SUU, Big Sky discussing membership - thespectrum.com

Quote

Ed Grom, commissioner of the Great West, said that if SUU leaves with Cal Poly and UC Davis the conference would help North Dakota and South Dakota find new conferences to play football.

So we got that goin' for us, which is nice.

So if the Southland loses Texas St. and UTSA to the WAC, do they make a play for Oral Roberts?

star2city posted this yesterday...if you read their comments it seems fairly obvious that they want out of the Summit.

It would be interesting to know whether their administration shares these feelings. You'd think they could have made that move years ago if they wanted, but perhaps the religious affiliation issue prevented it. Of course, some things which may have seemed like deal-breakers in the past may be more easily overlooked now given the current climate of conference instability.

All this makes me wonder if Monday's site visit by the Summit isn't going to go something like this ...

UND: So Mr. Douple, do you have a solution, not a idea, but a solution for our football concerns?
Summit D: Well, we're talking with the MVFC ...
<cutting off Summit D>

UND: Yes, but you have no authority. Have they actually acknowledged your concerns and engaged you on the issue?
Summit D: But your nickname ...
<cutting off Summit D again>

UND: Do you have a football solution for us, here, now, ... today.
Summit D: Uh, well, we could call Patty Viv...
<cutting off Summit D again>

UND: Brian, call Doug. Tell him "we're all in" but make sure to get the Montana and Montana State riders into our agreement. ... And thanks for stopping by Tom. Have a nice flight out.

Why don't you start a campaign with Drake fans and their President suggesting that very idea? :silly:

That arrangement wouldn't exactly pass muster with the NCAA.

The MVC could offer USD a schedule a scheduling agreement to circumvent the conference membership issue. USD wouldn't be a member of the conference, or be part of the standings, and wouldn't be eligible for the autobid and wouldn't have any say or recourse in conference proceedings. It would also limit scheduling flexibility for the other schools.

Unless the MVFC has a scholarship minimum on the books, Drake could be added as is. They were competitive enough to beat Illinois State a few seasons ago - they'd be at least as good as Indiana State.

And unless you can show that such an arrangement would not be allowed by the NCAA - I'll just assuming you pulled that out of your rear and have nothing to back it up.

Alternate reality 2:

BF: So Mr. Douple, do you have a solution, not a idea, but a solution for our football concerns?
TD: I've been engaging Patty V for months on the issue. The MVFC presidents are interested in adding the Dakota flagship U's, great academic institutions, commitment to winning - facilities, budgets, coaching salaries, fan support, etc. - and most importantly the very marketable rivalries with the Dakota flagship SU's. Timing is the only issue - as always. If you're prepared to be a businessman about this and recognize the pot of gold that awaits your institution if you can just find the patience to wait for the correct timing...you will be a MVFC member. That much I can guarantee you. I can also guarantee you that the WAC is going to give their best pitch to Montana and Montana SU - does UND really want to commit long term to a loser conference like the Big Sky would be without those two?

If you're BF, you have to listen to it and consider the options.

Thanks for clarifying that the ORU fans want ORU out of the Summit League. This correction has given me new perspective and removes all doubt that I may have had about the future stability of the Summit League.

Thank you.

An NDSU fan now preaching patience and timing to UND after UND (and the NCC) asked for exactly that about a decade ago.

This stuff just writes itself.

Hey Sic, I don't think it's been proven he's a Bison fan other than his user name, outside of that you got nothing. :D As I said earlier, this is interesting to watch and for anyone to tell UND or USD to sit back and have patience is beyond nuts but then again look who said it. As for the NCC stuff, well you just believe what you want to and I'll do the same but it was pretty clear how some NCC schools felt about DI at the time, funny how things have changed..... ;)

So Awesome!
A big thanks to Brian Faison, Robert Kelley & the rest of the UND staff for making this happen.
This must mean the Yotes are coming w/ us... Congrats to USD as well. (If this all plays out as it should ;) )
Can't wait to hear the official announcement.
