They would be better off accepting Hansen's proposal and building a new arena by the baseball stadium. You can't drive anywhere near Key Arena and there is very little parking. Transit? None. It has two cars - not a reliable method of moving 19,000 people. The buses travel on the same streets as the cars. The last time I took a bus to downtown it took about 15 minutes to get there (about 10 miles) and then about 45 minutes to the bus stop where we were going. The parking garage by the Seattle Center is very small. And one of the groups (one of them withdrew their bid a couple days ago) that wants to renovate Key Arena was talking about building a garage that would hold 850 cars - at a cost of $30,000 per car. It has been said that the mayor doesn't like Hansen and that seems to be the truth - why I have no idea. There aren't too many cities where you have a private investor who is willing to plunk down $500-600M of his own money and the city basically says they aren't interested. Since he controls the Toyota Center and hasn't wanted an NHL team and basically expelled an AHL team, a new owner could be a bidder. Houston has a massive amount of corporate support, much of it from the North. Houston could easily be an NHL city if it had an arena, and now one might be open for the NHL. Colorado is some what rumored to be having their AHL team in Loveland. Kansas City could be a place for their AHL team along with Omaha. He can schedule the Toyota Center anyway he wants now and owns a large sea food restaurant chain, Landry's, and Las Vegas casinos. Any Seattle arena won't be open for years and the NHL wants 32 teams with balanced divisions. Seattle and Quebec City would probably be the 33rd and 34th teams much later. Yet the Mayor is going to spend money to renovate Key Arena. I don't see how they are going to fix the sight lines/obstructed view at Key Arena. Just going to be another Barclays Center. Since he also now owns the Toyota Center, the NHL could make Houston the 32nd team as early as next year but more likely two years. Seattle and Quebec City could come later. NHL brass want another big media town and would welcome Houston and their expansion check.
