GeauxSioux Posted January 6, 2011 Share Posted January 6, 2011 Butte's Schrader to swim for North Dakota Butte High swimmer Ethan Schrader has signed a letter of intent to swim at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D. Schrader is the two-time reigning Class AA 100-yard backstroke champion and has finished second in the 500 freestyle in each of his three years in high school. Looking at the current rosters for both mens and womens swimming/diving and there isn't anyone from Montana currently on the roster. UND Women's Swimming & Diving is going to the WAC WAC Expansion Announcement That is huge news for the swimming program! But since the WAC doesn't have men's swimming, what would be it's destination? The MVC, Sunbelt, and CUSA all only have a couple of men's teams. Edit: Just did some checking. A men's swimming conference of: Denver Seattle North Dakota Pacific Bakersfield Hawaii could make an appearance, either as a new WAC sport, or as part of the Mountain Pacific Federation. Mountain Pacific Federation - an umbrella conference for western olympic sports The WAC women's swimming lineup will be: San Jose St Idaho Seattle Denver Northern Arizona New Mexico St North Dakota - possibly Hawaii as the Big West doesn't sponsor swimming Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
GeauxSioux Posted June 16, 2011 Author Share Posted June 16, 2011 The official announcement...Women's swimming and diving joins WAC as affiliate University of North Dakota Director of Athletics Brian Faison is pleased to announce that UND has accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) as an affiliate member in women's swimming and diving beginning with the 2011-12 season. The announcement comes following the conclusion of the WAC's Board of Directors meeting in Park City, Utah. "This is an important next step for our women's swimming and diving program," said Faison. UND joins MPSF in men’s swimming and diving University of North Dakota Director of Athletics Brian Faison is pleased to announce that UND has accepted an invitation to join the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) in men's swimming and diving. The Fighting Sioux will compete as MPSF members in men's swimming and diving beginning with the 2011-12 season. Other MPSF institutions that compete in men's swimming and diving include Air Force, Brigham Young, Cal State Bakersfield, Pacific, Seattle, Hawai'i, UNLV, and Wyoming. Additionally, the University of Denver will join the conference in 2012-13. "This is an incredibly significant move for our men's swimming and diving program," said Faison. "It provides our student-athletes with a true conference home, and the chance to compete against highly regarded programs for a conference championship, as well as the opportunity to earn individual athletic and academic awards." Quick question though, would it not have made more sense for both the men's and women's swimming teams to join the MPSF? I'm not a close follower so I don't know how scheduling works, but it seems that with one head coach for both programs means that Coach Parsons will be a really busy guy................ I'm not a close follower so I don't know how scheduling works, but it seems that with one head coach for both programs means that Coach Parsons will be a really busy guy................ The only time that men's and women's teams will be forced to go separate ways is for conference championships - and those meets may actually be on different weeks. Otherwise, both teams may have nearly identical travel schedules, as conferences don't mandate dual meets - only the concluding NCAA-qualifying conference meet. The current MPSF ranks for women's swimming assume that the Big West will not sponsor that sport. With the recent addition of Hawaii, the Big West is back to five schools (UCD, UCSB, Cal Poly, Pacific, Hawaii) and only needs one more affiliate addition (Loyola Marymount or USD) to decimate the ranks of MPSF women's swimming. MPSF would be left with Northern Colorado and Bakersfield, which would be horrible for UND women's swimming. On the men's side, the MWC recently dropped men's swimming after losing TCU and Utah as well as BYU, so teams from Wyoming, AFA, UNLV, and BYU were forced to join the MPSF for that sport. With Denver, Seattle, and Hawaii, the MPSF for men's swimming is an ideal conference for UND. Other than the PAC10, the MPSF is really the only game in town for men's swimming in the western US. In general, affiliation with a multisport conference is preferable to the MPSF, except in sports that the PAC10 doesn't sponsor. UND's recruiting power, which has suffered during the transition, should dramatically increase with affiliation in these conferences, which are much more desirable than the Summit or even MVC. GeauxSioux Posted November 30, 2011 Author Share Posted November 30, 2011 Women's team inks pair for 2012-13 season University of North Dakota head women's swimming and diving coach Steve Parsons announced today that Teresa DiGregorio (Burnsville, Minn.) and Courtney Funk (Minot, N.D.) have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Fighting Sioux for the 2012-13 season. A member of the Edina Swim Club, DiGregorio is a five-time all-conference selection (2007-2011). After leading the 400 medley relay to a state title in 2010, she received all-state honors in the 200 medley relay and the 100 fly. Also in 2010, DiGregorio was a state runner-up in the 200 fly and a National Club Swimming Association (NSCA) Junior National qualifier. Funk, a sprint freestyler from Minot High School, won state titles in the 50 free and the 100 free both as a junior and as a sophomore. A five-year letterwinner and a five-time all-state and all-conference honoree, she was named team MVP in 2010 and earned rookie of the year honors in 2007. GeauxSioux Posted November 30, 2011 Author Share Posted November 30, 2011 Ballantyne, Chanas-LaRue added to 2012-13 roster University of North Dakota head men's swimming and diving coach Steve Parsons announced today that Ian Ballantyne and Aaron Chanas-LaRue have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Fighting Sioux for the 2012-13 season. A native of Bismarck, N.D., Ballantyne is a four-time state champion and was a finalist in the 100 breast at the 2010 Winter Junior Nationals. An eight-time all-state honoree, he earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-America accolades in 2010. Also a star on the soccer field, Ballantyne was named to the 2011 West Region All-Tournament team. A member of Swim Manitoba, Chanas-LaRue earned bronze medals in both the 100 free and the 200 free at the 2011 Canadian Age Group Championship. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, he set new club records in the 15-17 age group (long course) in the 200 free (1:53.70) and the 100 fly (57.99), and was a member of the record 400 free relay (3:39.62), 800 free relay (8:01.94) and 400 medley relay (4:07.18) teams. In 2009, he broke the Canadian age group record in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.55 in the 14 and under category, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:55.97 set by three-time Olympian Brian Johns in 1997. Wyoming (556) 4. Hawaii (493.5) 5. Cal State-Bakersfield (463.5) 6. Air Force (265) 7. Pacific (238) 8. Seattle (227.5) 9. North Dakota (191) WAC Women's S&D standings 1. San Jose State (728) 2. Northern Arizona (622) 3. Hawaii (524) 4. New Mexico State (429) 5. Nevada (377) 6. Fresno State (364) 7. Idaho (318) 8. North Dakota (206) Obviously both teams have a long way to go. But on the positive side, the men set new school records in 2 events and the women set new schools records in 6 events this season. Hopefully with the new conferences and now being eligible for the national meet the programs will grow and become more competitive at the DI level.
