Of course thats the issue. But hey while the horse may be dead theres no reason not to keep beating it.

I wonder if on that flight if there were any coach seats that were available? Who booked his flight? Dont schools have a travel coordinator like many businesses?

    Just wondering.

a lot of the discussion has centered around whether Business Class is appropriate or not and that isn't the issue.   Just trying to get it back to some kind of reasonable discussion and not get sidetracked with 'elitist' talk.

  2. Flying Business Class is not the issue here and I have done it many times but that met with the rules my company has in place.

The fact that the rules governing Bresciani's travel stated that he was to fly coach unless approved by a President.  It sounds like he 'approved' the upgrade in travel for himself which is shady at best.

I'm calling BS on all the holier-than-thou, hypocritical bitching.

Who hasn't treated themselves better while traveling for work? Do you stay at the same level of hotel as you would traveling leisurely? I doubt it -- I sure as hell wouldn't be paying $300 a night for a room at a deluxe conference hotel while on vacation with the family. I'm willing to bet their were budget accommodations within walking distance of that last meeting you attended at the Grand Hyatt Regency, too.

How about meals? Do you spend your entire per diem, or pocket the difference? Ever given any of it back to your employer? Are you eating fast food, or hitting up the hotel cafe and fancy steakhouses with colleagues? How often do you take the wife and kids to Ruth's Chris?

Business travel drives an entire segment of the service industry, and the economy at large. The reason is simple...human beings tend to act differently while spending other people's money. If you think otherwise, you're either a saint, or delusional.

So Bresciani flew business class half way around the world. BFD. It's the overreaction that's truly embarrassing. Fire him, prosecute him, or STFU.

I am not in a position to fire him or prosecute him and I really don't plan to STFU.  Nice mature reply, by the way. Maybe it is time to start ignoring the noise inside your head.

I have traveled all over the world for business.  We have rules on what class of ticket is acceptable based on distance and we aren't able to approve our own expenses or upgrades for that matter.  Do you think he would have done it if he knew he was going to get caught approving his own upgrade?   I highly doubt it.

I have stayed in the same hotel on business and personal travel.  We don't have per diem but get reimbursed for actual expenses.  All of those receipts are reviewed by our immediate supervisors and we don't approve our own spending.

  4. He played the system and didn't think it would get noticed.  Integrity is how you act when nobody is watching and he didn't think anybody was watching.  I doubt he would have flown Business Class if he knew others would find out.

The rule was that he needed approval from the President so he approved it for himself.  I'm sure he realized that he was complying with the "letter of the law" but it doesn't pass the smell test.  As the Chancellor said it was technically legal but an embarrassment.

    1. For international travel:  If flight time approximates five or more consecutive hours from the United States port to the overseas port, a "less-than-first class" (e.g. business class) ticket may be purchased.

I am not going to look up a ton of schools, I don't have time for it. But glancing at google Kent State has a similar policy, some like the U of MN you need approval from somebody higher up and of course multiple schools are like NDSU where the president approves it. That said, it is an "embarrassment" according to the chancellor to travel in this manner, so I kind of doubt the new policy will allow it all.

My company sends a lot of people to Europe and Asia every week.($2B in sales/year)  Essentially our policy is domestic is coach,  Europe is Economy Comfort (coach +), anything to Asia (over 8 hours) is OK'd for business class.

This might come off as sounding bad but so be it.  I for one am very happy the staff didn't set foot in Arizona or California this year.  Those two states have been an unparalled disaster for us in recruiting, with Arizona being by far the worst.  Not sure one kid has ever panned out from that state.  Plus, some of the softest kids we have ever had have come from there.  I know there is talent in those states but we sure never got it.

95% of the class from the upper midwest is the way to go.

The only one I remember from AZ was Peters. He wasn't an all American but played a fair amount and seemed to work hard.

A lot of Indian, Chinese, and Arab students in the US with STEM backgrounds get green cards.   Microsoft and Google have a major influence on our immigration policies.

Used to joke back when Iran overthrew the Shah that all the Iranian engineering students would find jobs in the Iranian nuclear arms program.

That is not my experience in the Twin Cities. I work for a large engineering company and we stopped sponsoring non-US citizens for positions about 15 years ago.  After 2-3 years their H-1B visas expire and they have a hard time staying in the US.  It is a lot of work to justify keeping them in the US and quite often it is denied.

Prior to signing them up for an interview we ask - "do you have an unrestricted right to work in the US long term?".  If the answer is no we tell them we have chosen to not sponsor foreign nationals for work visas at this time.

The Gophers have recruited out of state illiterate, or low literacy, athletes since I have been married (mostly football and basketball). I know very few quality high school athletes who aspire to go there. When one does, it is like BIG news.  I really feel bad for what has become of mostly football and hockey.  The Golden Gophers were quality athletes you could teach your sons to look up to.  Now they can not talk a complete sentence when interviewed on TV. Several years ago I thought,  "My education dollars are paying for scholarships for these young men?"  When we came to recruiting weekend at UND we were told on Tues. and Thurs. football practice was in the library until mid-terms came out. If you were 3.0 or above, you went to the outdoor field to practice.

Again, all of my children could have gone to UND and I would have been a happy mama.

I know a friend who is pretty high up in UM athletic dept. he said Brewster was getting football players in with ACT scores of 10 and 11.  Most all of his highly rated recruits were out of school within a year or two.

  9. I don't know his story but it's too bad he can't stick it out for 3 years and get a degree that would open a lot of doors for future.   Maybe play some football at the next level too.

Zero scholarships in the traditional sense.  Money is packaged as financial aid and grants.  I think it's some of both (financial needs and academic).  I'll let someone else chime in that will know more.

My experience with D-III schools is that there is extra money for kids they really want.  They package it as financial aid but more of it seems to find its way to the top athletes.

UND needs O linemen.  And an all star QB.  Just sayin...

Just adding that Joe Shobert ended up being an FBS all American this year.  He had agreed to walk on at UND at one point. Not making any statement on what we need.

Oh it's true.  After that UND did everything in its power to see that NDSU would fail in their transition.  (not playing in any sport was one)  When NDSU was successful in DI the jealousy at UND prompted their move, but the die was cast and GT was never going to give UND a break.  Call it what you want but that's what went down.

Not trying to fan the flames but I am not aware how UND did everything in its power to see that NDSU would fail other than not playing them.  Do you have other examples?

You're arbitrarily defining what letting it go means to make UND come out as the good guy.

The discussion appears to be about letting go of the bad blood because of the refusal to schedule the other team when the needed games. One team is holding onto that and is unwilling to to schedule a home and home.  The other agreed to travel twice in an effort to get the games started again.  Seems pretty straight forward to me.

Weber scheduled us when we needed a game. UND didnt. Cant use the scholarships as an excuse because they wouldnt of had any material effect for at least 2 years.

The bottom line is it ate your lunch with NDSU scheduling everyone but you. Gene Taylor stuck it to you. Thats where your angst come from and I understand that. As they say turn about is fair play.  But its time to let it go dont you think?

Letting it go would mean being willing to schedule a regular home and home.  One team is willing to do that and the other won't let it go, as you say.

I don't really care if we play or not but to say UND is not willing to let it go is bass ackwards.

Ok, lets clear up a few things here.

First of all, there have been some comments on here that kind of lump all NDSU fans into one group. There are plenty of Bison fans that would like to see this rivalry played every year, regardless of where it is played. Then there are plenty of fans, who think their team is God's gift to football.

Yes, they played Weber, and yes, I said there were exceptions to the scheduling of difficult teams. But given where the programs have been over recent years, there isn't a ton for NDSU to gain from putting that on the schedule. Revenue, yes; and I'm not saying that they're reasons were great, but it is certainly understandable. Was there bitterness between the schools ... of course, and I think Brad's article this past fall pointed out that there was plenty of blame to go around.

Comparing basketball to football is a little ridiculous given the number of games that are played. Any to be fair that is a game that has been scheduled back and forth.

I guess what I was saying, it back in the day we could have scheduled NDSU; but we didn't have to, so we didn't. Now, NDSU does not have to schedule UND, so they haven't (at least not on a regular basis. We scheduled UNI back then ..... they schedule Weber and Incarnate Word now.

Ultimately, trying to place 100% of the blame on NDSU is about as ignorant as trying to place 100% of the blame on UND.

Let's clear another thing up.  Here is what we were reacting to.  His statement was that NDSU would have scheduled UND for a home and home if the dates worked out. To which I said BS - there were plenty of times the dates would have lined up for a home and home over the years.  Nothing more...nothing less.

    Per Tjamz -

For the record, I've been in favor of never playing UND again unless it's in the playoffs.  I really don't think it is good for either school as it brings out the worst in most fans.  As for why we did with Weber, we had an opening in our schedule last season and this season.  Weber was one of a few schools that we could do a home and home with in those years that had the right dates open.  I'm fairly certain that IF those dates were open at both UND & NDSU we may have seen a home and home scenario play out there as well.  The stars didn't align so it didn't happen.

The only way I want to renew this "rivalry" is if you join our conference.

I'm calling BS on the home and home. There were multiple options to schedule a home and home and NDSU wouldn't do it.  NDSU wouldn't even play a home and home with UND with the games being 4 years apart.

As far as bringing out the the worst in fans - my son was at the game as a UND student and one obnoxious fan yelled a few things early in the game.  The SU fans around them told him to shut up as did the security guard and it ended.  No issues that I am aware of.
