Oh, that's it? They should have a team in no time.

They better have an extra $2 million to throw into a incinerator each year for women’s hockey.

They'll just double their rowing team or whatever the Michigans do.

Not going to happen very soon, but this sure seems like it is the best prospect the B1G has for an eight hockey team.

My concern here as a UND fan, if Illinois joins, is the B1Gmh just going to get stronger and stronger.

There has been chatter that Johns Hopkins will move it M&W lax teams to the ACC.  Women’s lax is cheaper than WIH, and if the B1G needs a team, the Illini could oblige.  Lax has been made an Illinois HS sport and there is many more girls playing it than WIH.

Illinois has not committed to add women’s ice hockey if they add men’s.  The new private arena, with at least two sheets of ice, would house volleyball games, M&W gymnastics, wrestling, and men’s ice hockey and an attached new hotel and convention center, so downtown Champaign could really get a boost.

Here’s an interesting article on Penn St hockey and why it makes money.

Penn State men's basketball would be a giant cash-dog if it wasn't for TV revenue.  PSU winter sports fans were looking for an alternative to going to men's b-ball games.

Yes...because brand new teams always become instant successes. Like ASU.

imagine how much better we could recruit if we dumped and cut the less profitable sports that never have a chance at at a title... like football.... and get the hockey coaches a G6.

Blue Chippahs.... as far as the eye can see.

The time to drop FB would have been at the beginning of our Division I transition. Now that we have built an IPF big enough for FB, it doesn't make much sense. We have little choice but to make FCS football a winner at UND.

Why is it everyone makes a big deal about the B1G getting 3 teams this years to the Frozen Four. When the NCHC has made the Frozen Four every year in the same time that the B1G has been around and Winning the National Title 3 straight times.

Looks like the there will be a 5th NCAA feasibility study here soon. Oakland and Illinois are done with their feasibility studies, and the two schools that are doing the feasibility study confidentially will be completed shortly.

The Oakland interim AD makes it sound that they are looking into making NCAA D1 hockey a reality.

And for mid-major schools like Oakland, creating adequate revenue requires strategic, innovative thinking. “We don’t want to hinder funding from our other sports,” says Padraic McMeel, interim athletics director at Oakland University. “We think hockey can be a revenue generator for us, and we try to be innovators in how we utilize our funding.… It’s about finding the best people to get the most out of our resources.”

“[The study] found that the addition of hockey would be beneficial to our portfolio,” says McMeel. “So now we need to work on next steps.… We certainly need a facility, which our president would like to see on campus.”

Jim Knowlton is the new AD at Cal. With his strong hockey background, we should probably keep an eye open for @collegehockey in Berkeley.

I wouldn't look much into this, but who knows in a 3 to 5 years.

California can't even afford to pay attention lol. Would be cool if it happened though!

Think both those schools could have strong programs.  Green Bey, Milwaukee, Toledo, Syracuse and Buffalo are near no brainers too, but AD’s value mbb so much.

Cal has a lot of athletic debt because they had to do major structural earthquake-proof improvements to their fb stadium that cost a fortune.  Think Cal, Wash St and Oregon St are the least likely PAC12 hockey schools.

That comes from the federal government, Montana State gets money for this all the time.

Cal has spent $440 million improving fb facilities which lie right on top of a fault line.  And after these articles, athletics were forced major funding cuts.

Could see Stanford fielding a team here is a new 4500 seat arena generations before Cal:

They'll get stronger because schools like that become adept at doing one thing great -- Cheat!   Seriously, that is why I really don't care for teams like Cal and other schools starting up college hockey programs.  Don't want it to become like football and basketball where if you aint cheating you aint trying.   College hockey isn't perfect, but they are saints compared to those other sports.

You make a good point.  I do wonder though if college hockey would be a little less susceptible (not totally immune) to the money corruption.  Most elite hockey players come from financially stable (if not outright wealthy) backgrounds.  Many of the elite football and basketball players come from poor families that truly need the money (makes them more susceptible to bribes and payouts).

Tons of credit card debt racked up in many of those hockey families. Perception and keeping up with the Joneses is everything.
