Downtown Grand Forks

So downtown has the late night bar scene cornered on Friday and Saturday nights (during the school year).....don't see alot of bikes that time of night and people aren't walking from campus to get there......so why the need for more bike Lanes and bumpouts?  But I'll give you standing at any downtown bar and counting people during an entire week.  Then I'll stand outside BWW that same week and see which place does more business.  Not saying downtown shouldn't exist, but it also shouldn't get a disproportionate amount of the resources since a week involves more than just a couple hours two nights a week.

Not sure about your hang up with bikes?  Having an area that is unfriendly to walking and bikes, then saying only a few people are walking or biking there, doesn't do much to project how it would be used once it becomes more accommodating to the activity.  If anything, the fact anyone is on a bike in downtown, in it's current condition, would be a good indicator that it would be used a lot more.  There's a trail along the greenway, sure, but try riding a block or 2 away from it.  Scary.

Grand Forks Public Schools overspent by $2 million this year.

and will be another million short next year if something doesn't change (time to increase property taxes)!

Heard a quote today, "Grand Forks is like a shack with a dirt floor who talks about getting a hot tub."

Wreck your car on the roads in Grand Forks getting to an underfunded school system, while the city leaders are busy extending curbs downtown, trying to build a new library, a million dollar light project, and kissing more of the governors butt with downtown vibrancy initiatives:

Quote

Grand Forks planning officials are weighing changes to local law that would simplify adding mural art to buildings. The move is consistent with a years-long effort toward building "vibrancy," be it through a hipper downtown or more large-scale public art.

The cynical part of me believes that this is a setup for the new School Superintendent.  There are some easy cuts and he will be a hero to everybody soon after he starts his job.

Will he get Central into the WAC or MWC?

My hunch is that he’ll ask you and bison51and jacksfan, and then go trolling and to a sausage festival together.

..........(time to increase property taxes)!

I didn't realize it when I posted it, but I guess the city council is already in talks about increasing property taxes.

Quote

"We, of course, have a new sales tax, but none of that can be used for general fund spending," said City Council President Dana Sande, referring to a half-penny sales tax bump that will be used for street and water projects. "All of that spending is going to go into infrastructure, which is good—we need it—but we still have a tight budget when it comes to general fund spending."

Quote

"We're either going to look at the services we provide, or we may need to increase the mills," Sande said. "That's why we're going to start looking at the services we provide sooner."

Quote

City Council member Bret Weber was one of the loudest advocates for honoring the fully salary plan, which would have meant a larger set of funds to distribute among employees—and he had hoped to pay for it with a millage increase.

In one of your older posts you said Sales Tax will eventually be a lot higher like 10%. We should look hard at a national sales to fund our country. The top rates  especially corporate will continue to be cut because there will always be that country that will lower tax rates that make our rates uncompetitive. Since 1980 what tax rates have gone up and what rates have gone done. Tells the story. Property taxes will eventually have to go up because the States the Feds and keep saying there's no money. How much can a city cut. OK cut 5% this year fine how many times can you cut 5%.  If the cost of doing business like the cost of cement keep going up how do you pay your bills.

Ive always wondered if the city would ever re-do the charter and go to a Full time mayor position and eliminate the need for a manager and "government relations officer". Boom just saved the city 200k

I still wonder the same, I've been in many discussions for a full timer.

You don't want a politician as the manager.

You talking about Kennedy?

University president is largely a figurehead position in today's world of higher ed. And he was hired for the job, not elected.

Then that would be you as the crazy, you stated the U Pres is largely a figure head. Therefore with your line of thinking, I stated that the Powers would had to have used the 2 presidents for their cuts.
