Indian nicknames in the news

wow...ask students right now to name the three tribes that make up the great sioux nation and most will have no clue...ask students that attended und when they were known as the sioux and you will get a lot that will give you right answer.  part of the beauty of naming und after the sioux was to educate students as they passed thru und of the history of north dakota and especially the plains indians...that's gone now.

That was my point more than anything.  Maybe a white kid from Minnesota just doesn't understand all of this, but I know that I live in Sioux CIty, I have friends in Sioux Falls, and I liked cheering for the Sioux.  What I am hearing is that the complaint did not arise from the Sioux Nation, but from someone's outside opinion saying that people "should be" offended . . . not that anyone actually "was" offended.

I know that in my world, if all of those "sioux" references didn't exist, I wouldn't know a damn thing about what a "sioux" was.

Let's be fair then, and take "sioux" out of all of the city names and business names, too.  Replace them all with "hamster" and nobody will be offended.  Actually, UND Hamsters is better than any of the nicknames that made the top five list.

How about Fighting Hamsters?

Yup, simply stating the color of their skin is tough to defend(It'd be like a team with an African American logo named Blackskins or Asian logo named yellowskins). I see a very distinct line drawn between Sioux and Redskins but some people lump them together which is disheartening when Sioux is the name of the tribe vs the pigment of their skin.

this has always been my stance as well. Specifically with regard to the Sioux name if Native Americans are offended by it I have no problem with UND changing it. I dont think a university should be offending a race of people. But we never really got to see whether a majority of people are offended by it and that's what irks me. A bunch of white people dont need to tell native americans what to be offended about as if they cant think for themselves

Folks, the NCAA hasn't read their own policy.

When it came out it said nicknames involving "race, ethnicity, or national origin" are the issue (I remember it as reno).

So, if the NCAA was serious, or to be taken as anything more than arbitrarily and capriciously headhunting some low hanging fruit (see: small Midwestern school with some intense noise making opponents and a too nice hockey arena), Irish, Trojans, Spartans, Vandals, Maccabees, and a host of others would be getting the stink eye also.

But, as Mel Brooks said, "It's good to be the king" and in this matter the NCAA is king. ???

You say eliminating NA nicknames pushes NA culture off the map, but you are only speaking of your own personal map.

Besides, does it seem to you like the tribes are interested in such publicity?  (Hint:  We failed to get their support to keep "honoring" them.)

We failed to get one tribes support. Overwhelmingly got anothers. You seem to conveniently omit that fact.

No, we failed to meet the NCAA's arbitrary guidelines which is completely different.

Spirit Lake Tribe provided support, Standing Rock's Council didn't allow it to go to a tribal majority vote. I understand we have to move on at this point but don't simplify the facts about what really happened.

You are totally correct.  Off of "my" map . . . I can't really speak for everyone else, nor can I speak for a whole nation of people.  I do know that there have been NO talks of changing the names of Sioux City, Sioux Falls, etc.  In high school, I was taught pretty much NOTHING about Native American culture or history.  The only knowledge I gained was through my own research.  Usually came from seeing a unique name on a road sign . . . or maybe on a college t-shirt.

And my answer is "yes" to your publicity question.  I can't turn a corner without seeing a big add for a Casino that is some slapped together version of a native american name or term with "vegas" or something tagged onto it.  So I'm having a hard time understanding why "sioux" can be used absolutely everywhere else without issue.  And if it IS an issue, then I'm all for taking it off of EVERYTHING!

Not racist . . . I would just like to see some cohesiveness across the board to all of this.

Do you watch college sports?

That should scare teams into keeping their names. Addidas design team is terrible. It's almost like a threat.

I'm going to assume that reply was directed at me.

Yes, I do watch college sports.  And while I agree that there are some shite examples out there of Adidas uni's, I have no way of knowing whether those are the result of Adidas' bad design choices, or the school simply having way too much input in the process.  Short of seeing what Adidas considers their in-house, team design portfolio, I am reluctant to accept your bare assertion that they are "terrible."  Heck, you may be right, I just want to see for myself.

Are you suggesting that we do have their support?

I would argue we have a majority of their support.

You're never going to get full support about anything across the board, it's not realistic.

The few offended are drowning out the many who aren't, including members of the Spirit Lake Tribe who sued the NCAA to keep the name.

That sounds like support to me, how about you?

Obama and his like minded minions are the reason why we are in this predicament.  Here's a story from Goons Blog.

While I understood the reason for retiring certain derogatory nicknames, like Redskins, it was just the first step in getting rid of the Sioux name.  Once that battle was won, the next target for the PC liberals in GF was the Sioux name.  Sure some will say at was all the NCAA (more like minded liberals), but behind the scenes there was a lot going on at UND to get this done.  So with that, fire away kids!

We?  You mean Grant Shaft and those losers that supposedly went in fighting to keep the name....and last I checked yes you honor people by naming roads, bridges, building, universities, scholarships, boats, and cities after them to remember them forever...
