Danny could have taken over after the 2025 season, no need to wait until 2027. Or even someone else other than Danny.

Sure Bubba will get us our 6-7 wins and there is no guarantee what the next coach will do. But I'd rather risk seeing what someone else can do....even if it means the new guy sucks and is canned after 3 years. I'd rather risk it for the chance the new coach could be better and make us a contender. It's been 10 freaking years of mediocrity.....now we have to sit on our hands and watch another 4 years of the same predictable thing......F that.

Ok the funny part about my comment above is me saying a UND coach would get canned after 3 years. We know that would never happen...unless he went 0-11 for three straight years.

Yep, the SU's will win another 4 titles and we will be fighting for our 7 wins...

  2. In light of the events since the last game(1 and done playoff appearance)...

    2024 North Dakota Football Schedule
Aug. 31            at Iowa State - LOSS
Sept. 7            vs. Montana - LOSS
Sept. 14          vs. Idaho State- TOSS UP
    Sept. 21          vs. San Diego-WIN
    Sept. 28          vs. Murray State*-WIN

Oct. 5               at North Dakota State*-LOSS
    Oct. 12             BYE
Oct. 19            vs. Northern Iowa*- TOSS UP
Oct. 26             at Youngstown State* - LOSS
Nov. 2              at Indiana State*-TOSS UP
Nov. 9              vs. South Dakota State*- LOSS
Nov. 16            vs. South Dakota* - TOSS UP

Nov. 23            at Illinois State* - LOSS

We have 5 all but guaranteed LOSSES, 1 probable LOSS(MONTANA), 2 all but guaranteed WINS and 3 TOSS UPS.

Lose at home vs UNI and we could lose the last 7 games of the season.

Best case is 7-5 and a playoff berth, worst case is 2-10.

Would make a bet we have no more than 7 wins and at least 5 losses.

  3. On one hand I can't believe the extension...on the other hand, it should have been expected by all of us...

Looks like the standard for UND football is 5-7 wins a season...

For all the UND FB apologists here...does the last 10 years not account for anything

    It's a rhetorical question.

If you respond you've outed yourself.

Exactly the reason coaches are bailing.  Program has been in slow decline for a couple years.

Bubba is a good man but not a great coach. UND / Chaves hung on too long. The central themes on this board, although farfetched, misinformed, and laughable at times, are usually overall spot-on given the passion and love for UND. Bubba has been strung out way too damn long, should’ve been fired in 2017, 2018, or 2021, but now, here we are: this is the result.

Agree 100%.  Good man, average football coach which is proven with a look at his record.  A good coach would have won 50% more games at North Dakota over Bubbas tenure, but moved on after 5-7 years.  A great coach would have won 85-90% of his games at UND and been gone in 2-4 years.

  6. WTF is going on?  Can you imagine being an offensive player for UND tonight?

Bubba is too good of a man to have it end like this.  Something is really wrong.

In the span of 4 month, we went from hanging 49 on the Bison to having nobody want to be responsible for the offense under Bubba.

Not downplaying his success because it speaks for itself but I'd be curious where his offenses at SIU actually ranked. I think they were above average but they won 5, 4, 6 and 7 games those 4 years. Beyond those few years, at the time his only other college experience was at the NAIA level where recruiting and requirements for players was completely different than D1 NCAA (and he obviously was very successful). It wasn't like it was a glaring mistake at the time.

Very easy to look back and make the obvious comment that UND made a mistake. Happy for him as by all accounts he's a legitimately good guy. But looking back 10 years isn't going to move the program forward today.

My comments were aimed more at Bubba and the present staus of the football program than about Deboer.  With the correct man in the saddle, UND would instantly be a consistent seed at the FCS level.

Wat does Bubba need to do to get extended and keep is job?  Where is the bar he must reach?

    -  Beat the Jacks or Bison

    -  Winning season

    -  Make the playoffs

    -  Win a playoff game

    -  Reach the Quarterfinals

    -  Reach the Semifinals

    -  Make it to Frisco

    -  Win a National Championship

I would say win 9 regular season games, first round playoff bye, win a minimum of 1 playoff game.  What he has done over the last 10 years, an average coach could do at an FCS program like UND.

If you’re curious how a DeBoer tenure would have looked like at UND, you should take a look at what Troy Taylor’s tenure at Sacramento State looked like. That’s the best comparison in my opinion.

DeBoer wouldn’t have been here for a decade, but he would have taken a struggling program and quickly built one of the best FCS teams in the country.

A coach like Deboer would have taken any three teams Bubba had, won a minimum of 9 games and as many as 15 all three years, and had a resume to move to a substantial FBS program.  Same players.

This program is lost.  It can’t help but win 5 -7 games….but that’s all it does.

A great way to put it.  Almost doesn't matter what the schedule is.  We will win most games at the Alerus, lose most games away from the Alerus and if we have enough home games to make the playoffs we lose the first playoff game.

I still say this program has never recovered from the NDSU loss in 2021.  The overall trend line has been down ever since that game(of course with the exception of the mirage game against NDSU in 2023).

I heard it was because DeBoer is not good at “the Griddy”…

I don't see the gulf between SDSU and UND being as wide as it is between Minnesota and Ohio State/Michigan. UND seems to be stifled by the antiquated thinking of the old guard and a reluctance to court the Gen Xers/Millennials as alums/potential donors/coaches/fans, etc. I believe I even read a few pages back someone intimate UND should have never left DII. WHAT???

UND has the facilities, the donors, and as I drive down Columbia, I can't think of too many mid-majors that have anything broaching what UND will have for football. There's a little brother/loser mentality here that Grand Forks and UND needs to shake, but believe me, you've got a sleeping giant at the FCS level. One guy in the big chair can make that happen inside of 2 years.

Great post.  We are very close and for that the credit goes to Bubba.  The problem is the culture and for that the credit also goes to Bubba, one guy in the big chair could make it happen fast.

Unproven at QB this year, with a new coordinator......run the ball, field position, while playing good defense should work right?

It could.  I am basing my assessment on the last 10 years body of work, this seasons schedule and the fact the offense will likely be less productive this season.  There is always a chance it is better, but that chance is remote IMO.  D could be better, but we will still have the head scratching in game calls, time management and a game or two where Bubba's pregame speech seems to demotivate.  The trend line for this program has been down since the 2021 loss to NDSU at home.  Yes we eat NDSU last season, but that looks now more of an aberration than anything else.

    2024 Season:

Assuming Tommy is QB, Coordinators are the same and Bubba is the head coach...

    2024 North Dakota Football Schedule
Aug. 31            at Iowa State -L
    Sept. 7            vs. Montana-TOSS UP
Sept. 14          vs. Idaho State-TOSS UP
    Sept. 21          vs. San Diego-W
    Sept. 28          vs. Murray State*-W

Oct. 5               at North Dakota State*-L
    Oct. 12             BYE
    Oct. 19            vs. Northern Iowa*-W
    Oct. 26             at Youngstown State*-L
Nov. 2              at Indiana State*-TOSS UP
Nov. 9              vs. South Dakota State*-L
Nov. 16            vs. South Dakota*-TOSS UP

    Nov. 23            at Illinois State*-L

    3 WINS

    4 TOSS UPS

    5 LOSSES

Split the toss ups and we finish with 5 wins and 7 losses...

After the transfer portal and Danny news, I would change Montana to a Loss and Northern Iowa to a Toss Up.

    2 WINS

    4 TOSS UPS

     6 LOSSES

Thankfully San Diego and Murray State come in the first half of the season or it could really snowball.

a .500 record will be tough to accomplish.  Would not be surprised to see a defection or two yet before next fall...

Want better attendance and more interest in UND FB.....produce a better product. It's been groundhogs day for a decade.

Been 5-7 wins all but 2 years...one 8 win season followed by a 3 win season...

At a school like UND, that record is not good enough.

So when it comes to evaluating the talents of Tommy S. and Danny F.  the experts on this site are better at it than Michigan State and SDSU. Got it. This site has been destroyed by never-ending, unregulated trolls. It used to be home for fan discussions, now it's home to never ending fan arguments.

Danny and Tommy….what was their W-L record?  I forget.

I was thinking that exact thing.

  18. Bubba swan song this fall.  Not going to be good.  Unless possibly Pawlak has the ability to handle it.  Danny got out while the getting was still good.

They have won 2 road playoff games this year.. I think the Montana state game already qualifies as a win against a high caliber playoff team. Their path was no gift in my book..

can say a lot of crap about the bison but they sure turned their year around after the und game

100% correct.  The Bison were destroyed in GF and here they are a game away from Frisco.  Have to respect that.  Based on the rest of the season one would think the score in Gf would have been reversed...the Bison got coached up and got far better and the Hawks floundered the rest of the season and managed to find their comfort zone once again.
