For me athletes are good because they inspire many, but because of that, I feel like the players should take a pay cut and give the left over funds to student organizations. Use Greene for example; does he really need 10 million to live. Ok make that 5 million with taxes, but still. I say a million is more then enough to live on when most families much less then that and are fine. donate the other four million or 4 million to a program that supports students and be a real role model. Many athletes often times donate to past organizations such as Engelstad and his wife, but it is not always needed. As noted, Greene set up an endowment for UND scholarships. If I remember correctly, the amount was for 50k a year. That's what he gives publicly. I agree that athletes make a lot; no one would argue that. But just because the general public isn't aware of giving doesn't mean it isn't happening. Maybe some athletes donate funds to support students, maybe some goes to flood or tornado relief efforts or cancer research or the AIDS epidemic or a local hospital or homeless shelter. But a part of me says they have to plan ahead, theirs is a limited career at that level. After getting used to a different lifestyle (I assume), they have to plan for the rest of their life. Also, there is the possibility of disabling injuries. Guess I keep remembering Travis Roy and his first shift into the college game against UND. Hi, I'm on the board of directors of an organization with $200+ million in assets and $100 million in annual revenues. We're looking for a new CEO. We'd like to hire you for $1 million per year. And we assume you'll be giving about 80% of that to students because you can easily live on $200k annually. Right? Greene's making $10 million over 4 years ($2.5 annually). Taxes, agents, etc. and he's taking less than half of that. And given his age, that may be the last deal of his career. He'll be 30 and done earning. Compare that to ... I prefer to go to college games. I watch big-league sports on TV. A big reason is the cost. To get a decent seat to the Avalanche costs around $100. Does Jonathan really have some deep seated grudge against the program?... If so I've never seen that, he always speaks highly of UND and gives respect and reverence for his time there in interviews. He said Toews had nothing but great things to say about the program and that he and Troy Murray follow the club through the year and talk about it.
