Submitting new stories and New UND Hockey Blogs

Sorry about that, I'm making some back end changes to improve security which sometimes breaks things. I catch most of them, but be sure to point anything out that stops working. The newsfeed is fixed.

I submitted but it hasn't been added.

I added it and this is the response that I got. The submitted feed is already in our database. Thanks for the suggestion!

Goon shouldn't your new blog be labeled Sin Bin and not Goon's World? It might confuse people.

Jim Cberkas is right, the new blog is actually the SIN BIN.

This is what I get when I suggested it.

Can we get this added please?

Jim I have tried to add this blog to the list as well with no avail. Can we add this? http://thehockeywriters.com/author/eburton/

It's college hockey and mostly UND and NCHC.

Sorry, that's definitely one of my more neglected projects.

I think the confusion is that the site looks more like it wants to be a news site than a blog. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be a link that leads to a specific blog of yours, instead the link is a feed of the articles by a particular author (you). The feed didn't appear to be a blog and doesn't have a blog title, so never got spidered.

Restated, I think of the stuff on that site as news articles (and they're often posted here as such), in contrast to  Goon's World which is treated as a blog. That's consistent with how other authors/sites are treated (gfherald articles go in news, but schlossman's blog goes in blogs). Perhaps the distinction is becoming antiquated, but for now there is one.

Jim, please restore spam filters to allow new news only.

Sincerely,

Everybody.

Yeah, using the GF Herald feeds clearly stopped working some time ago, they're just too unreliable now.

I feel like the news section in general would work if it were more used, because if enough people actively participated it would essentially crowd source the most relevant contemporary articles. But instead, it's now just 80% the automated feeds, which as noted don't work particularly well.

Either remedying that or dropping that section is definitely on my lengthy to-do list.

Remedying it would be awesome. You have stories from a month ago popping back up.

Not sure if you can tell, but how many people actually use the front page?  I very rarely, if ever do.  Most stories of importance make it into the forums one way or another.

A fair number. But I agree that aggregating news articles is not worth it. When I created that section, no one used modern social media. My goal was to have it be a news aggregator like reddit (which also wasn't yet popular) so people who wanted to see more than just the GF Herald stories could see it all in one place. Now, no one is lacking for news sources and I think people are much more interested in reading social media commentary about an event than all 6 different newspaper articles about it.

I'll probably pivot this site mostly toward the unique UND-specific content (forum and blog), while spinning out the generic hockey stuff (e.g. rankings), and also include a bit of additional social media (as opposed to traditional news sources).

Again, since it's 80% dependent on automated feeds (e.g. from GF Herald and UND athletics site), any problems with those feeds (such as misdated old stories) also show up directly on that news section.

I had originally hoped that crowd-sourcing news articles would work, but the section doesn't get enough traffic/submissions for that. So, it really became very dependent on the automated feeds. Though it gets some traffic, I also personally don't think it's worth putting in a huge effort to find articles daily and manually populate it as I had done its first couple years.

As described in the post above, since it's far less necessary since the rise of social media to spread news links and it never really took off (at least from a crowd submission standpoint) it will probably just go away eventually.

It's a good way to promote articles.

Is there a reason Brad's blog is no longer showing on the homepage?  I figured it was because he didn't have any recent updates, but he had one today, and it's still just Goon's stuff.

The "RSS feed" from Brad's blog seems to be down (if you click the "RSS Entries" link in the lower right, it never quite loads anything useful).
