  1. I just booked a flight this morning.  I could have flown out of GFK for $1,098 round trip on Delta.  I instead chose to leave from FAR for $388 on American.  I feel like it is worth the extra 10 minutes or so it takes me to get to Hector from where I live.

  2. Mayor Bochenski spoke briefly about the air service issue on KNOX radio the other day.  He said a "study" is in and that Delta's route between GFK & MSP is the third most expensive route in Delta's system.  They have spoken with Delta about that and indicated that Delta is going to "help them out on that".

He also mentioned several times the appeal of a Denver connection, and kind of made it seem like they are still actively trying to make that happen again.

  3. There was once an article in the GF Herald a few years ago about Denver Air Connection possibly adding a route from GFK.  They apparently have agreements where you can book flights with them through either United or American.  I'm not sure if that's more realistic or not versus getting one of the mainline carriers to add a route, but is a potential option.

The Allegiant flights can work nicely from GFK if I am heading to one of those destinations.  But if I need to get somewhere on one of the mainline carriers I don't even bother checking GFK anymore because I know the Delta flights out of Fargo are going to be cheaper with better connections.  On top of that, I rarely fly Delta because I find American & United are almost always cheaper.

I often feel GFK would be far better off with a "mainline" carrier serving either DEN,DFW, or ORD and then getting a "boutique" carrier to run the daily MSP route.

  4. Viewpoint: With Grand Forks airline service, is it the chicken or the egg?

    Quote

Which comes first, the chicken or the egg? The same question can be asked as to what comes first: Economic development or airline service? This question has been answered time and time again, yet Mayor Bochenski and Keith Lund think that somehow, they can rewrite the facts that say airline service follows economic development. Airline service does not create economic development.

  5. I have read that Jamestown & Devils Lake have the flights they do because of the Essential Air Service program.  In fact, that is the same program that funded United the last time they did serve GFK about 10 years ago or so.  GFK lost the EAS grant and JMS & DVL was awarded it.

According to recent Jamestown Sun articles, United (or their subsidiary) appears to be trying to pull out of both airports but the government won't let them while the subsidy is still in place.

But I agree, it is somewhat bewildering that GFK apparently can't get just one daily flight to Denver when some of those other airports can.  I had no idea until searching yesterday that Minot has such better air service than GFK.  That really kind of surprises me.

    They're not wrong.

I do understand that.  And like I said, I try to use GFK when the flights are competitive.  As mostly a leisure traveler, who lives on the fringe of the "catchment area" for both GFK and FAR, I personally am willing to pay modestly more to use GFK simply because I prefer most ANYTHING in GF over Fargo.  But not 50-70% more. which is often the case when perusing the options offered by Delta out of GFK.

I don't blame any business for sending their employees an hour south to FAR when you consider the cost savings.

The 40% drop in passenger traffic at GFK in 10 years is jarring.

  7. Air Service Expansion Committee to Grand Forks businesses: Please fly local

    Quote

The committee will seek commitments from local organizations to fly out of Grand Forks International Airport. It's just one part of the committee's work to expand and improve local flight services.

I know there are quite a few UND alums in the know about the aviation industry, and I'm curious about overall thoughts as to the GFK airport service.

Does this committee actually do anything other than ask GF area businesses to increase their own costs by committing to "flying local" out of kindness?

Are there any realistic prospects for expanding service at GFK?  Seems like there are just 3 Delta flights daily now, and some haphazard Allegiant service to Vegas, Mesa, and Orlando.

I only fly 4-6 times in a year.  On the major carriers, it's often nearly half the cost from FAR, with far better connection options.  Obviously because there is much more competition.  On Allegiant, it is usually cheaper out of GFK, with far fewer flights, which makes me think service from Allegiant at GFK could be in a precarious position, although most every Allegiant flight I have ever been on out of there is mostly full.

I live about the same distance from FAR and GFK.  If I'm flying Allegiant, I generally find myself using GFK.  It's been 7 years since I took a Delta flight out of there.  It is just too cost prohibitive.  I'd rather use GFK whenever possible, just because I am a "Grand Forks Guy".

I don't know much of anything about the inner workings of airlines or airport operations, but thinking outside the box, would GFK be better served if American or United were the "main" service provider for GFK with flight connections in Chicago?  And then replace the Delta flights to MSP with one or two daily flights by a "boutique" carrier? Thinking something like the service that Denver Air Connection provides between Thief River Falls and MSP.  Would that satisfy the travel needs of area businesses that need to get employees to and from the Twin Cities regularly?

In my opinion, it is unlikely that GFK can support a second major airline with a western route like the article suggests.  That has been tried and failed multiple times I believe.  Just curious what others with more insight on the industry thinks.

I do grow tired of the annual "Use it or lose it" warning that this committee seems to issue via the Herald every year.

  8. I realize the the offense was putrid against USD, they scored 3 points.  The Yotes D was impressive and harrassed Schuster all game.  Our D was solid in that they only gave up 14 points.  North Dakota should be able to win going away when our D only gives up 14 points.

Having said that, the UND defense seems to me to be so poor situationally.  When it is 3rd and forever, it is almost a given that the opponent is going to convert.  UND must be one of the worst tackling teams in FCS.  It would be interesting to see how Pro Football Focus ranks North Dakota's tackling.........

  9. Unfortunately, I'm afraid it's unlikely that GFK will ever land a second large carrier unless there are significant subsidies involved.  I only fly about 5 times a year and live about 100 miles from both GFK and FAR.  I stopped even checking Delta fares from GFK a few years back.  From Fargo, Delta fares usually seem to be the most expensive compared to all the other options at Hector.  Then there seems to be another $100 or so premium on GFK Delta flights compared to Fargo.

I feel like a Denver route would make sense in theory, but United was here a decade ago and it apparently wasn't used enough.  Perhaps a Chicago route or even DFW via American would be utilized more from GFK?

I've also heard more than once from Grand Forkers that drive from Grand Forks to Devils Lake to fly, because it is cheaper than Delta GFK flights.

If I fly Allegiant, I do try to use GFK whenever possible, because I'd hate to lose that service, especially the Florida flight........

  10. When I was younger, I loved the double-header days.  Now I'm middle-aged, and it gets to be a long day so I will most likely have my hockey tix for those Saturdays for sale.  Well, maybe not the Wisconsin game because I miss seeing them on the schedule.

And the old guy in me appreciates the 6:00 pm hockey games on Saturdays now.

  11. Inopportune timing for this, which means most likely promote from within.  Not sure that's ideal, defense has been underwhelming for quite a while.  Would like to see someone brought in that will abandon the 3-4.  Schwenzfier won't be doing that...........

  12. I actually think Sather's scheme and coaching is better than Jones was.  He just doesn't get the same talent that Jones did, and the high talent that he has had on the roster he hasn't been able to keep.

I think those teams in the Great West and early Big Sky years (Huff, Webb, Anderson, Hooker) would have been outstanding if they would have had a competent "in-game" coach.  Jones just threw great talent on the floor, told them to play one-on-one and hoped for the best.

I think you need to add the FCS caveat because there are elite 3-4s in the FBS

I assumed at the FCS level would be obvious.  We are ways off from catching Georgia and Alabama.

I figure anywhere between 6-5 and 8-3.  I think 4-7 is really unlikely, and folks predicting that are still stinging from the way the last two games of the season went.  Don't blame any of you for that though.  MVFC isn't as tough as many like to proclaim.  We've proven that already with Top 3 finishes in two of first three years since joining.  I expect another Top 3 or 4 finish.

Obviously unlikely to beat NDSU, but wouldn't be shocked given it is in the Alerus.  UNI and ISUr should both be winnable, but more likely a split and probably lose the one on the road.

  15. My apologies to Bill Chaves.

This is really weak by the FCS Selection committee.

The process needs an overhaul, at minimum the top 16 need to be seeded with 9-16 getting to host the first round.

Agreed. Get it out in the open.
Maybe it didn't happen, but I find it a bit odd that UND's AD went on the radio this morning and say he thinks it did. That is a pretty bold thing to throw out there on a hunch given that the committee is made up of his peers.

Is it that bold though?  This guy has failed twice now to secure a home game playoff game, again against schools that draw significantly less attendance wise.  I remember the theory that the Southland subsidized Nichols bid.  Was that ever proven or just pure conjecture?  Asking because I really don't know or remember.

Now Chaves is offering up a theory that our bid was higher than Weber's but it was ignored due to "other criteria".  Hammersmith posted what "other criteria" would likely be, things like an unsafe environment or inadequate facilities.  Don't think the Alerus falls into those categories.

Perhaps you are right, my guess is we will never know the truth, my first thought is that Chaves dropped the ball on this.  Again........
