I'm not advocating for UND to pull a Petrino, but they truly need to utilize the portal in several areas and HIT on their offers if they want to rebuild this defense by next year. Probably not going to be a top D nationally but need to be more competent than we were this year to give us a chance. I just hope they are taking it seriously rather than rolling with what we have, especially with our front 7.

I could see the secondary improving, though I think a lot of this is scheme as much as skill. Interested to see how Dixon fits into the mix. and if Bishop could step up and take some reps. Would rather see these guys play more man than zone.

    Safety ... any help available???

UND was in man a lot.  At least on one side over 60% of the time.   If you want to help the secondary. It starts up front with a pass rush.  Our pass rush was ok when we were ahead and they could T off. It was not the rest of the time.

Last week they tailgates next to the champions club tent.  Not sure if every game.

They have been in the same spot since at least Hunter Pinke’s freshman year.  Right behind Champions Club.

Maag never played for Rudolph's offense.  Maag has had a cast leading into the Nebraska game.  Did you see the TD Maag caught against UNI.  His day is coming again.

Maag’s freshman year was Rudy’s last.  Danny was WR Coach

  4. Some of you know, through happenstance on  their official visits, I got to know several families in this years senior class fairly well.

Through a lack of communication, both spouses of one of the families bought significant extra tickets to this game and asked me to share:

9 on the visitor 50 (image). 2 on the home 50.  They are listed on TM but if anyone is interested they would like $25 no fees to get them used and people to the game.  Message me and I can give you a contact number.

If that's the case then Tom Miller should do his job.

Completely different.  Having the facts to print a story, and doing a background check as a University are two completely different things. Seriously

  6. Food for thought from 247 sports.

The Transfer Portal has 112 Wide Receivers committed to another school already.  (about the top 25 guys are lateral or up to power 5 after that mostly down a step or 2)

There are 136 Wide Receivers still in the portal - Not counting FCS guys (which 247 doesn't generally track anymore) (They will track an FBS transfer to FCS or vise versa)

Randomly looking at schools.  Utah State is listed as a destination for 3 Jackson State and Louisiana Monroe for 4.   All of those schools have starters on the roster, recruits coming in, and now the transfers.  Is the grass greener?  Out of those 11 guys you have to figure at least 5 don't improve their playing time??   Now thinking of FCS guys transferring up..... lots of guys who have already played some or a lot, know what college football is, can assimilate to a new team, have some talent so the FBS coach picks them up - but do they play? or do they provide depth.  Is being the number 3 guy at UND worse than being the #3 or #4 guy at San Diego State (insert school here)? I  may argue that a back up LB, Corner, S, etc  could get more playing time at UND than on a new team.

I don't remember Tommy calling an audible all season.  If you remember a specific instance, let me know and i will re watch.

Freund gives Tommy an RPO on a lot of plays.  (3rd and short and 3rd and long probably not)  His cadence or one word when its loud tells the Oline run or pass.   If you re watch you will see that on the road when its loud our WRs run more routes on run plays than at home, because if they don't hear it, they have go with the pass option.  South Dakota and MSU come to mind as examples.

Question is if our defensive players were so good that these guys weren’t starting this year and still we’re good enough to play FBS , or were they buried on the depth chart because we had too much loyalty to the 6th year seniors? That Covid year may not have been as helpful as we thought……

Is UND’s defense better than NIU?

They become "depth" players for FBS schools.....  A kid with a couple years or more experience is better than many PWOs or freshman scholarship guys.  Maag, Siegel, Larson, others could all go FBS - but actually "playing" is the questions.  Do you want to add "depth" to a team or start and play?   Look at how many guys transferred to an FBS last year just to sit watch.   There is no guarantee either Sam or Quinn will play - hopefully they do.

He got a PWO offer last night, but that doesn't mean he's committed there quite yet.  That may be his ultimate goal, even if it means less playing time.

And he did have a PWO from the Gophers before coming to UND.

And not to forget,  many PWOs at power 5 schools never suit up for a game.   There are the exceptions........

Weah- if you look at his social media you can see what his attitude is……me, me, me. Maybe he is leaving because he sees less playing time in his future with a stacked backfield. Ziebarth and Smith make weah leaving much more tolerable and these guys are as good in different ways. I do see him leaving as a lack of character because of all the work UND put into him to help get him where he is at. He needs a slice of humble pie and maybe he can get that going to Minnesota. A team will have to consider his baggage; ball security, catching the ball (better in 2021), potential legal issues, potential work ethic issues, etc…… How far does Weah want to move from his home?

I do see Nelson and Robertson leaving because of Dixon coming in. We will gladly take them back if Dixon goes elsewhere. Dixon is coming to UND because of his playing time prospects and because of our top defensive play. He could go to a better team but have the potential to sit longer. I would love to see any of our transfers play FBS but are they good enough to get a scholarship offer?

Guys that didn’t play much are not transferring because of Bubba and the coaching staff. They want to play! Most end up transferring down but some do transfers laterally or up so anything can happen.

Starters that leave want bigger and better things. They want to play in the top FBS league to prove themselves or they want to transfer to a winning program that has the potential to contend for championships if they are stuck at a school they don’t see getting there. I would say not many starters leave just because they don’t get along with the coaching staff or don’t respect them.

Nelson and Urweiler open late old teammates months ago they were leaving to go back home and to hopefully play with their brother. Nelson did not leave because of Dixon.  Lenny is gone, home is California

Unfortunately UND put a lot of time and energy into Otis but I think his "people" were convinced he needed to play at an FBS to get to the next level.

Only caught a bit this morning but one thing that stuck out in some of the individual drills, and I'm not positive I saw it correctly, but it sure looked like Vaughn-Jones was really showing his motor practicing his edge rush. Since he's listed as a DB, I could be wrong, but it's possible they are giving him some reps at OLB which would be interesting with his speed.

He played in that position late in several of the spring games

  12. Did anyone notice:

All of the Red Shirt upperclassman were reclassified to a straight class.  I.E:  Maag and Waletzko are true seniors (played as a freshman)  Kauppinen, Jalen Johnson, Siegel, Odom (all same Class) were Rs Sophomores last year - are now listed as Juniors instead of Rs Juniors.  Same with the class below.  This would then account for their Covid year that didn't count and will have the option to be 5th year seniors (when in reality it will be their 6th year in the program)

  13. Not sure how many of you watched the JMU / VMI game.  VMI stacked the box.  JMU took deep shots on 1st play, 4th play, 1st play of second series then 3 more before the 8 minute mark of 2nd quarter.  2 complete, 1 dropped, 1 prob should have caught, 2 over throws.  Threw it wether the coverage was there or not and splt between the outside recievers and slot recievers.   Hit 2 or 3 more throughout the game.  Mostly from unpressured pocket, but Johnson drops them over the receivers head quite nicely.

  14. I came across this link on several player's social media pages from  Small School Prospect Scouting.   I apologize, there was no easy way to do this.   There is obviously a glaring omission of Weah on the Walter Payton award when we know others have him there.  Something interesting:  All the categories had players spread out from across the country except Defensive Back - Their winner was from Austin Peay, but all 4 runner ups were MVFC guys.  Scrutinize, ponder, complain and comment at will    Thought it was worth sharing.

Is there any mention anywhere when or if Bubba and the team knew he was transferring? Since we haven't been playing, he could've let them know awhile ago and is just releasing it. Or maybe it's mutual? Either way, he was fun to watch, but next man up. Let's finally get that monkey off our backs and get a W Saturday.

The school has to enter his name in the portal within 48 hours of the written request.

    Yikes

Welcome the NEW "No Penalty" Transfer Portal Era:  Nothing but commitment to the program keeping guys from leaving.  Anyone who doesn't have it will be tough to keep.   Any starters, Maag, Weah, Waletzko, Siegel, Larson etc ...  can choose to leave in the next several years.    Apparently to transfer to FBS a player has to be transferred by the first week of May to the new school.

  17. SDSU: 170 yards passing 1st quarter - 202 for half.  (75 on the one over Fort) 107 yards in second half - 46 on 2nd play of 3rd quarter.  Coverage tightened but  Pass rush also improved as game wore on....two totally different units but they work in tandem when defending shot plays.
