  1. I could be wrong on this one, but I think Kessel has the best chance of having a Kariya-like freshman impact on NCAA hockey of anyone in the last decade.  Not Kariya points, as they are harder to come by these days, but that kind of domination.

He'll have to adjust to having less time and space than he is used to, especially on regulation rinks.  Also, for those who note his production against college teams this year, I will just say that playing in exhibitions, with backups in the lineup and an incomplete effort by college teams, will be different from playing against men determined to prevent goals, with all the sticks and elbows that will bring.

From a UND perspective, the timing could be better, as I wouldn't mind having Greene and Jones out to combat the boy.

His play in the WJC has me dreading the prospect of Kessel flying up the ice on a big rink.  If anyone can put the extra room to use, it will be him.

Here's the good part: whether he goes to Wisconsin or Minnesota, I don't see UND, CC, Denver or anyone else in the league giving him and his team a free pass.

(BTW, the adjustment to sticks and elbows that the boy will face will also be an issue for a young player like Toews.)

Hopefully if Greene stays he will give him a welcome to college hockey with one of his pancake body checks. Kessel will come flying up the ice with his head down and Greene will nail him. Welcome to the WCHA kid!

  2. Frankly, I took, am sick of the Kessel hype.  Ain't gonna give it any more lip service.  Let's read the newspapers, and ignore the kid, except to ride him ruthlessly when he is in the WCHA.  Remember how we used to chide Gopher fans for being obsessed with Parise.  Let's not return the bad habit with Kessel.

    Can anyone say Dave Spehar???

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

This kid is going to be a dominant player right away, I was really hoping he would not choose the Goofers. They already had a very good recruiting class before Kessel if this is true. I can't believe the BADgers could not land this kid, he will take some heat when the Goofs play in Madison next year.

  3. Has narrowed his decision between Minnesota and Wiscsonsin, his decision will come in the next two days.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I don't like either team but I hope he goes to Wisky, otherwise the Goofs are going to be a dominant team next year that will be a National championship favorite from the get go. He will be a impact player immediately.

  4. I agree with the lack of sportsmanship shown by McMurchy. Not only did he skate around the whole time the Sioux were being announced, but then when he did go to the blue line he turned his back on the players and faced the other way while they were announcing the last Sioux player. And then on Saturday he started to skate off while the flag was still present. What part of "please stay standing until the colors are retired" didn't he understand. It's one thing to disrespect the opponent (even though I'm sure the Sioux don't do that in Wisonsin) but it's another to disrespect your country and flag.

What an embarrassment he is to his teammates, coaches, fans and all of Madison.

And just because I chanted this all weekend and can't get it out of my head "Hit Robbie Earl" "Hit Robbie Earl"

    GO SIOUX

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

MacMurchy is a Canadian so it is not his country and flag, still a bush league move though. I hate the BADgers almost as much as the Goofers.

  5. A win by the Sioux tomorrow brings the Pairwise comparison with Wisconsin into shouting distance, AND every win vs a TUC this time of year puts the Sioux in good shape for making the Final 16.

Will see what kind of legacy these guys want to leave ....

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Hopefully the senior class has realized it's now or never. This team has the talent, you can see it in spurts throughout the year. No senior class wants to go out as underachievers. As of now this class has one lousy NCAA win against Holy Cross in their careers. That is not the way to be remembered. Granted they won a MCNaughton Cup which is a great achievement but it would be great to see this team make a run for Columbus. The talent is there to do it, it is just a matter of getting er done!

  6. Hopefully Kaip can make a full comeback from his concussion next year and be a valuable member of the team. Radke will be depended on next year on d and that is why I think it is strange that he rides the pine consistently. My only conclusion is that he just does not look good in practice unless there is something off the ice....classroom etc??

  7. Interesting of note: I think the top players recently have been Greene, Jones, Zajac, FABIAN, Porter, Spirko, and JORDAN PARISE. Notice the two I capitalized. One is a sometime warrior, the other is a much maligned goaltender.

I think Zajac and Spirko have been the two freshmen with the most impact. I think Radke has been the most underutilized (recently despite good play they've been finding every excuse it seems not to play him). Biggest disappointment has to be Kaip. No, not for his play. but because he played so well while he was healthy and then lost the season to injury.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I disagree that Kaip has been the most disappointing freshman regardless of injury. In my opinion there is no doubt it is Radke. The coaches just must have no confidence in him if Marvin is playing over him in the biggest game of the year to date today. The way it sounded when we recruited him he was going to be a regular in the line up and make an impact as a freshman. In the games I have seen Radke play he just does not look comfortable out there. If Greene leaves to the AHL after the season Smaby will be our only defenseman with any experience besides maybe Bina and that is scary since Smaby has been shaky much of his time at UND. We will be strong at forward next year but very inexperienced at d next year. I do not feel that Kaip played that well while he was healthy either, he was OK but 4 assists in 20 some games is not exactly tearing it up for a player described by Blais as "like McMahon but with a better scoring touch"

  8. If most of the rest of the team had played as well as Sparky has this year we would be in the top 3. He has been a good player as a freshman. He will be a four year player and should have a real good four years when all is said and done. When Murray comes back I am for putting him on the second line with Genoway and McMahon and keeping Zajac, Stafford and Sparky on the first line. Murray on the second line will balance out those lines. I thought the 4th line played well today also.

  9. Overall, the Sioux played a pretty good game. We seemed to be moving the feet more than in previous games. We were on our heels some in the third period as Wisky got hungry for the tying goal. Hopefully this performance can be duplcated tomorrow as Swenney said we have not swept a home series since November. Hopefully Murray will be back next weekend and we can play with a full line-up before heading into the WCHA playoffs. We will be playing the Dogz the only question is where. It will be a dog fight that is for sure. Maybe this team has finally discovered a sense of urgency, we will find out more on that after tomorrow's game.

  10. WTF?!?!?!

Did they bring him back too early, or what?  I don't remember hearing anything during the UAA broadcasts.

I wonder if he is out for just the Wisco series, or if he will be back for the SCSU series.

This is insane the amount of games that Brady has missed this season due to injury. :silly:

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

This is pretty much par for the course, this just has not been a good year and I don't see much changing at this point.

  11. Never heard Zach Jones as being a top 10 pick. Never heard him being projected

in the first round period. A nice mention.

However, no mention of Toews. Is this because it's slanted as the top American prospect compared to Europeans? I heard Toews was supposed to compete for a top 5 draft position.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

In the central scouting mid-season ranking of North American skaters Jones was way down in the lower half of the list. He has no chance of being a first rounder. There will be no draft this year anyway.

  12. This team deserves criticism...they are underachieving big time. Hak is not getting the job done, plain and simple. In the business of sports whether at the college or pro level the coach is the first to go. I think Hak got the job just because his wife is O'keefe's daughter and that is a bunch of BS. There should have been a national search and we should have brought somone in here who has some head coaching experience rather than a green head coach who is trying to learn on the job.

  13. And before all you blowhards start pissing and moaning, SCSU couldn't beat an egg right now!

I don't care who or what SCSU did to CC! I'm guaranteeing right now we sweep SCSU. As PCM is dreading, UW series will be rough, but I'll be damned if we'll give a single point to SCSU!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That is laughable that you would say you guarantee we will sweep the Hussies....Please what do you base your opinion on? This team has lost 6 out of the last seven league games and you are guaranteeing a sweep of the Hussies...please............

  14. Typical Hak excuses in the postgame comments with Hennesy. "Alaska is a good team" blah blah blah.....This team will have a hell of a time making the NCAA tournament. This team is just not getting it done. Hak sounds like he is in la la land in the postgame. He may be a decent coach in time but he is not ready for this.

  15. Lets pullout a sweep tonight and get some momentum for next weekend against those dirty BADgers. We owe them big time, hopefully there will be some real energy in the building next weekend, afternoon start times are a bummer though. Sparky is very quietly putting together a very good freshman season. I never thought he would have more points than Zajac at this point of the season.

  16. The Sioux would then win the tiebreaker. 16 wins for UND to 15 for MN & WI.

Wow, 3rd place without having to play the play-in game at the Final Five. All of the sudden things appear much clearer now that I've donned my rose colored glasses.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Please....let's not get ahead of ourselves. With the track record of the team so far this year we will be lucky to get 2 points at UAA. They know how to frusturate an opponent and score opportunistic goals. Finishing third at this point would require a small miracle. It is now or never for this group of seniors and this team....no more excuses, time to salvage the season and make a run.

  17. I watched the entire game, very entertaining game. Canada took the lead 4-0 in the first. It was a whole different game after that, the Planet USA team really had the upper hand the last 2 periods. Parise and Bochenski were on a line together for most of the game with Dustin Brown on the other wing. I believe Brown was on the world junior team that won gold. That line was very good in the 2nd and 3rd period. They created some good scoring chances and more than held their own. Bo will score some goals in the NHL, he looked very good to me and looks like he has improved his skating even from last year. Roche played for the Canadian team though an all star game is probably not the best forum for a defenseman to shine, though I saw he did jump into the play a few times.

  18. This is a great outlet to follow the Sioux, I would be lost without it. Thanks to those who make it happen, it is much appreciated. In reading POI there were a few that really annoyed me, however it was a good resource to follow college hockey and the WCHA.

  19. Nice research....we really did lose a lot.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Despite the losses this team has underachieved this year. There is no question about that. Most of the seniors on this team peaked in their sophmore year (Schneider and Massen) especially. Genoway and maybe McMahon are the only players that have shown improvement from year to year. The loss of Blais was the biggest blow to this team, there is leadership missing and it starts at the top. Hakstol has been average at best in his role this year. I will reserve judgement on him this year however since he is new at the job and may take more than one year to get fully acclimated.
