hockey.

And the information you posted as a quote from me came from my post on USCHO in which I criticized Greene for some of his illegal hits and The Ralph's big-screen glorification of his illegal hit on a SCSU player.

I'm not giving Greene a pass for his conduct off the ice, and I'm not making excuses for his play on the ice.

So thank you very much for proving my point.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Again, for the second time in this thread, you have said that I have an approach of closing "my eyes to the story because it didn't involve hockey." I never said we shouldn't or can't discuss off-ice issues, in fact I enjoy reading about off-ice issues of players. However, there are certain issues, like this one, that I don't feel should or need to be brought up.

The hit happened, I feel that Paukovich is sorry about it. He said in the Denver Post that he feels terrible about the situation. I was pissed off like no other when I saw the hit, but I'm not going to condemn the kid and bring up his past to try and prove some point.

I guess if some people feel that his sexual assault conviction has some sort of connection to the hit, then they can feel that way. However, along the same lines, they should relate Greene's DUI arrest to every bad penalty he takes, or every illegal hit he makes. It's a bit ridiculous the way some fans here screamed and yelled when Bina got hit and yet have no problem with some of the hits Sioux players make. (Not saying that to you PCM, I know you stance about Greene's hit and I agree with it) Had the SCSU player been knocked out or been out of the game, would Sioux fans have been making this big of an issue out of it? Or would they have said enough is enough like many DU fans have said.

Certainly Paukovich has been discussed over and over since the hit occured and while Robbie may never play hockey again, there has to be a time when we let it go. The hit happened, we can't change it. The kid apologized, said he felt terrible. He got suspended twice. I guess anything short of a lynching wouldn't be enough for some Sioux fans.

  16. All the information about Greene -- his many undisciplined penalties, the dangerous hit on the player from SCSU, reports from other hockey fans about his penchant for poor on-ice decisions AND the DUI arrest -- factor into judging his character. They are all part of who he is and what he's done. You can't separate them and pretend like they're disconnected.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'd imagine you were right there asking for Greene to be kicked off the team, right?

  17. Everyone to ever play hockey has it drilled into them that checking from behind is very dangerous and is known to cause serious injuries including paralysis. So the guy has no excuse for what he did and proving intent might be difficult, but anything short of him being retarded he knew what was likely to happen from a hit like that. I can stand people defending someone like this, try look at it from the perspective if someone did that to you or your child.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Try looking at it from the prespective as if your child was Paukovich. You don't think he feels terrible about it? You think people should go about the internet bringing up his history and condemning him for life?

  18. That is crazy talk, it's just more info proving the guy is a thug and probably should be locked up or at least booted out of college hockey.

Can he be charged for the hit on Bina, similar to the situation in the NHL with the punch to the back of the head? Also would Robbie have legal recourse against him for intentionally injuring him and effectively ended his career?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Good luck trying to prove intent to injure. Sure it was a dumb play, but seriously.

In 8th grade I got in a fight and punched a kid in the face. Then last year in intramural hockey, I slashed a guy and almost broke his wrist. The two must be connected and I must be a consistent threat to society.

  19. So anything a hockey player does off the ice is off limits? Tell it to Dany Heatly.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I never said that, but I don't think this conviction FROM 2 YEARS AGO has anything to do with his hit. I don't see the point in bringing this up other than to mock the kid and to try and prove some point that he is violent and cheap. However, there is no way I'm going be make the connection between a violent act of sexual assault and a violent hit on the ice.
