  1. Giants Ridge in Biwabik, MN is a nice place also. May not be on par with Lutsen, but it's got to be a close second as far as Minnesota ski areas go, plus it's closer (from the F-M area anyway).

Plus, you can visit the US Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth while you are there.

  2. I'm not necessarily going to complain about Kristo at this juncture, since it seems that every season we eventually reach a point where we start complaining about "one too many passes" leading to missed opportunities by the forwards. We may grow to appreciate his willingness to let it fly.

Exactly. Once he starts burying a few of them, I don't think too many people will have an issue anymore.

  3. I'm a little nervous for this series. The yellow rats are going to be well rested. They took last weekend off, and I heard they skipped the NCAAs last season to prepare for this weekend.

I heard some of their players are still tired from the World Juniors.

  4. I've been looking at different hotels that are close to the Xcel Energy Center and I have tried to reserve a room at a couple of hotels with no luck. Does everyone have their rooms booked already? I thought trying to book a room 6 months in advance was being proactive. :)

For the record, I tried the Holiday Inn Rivercentre and the Crown Plaza. Last year we stayed between Minneapolis and St Paul and rode buses to the games and I'd like to not do that this year. I'd rather be within walking distance.

The Holiday Inn Rivercentre has a special Final Five rate. You have to call them directly and talk to somebody in their sales department, but they make you prepay for the entire stay and it is nonrefundable.

We always stay at the Embassy Suites. They have a shuttle between the hotel and the XCEL Center. You should be able to book a room there online.

  5. I've got to back Brasco on this one. I don't believe he was advertising. He simply posted a link to the ebay auction so everybody could see the jersey he purchased. I would have probably done the same thing if I wanted to share that information with Sioux fans.

  6. 3. Who will play the point on the PP? This year it was Genoway, Marto, Miller and usually Martens. Two of those guys are gone for sure. Who can step into the other two or three spots? LaPoint and Blood both played there in juniors; maybe LaPoint will be ready at this level. Trupp seems to have the skillset. Another poster talked about Toews in that kind of a role. It's obviously crucial that these spots are filled effectively.

I see MacWilliam filling one of these spots. He currently plays the point on the PP in juniors, and the game I saw he looked pretty good there.

  7. do the guys no that? Did you see how dejected they were at the end?

I saw that. But Hakstol will get them straightened out during the intermission. I think we're gonna see the Sioux come out firing and put this thing away in a hurry!

Bob Norton already claimed UNH the winner.

  8. Here's Adam Wodon's bracket from CHN:

    Manchester

    1. Boston University (1) vs. 4. Ohio State (15)

    2. North Dakota (8) vs. 3. New Hampshire (10)

    Bridgeport

    1. Michigan (4) vs. 4. Air Force (14)

    2. Yale (5) vs. 3. Vermont (9)

    Grand Rapids

    1. Notre Dame (2) vs. 4. Bemidji State (16)

    2. Minnesota-Duluth (7) vs. 3. Cornell (11)

    Minneapolis

    1. Denver (3) vs. 4. Miami (13)

    2. Northeastern (6) vs. 3. Princeton (12)

  9. My guess if UMD wins:

    Northeast - Manchester

    1 - BU

    15 - OSU

    8 - UND

    10 - UNH

    Midwest - Grand Rapids

    2 - Notre Dame

    16 - BSU

    7 - UMD

    12 - Princeton

    West - Minneapolis

    3 - Denver

    13 - Miami

    6 - NE

    11 - Cornell

    East - Bridgeport

    4 - Michigan

    14 - AF

    5 - Yale

    9 - Vermont

I came up with the same bracket, except with Princeton and Cornell swapping places.

  10. Then cheer for Air Force tomorrow night. Or UMass-Lowell to pull off the upset. I believe wins by either of those teams will knock them out.

I take that back. Apparently the Northern Michigan & Alaska game will be a factor too. Minnesota is really hanging on by a string.

  11. #2 has signed....

    From hockeyfights.com

The Washington Capitals have signed free agent center Trevor Bruess to a two-year entry-level contract beginning in 2009-10, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. The Capitals expect Bruess to join the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) next week on an amateur tryout agreement.

Bruess (pronounced BRISS), 23, has spent the past three seasons with Minnesota State of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The 6'0", 200-pound Minneapolis native was an assistant captain for the Mavericks in 2008-09. He had 12 goals, 17 points and 117 penalty minutes in 35 games on the season, leading the team in penalty minutes and finishing tied for third in goals.

Bruess led Minnesota State in points (30) and assists (21) as a sophomore in 2007-08 in 38 games. His nine goals included a team-high three shorthanded goals, one power-play goal and one game-winner. He won the team's Hardest Worker Award for the second year in a row and led the team in plus/minus rating (+22). In three collegiate seasons Bruess posted 24 goals and 61 points in 110 games.

Bruess joins an organization that has seen five former college free agents contribute with the Capitals at the NHL level this season: Jay Beagle, Sean Collins, Graham Mink, Brian Pothier and David Steckel.

Maybe Big Joe will be able to have a conversation with him in training camp similar to Greene/Paukovich.
