UND's week 1 opponent, Stony Brook University, recently added an FBS transfer offensive lineman from the University of Maryland: http://www.csnmidatlantic.com/maryland-terps/former-maryland-ol-transfers-fcs-school-can-play-immediately

That week 1 battle will be a physical one. Great test to see just how physical the Hawks are going to be in 2016. It all starts up front with UND's tremendous d-line depth.

    Go UND!

Booked airline tix last night to NY for the Stony Brook game.  Excited for the year to start.

SFI just reported that Grady will be coming back (presumably)as well.  Great news.

Also, they talk about Gordon maybe lining up on special teams. Love that idea.  He's very quick laterally and built to be both power and speed.  I would like to see him on punt and kickoff returns.

I saw Gordon play a couple of times in HS and really liked the way he plays.  He should be very successful at UND.

Here is Dubays follow up post. Crack must really screw with ones head.

I knew my post about North Dakota hockey would bring out the hatred from the fan base but I defy any fan to dispute the facts presented in the post. Obviously I editorialized when I called them thugs and a disgrace but everything i backed it up with is factual and unimpeachable. It amazes me that the fan base will forever deny something that everyone indside college hockey has acknowledged for years. North Dakota plays a style of hockey that goes over the line more than any t...eam in the game. But as I also mentioned, year in year out they are absolutely loaded with talent and an elite program by every measure. To be honest, I'm not sure why the fans bristles the way they do when this topic comes up. Again, read the post from yesterday and find a factual misrepresentation. There are none. Embrace what you are, an elite program that plays an in your face style that at times goes much farther than the college game should. Still don't believe me? Hakstol really did send a thug onto the ice in the closing seconds to pound on an opponent. That story is true and it's a disgrace at the college level.

I am really surprised that UND hockey makes it into the top 200-300 things that Dubay has to worry about.  His plate is pretty full.

Ausmus on Schmaltz goal: "I was just happy that I wouldn't receive any death threats for that goal I scored on our own net."

Now without hearing it you can't be 100% but I think he was jokingly serious. I don't doubt he would receive some if they lost, and may have already even though they won. It's a scary world we live in now.

as rough as that was it looked like DU taps the puck in the net on the weak side if he lets it get through.

Disagree with plenty in this opinion column.  First, Minnesota had no choice so Gopher fans should not blame the AD for the move to the BTHC.  Conference bylaws state that if 6 schools field a sport that the conference can sponsor the sport.  When PSU started hockey they needed a conference and the BTHC provided that conference.  What were the other 5 schools supposed to do?  Tell PSU to go pound sand?  The BIG schools are linked together in so many other ways both athletically and academically that you can't tell a conference member to pound sand over hockey.  No, the other Big Ten Hockey fans don't like it and didn't like to lose the WCHA and the CCHA but that's a sacrifice you have to make for the greater good when you are a part of the Big Ten conference.

The writer also waxes poetically about the WCHA but fails to mention that half the old WCHA (Michigan, MSU, Wisco, Minn, and ND) make up the BTHC (the other half makes up the NCHC now).  The WCHA was great, in the 2000's, with the WCHA Final Five and some of the epic games between the Gophers and the Sioux.  That was the pinnacle, the rest of its history is not as glamorous.  Really, SCSU and Mankato were not greatly accepted in the beginning.  Little brother tag alongs that would take players from the U.  Now Gopher fans are crying about losing games against those schools.  Don't know why since Goldy is like 1 for the last 20 against in-state schools.  The U still plays those schools in non-conference games and has the North Star Cup series so it's not like they never play anymore.

You know what sucks about the formation of the BTHC?  No more of the Sioux vs Gophers fighting for the WCHA title.  That's about the only thing that sucks.  Everything else is just piling on and whining.  Wisco, scUM, and MSU are historic programs, ND is no slouch, and PSU and OSU are gaining ground.  Give the BTHC schools some time to rebuild their programs, have a few nasty episodes on the ice that breeds some contempt, and the conference will take off soon enough.  Same thing for the NCHC, once the schools become all-too-familiar with each other the rivalries will blossom.

It's just time to get over it and embrace the change as the WCHA is not coming back.

The problem for  MN in the BTHC is that the schools are so far from Minneapolis that that you get very few visiting fans at the games.  Wisconsin is the only school within driving distance.  With few visiting fans it is harder to build hockey rivalries and fill up the arena.  Mariucci used to see a lot of UND, SCSU and UMD fans for those series.  They don't get that now and Notre Dame won't help with that.

Just remember that some posters expect UND to be mentioned in every show, whether it's in Fargo or Minneapolis.  If they're talking about college sports in the region, they have to mention UND or else it's a failure on UND's part to get exposure.

The first statement from the Gopher fan was -  "You have to remember that no one in MN would want to listen to that."

The response was that there are a lot of hockey fans in general and Sioux fans in particular in MN that would have interest in that.  I don't expect every show to talk about UND but to say that nobody would be interested isn't true and that is what we were reacting to.

What did you expect from a MN radio station, an hour long praise of UND? You have to remember that no one in MN would want to listen to that.

You are wrong. There are a ton of UND grads and UND hockey supporters in the TC including me.  Not all of those fans that show up for games in the TC come from GF.

I listened for a while today but turned it off.

They avoid most things that are positive about UND.  Check the Trib when NHL'ers are mentioned.  If it is a former gopher they print that.  If it is a former UND player they write about their HS affiliation or say nothing

  8. In my opinion the U of M doesn't really have a campus atmosphere like most other colleges and I think that hurts them with some recruits.  It is almost like a collection of buildings in an office park.

It isn't completely dependent on size.  Other big schools like Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Michigan State have campuses with more of a 'college' feel to them.

I held off on this comment a bit.... but on Tuesday there was "extra conditioning" taking place among the WR corps, everyone that is except for the two alleged offenders. They got to stand in the middle and watch -- Basic Training style.  Bubba and Coach Freund got this.

I remember hearing of something like this years ago where a basketball coach did the same thing.  He upped it one more level and gave the offender a chair and a cold Coke-cola to drink while his teammates ran.

Minnesota has 2 seniors and neither of them see any ice time. One is the third string goalie who was brought in as more of a practice goalie and never had a chance at being a legitimate starter and the other one just doesn't play. UND's seniors are arguably some of their most important players, and yes that is a problem with Minnesota. UND is lead by their older players and Boeser, who appears to have a Hobey in his future at this rate. Say what you want, but he's a massive difference maker for UND as a freshman and it's been a huge boost to them. Minnesota, obviously, doesn't have freshman anywhere near that caliber. They might have a player like that in Casey Mittelstadt in a couple years and Scott Reedy is looking decent as well that year, but to have a guy like Boeser isn't normal. It's starting to look like, at least right now, that he may have been a steal for the Canucks at 23rd in the draft.

If this was the first time I had heard the excuse that MN is young and has a lot of freshman I could agree with you.  I have been in the Twin Cities for over 30 years now and this line of thinking is pretty constant.  You would think that MN is the only team that has players leave early and they always have way more freshmen than anybody else.

  11. The football players at the bb games has been a great start for student support.  It would be great if they could find a way to include more of the student body with what they are doing so the students feel part of it and have some kind of bond with the fb players.  I think something grass roots like that could carry over to fb games and other sports as well.   Maybe through Nodak Nation.

I know the whole FB team was encouraged to go to a recent men's basketball game. The guys decided to have some fun with it and came in Hawaiian shirts and brought a lot of energy. Love to see that!

I was at the basketball game last Saturday and it was jersey day for the football team.  Everything from Brazil soccer to Cal Ripkin Jr complete with baseball pants, eye black and a baseball glove.
