Fargo the new Detroit??

I'm sure I'm forgetting something. But in the last couple months, two armed robberies of gas stations. One person murdered. One person assaulted/attempted abduction.

And a stabbing downtown today!

Fargo does indeed seem to be getting dangerous.

I hope the crime centers on downtown towards the southside. The northside has been very quiet, and I would like to keep it that way.

Ditto. A year or two ago several cars about a block away from me up by the BSA got their tires slashed... But that's not the end of the world

Northside is normally quiet, with all the action (businesses, traffic, etc) centered on downtown and the southside. The airport and the university is the only action on the northside.

Couldn't figure out what the trigger was for this.

Found it: http://www.inforum.com/content/stabbing-reported-downtown-hotel

Seven convenience store robberies in Fargo last year? Sorry, that sounds low.

As far as oil being the cause in Fargo? No. It's the explosive growth that city has seen. And their law enforcement is just not able to handle it all.

Get west of Highway 281 (and definitely west of Highway 83) its the oil side effect. I spend enough time out there and it's drastic how some areas have changed.

Growth certainly has something to do with it but I believe the boom is also responsible.  It's bringing in people who are looking to make an easy, fast buck. There's a lot of money to be made in the oil fields but it's hard work.  A certain faction is coming into the state to get their hands on some of that money without having to do honest work for it. Just my opinion....

I live in Fargo...know some guys up the chain in the FPD and we have had general conversations on crime here. To claim "new Detroit" is a huge stretch. As Sic indicated Fargo isn't Williston and the police force is probably understaffed for the population. Fargo isn't getting a lot of the unsavory "get rich quick" people like out west. Per my conversation with some in the know a lot of the issues crime wise can be traced back to LSS of ND and MN and the influx of people brought to this region a few years ago. Lots is ethnic diversity in the metro FM area now and all cultures, including white guys like me, are to blame for what you read from a far.

When we first moved to south Fargo in '98 the FPD held a neighborhood block party to inform all of us the area just a few blocks south of us was one of the high incident crime areas: violence, theft and drugs...it was a "community" of people not originally from this area.

Spot on.  LSS needs to be held accountable.

WTF is happening to Fargo to North Dakota!!  This is frikkin' North Dakota, a place I chose to raise my family, away from my family in Chicago because it was a safe community. Is it the oil boom, what???

If you left Chicago because it wasn't safe, why are you comparing Fargo to Detroit?  Shouldn't your thread title be "Fargo the new Chicago??"    ;)

LSS is only doing what any "non-profit" would do: play the system to make a buck. The laws are set up that LSS makes a nice "handle" on each "new American" they bring in. Want to solve the deeper problem? Get rid of the system that makes it worth it to LSS to do what they do. Talk to your legislator and get the system fixed to where we deal with the problems of the people here already before we bring more troubled folks in.

How do I know LSS has too sweet of a gig going? They're putting up this new facility on some of the most expensive land in Fargo.

It's not just Fargo, Saint Cloud (140 miles to the east) is averaging a couple of shootings a week - most are associated with gang and drug activity. Yes they have a bus pipeline from Chicago and a very active placement program for immigrants (not saying either are related - just saying).

Last night at 5 pm my oldest daughter, 14, and I went to Courts Plus to shoot some hoops and work on a few basketball things.  By 6:15 pm we were the ONLY white people on one of the courts and were pretty much asked to get out of the way and leave................

Haha I was thinking the same thing.  Seven robberies?  There were probably seven robberies in Detroit yesterday.

I moved to Sioux Falls about a year ago and I noticed a much higher population of people than I expected that are new to the United States.  I didn't know why but it always seemed strange that so many people would pick Sioux Falls as a place to move.  I don't know that you could find a place with more differences than the Ivory Coast and Sioux Falls.

Because the business owners in Sioux Falls, Fargo, and some extent Grand Forks lobby for a supply of cheap labor.  Chamber of Commerce wants the cheap labor here, but won't do anything else to help the immigrants.  LSS is good at getting them here, but that's about the extent of their help too.

I just looked into it a little and it appears Sioux Falls has the same LSS epidemic as Fargo does.  It's unfortunate that they don't have more responsiblity to the people they bring in.  If they did you might see people that have managed to assimilate a little better at the very least.

That is the key...............I see people here in Fargo daily that have been here for a decade plus and they still speak no English and have made zero effort to assimulate.
