EMU cutting programs

EMU cut its softball, wrestling, women's tennis and men's swimming and diving programs on Tuesday. Next came the question: Why not cut football?

Pretty simple, blunt answer:

Quote

"Football is not being cut," Wetherbee said in a news conference inside the Convocation Center. "No. 1, because I had a directive from our board of regents and the president, and we all agree we want to stay in the Mid-American Conference and we want to be a FBS Division I football team.

"It wasn't even an option to look at that."

Before this week's cuts EMU sponsored 21 sports. They cut 4. Anyone else heard those numbers before?

But here's the biggest "ouch" at EMU:

Quote

According to 2015 NCAA financial disclosure forms, EMU subsidized 80 percent of its athletics budget, or around $27 million of the $33.9 million it spent in 2014-15 -- the highest percentage of any school in the MAC.

The article is a good, and fairly short, read.

The main reason that EMU's name is recognizable is FBS.  They would have to drop the sport to get any savings, because at FCS would lose more money.  Dropping FBS would mean getting thrown out of the MAC and losing out on conference payouts.

UND is strangely at the same sports make after cutting more than twice what was needed.

What are we doing wrong in America where we have become a country where there Is no money for things. When you see the cities in the Far East you can see the pride they have. There cities are stunning to look at.

No money for roads water pensions bridges sports.

China hasn’t moved democratically one iota except allowing two children before forced abortions.  Still have slave labor, still monitor all their citizens on the internet much worse than Facebook, still are militaristic, and have two classes of citizens as the poor peasants and their descendants can’t get a moving permit.  It has taken facism one step further with the communists benefitting most.  But guess that’s what you want with more government control.

There's more than China in the Far East. Would you take your money to China to employ slave labor and enrich the Communist Party. Thousands do.

The answer to this question would stray into politics.  I leave you with a link that I sent my left-leaning sister prior to the 2016 election and leave it at that.....https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2016/08/it_wont_end_well_for_global_elites.html

Good article, thanks. The comment about football can be applied to 80% of all colleges (FBS, FCS, and downward) but right or wrong it is always a sacred cow.

I still say the NCAA system of "thoust shalt sponsor N sports to play at level X, or M to play at level Y, or < yadda yadda >" is a big part of the problem.

Those additional sports aren't loss leaders (meaning there to get you in and then get your money); they are dead-red ink.
