  1. Soccer 2017-2018 Season

UND won its Exhibition opener 1-0 yesterday. They generated a ton of chances. Below is a more detailed recap and quote from our new coach Chris Logan. This is an offensively minded team that will earn a lot of chances this year. seamoresports.com/2017/08/13/und-flies-past-jamestown-1-0-in-exhibition-opener/
  2. Montana State Predictions

Before last weeks debacle at USD, I would have thought UND would be favored for a solid win vs MSU. Now I am not so sure. Was the USD game an aberration caused by overconfidence on the part of the team and the staff? Did it expose some flaws in the team, maybe or maybe not caused by injuries? Was the staff a little lax in the preparation of the team? At this point I vote that last Saturday was the 'perfect storm' caused by overconfidence, injuries, and running into a really 'hot' opponent with a chip on its shoulder that played a great game. I think Schmidt will have a better plan to deal with a depleted defense and MSU will score less than 24. I am sure Rudy(encouraged by Bubba) will be putting together a game plan to control the clock and make it easier for the defense. Taubenheim needs to be better with his kicks and Santiago needs to have more good returns. I say Olivera has another big game vs MSU and we run for 250 plus as a team. Studsrud and the receivers have a better game and he passes for 200 plus. Defense has a td and finds a way to stop Murray. No more than 5 penalties and we convert 70% on third down. UND 27-21.
  3. US vs Canada - Women's Hockey

Just purchased 6 tickets to Friday's game between the US Women and Canadian Women at the Ralph...I never got to see the twins play for UND and it will be the last time to see them at the Ralph! Also, it would be nice to see a US win at our Rink!
  4. Might as well put this here.
  5. UND Fan Survey

Anybody else receive the e-mailed fan survey from UND/REA? Mine arrived Tuesday afternoon, and showed up as coming from fans@theralph.com. The survey was quick and straightforward enough; it covered MH, M/WBB, VB and FB and hit on everything from in-game experience to concessions to parking. My only beef is that it never asked me to provide contact information for the raffle.
  6. Since NDSU got its way with two home games (2015 and 2019) vs UND and none in GF, where will the first Missouri Valley Conference game be played in 2020? Will the MVC see the injustice and give the game to Grand Forks or will they favor the older member of the conference and play a third straight game in Fargo? NDSU's insistence that both games under the current deal be played in Fargo may backfire on them when the MV chooses Grand Forks for the first game that really means something..
  7. Open to any location as I know three together is tough to find.

  9. Tom Miller's questionable comparison

In a column/article about UND hockey, longtime Herald sports writer Tom Miller dropped this bomb: Really, Tom? You had to go there? It's 2017. We're several years removed from the previous regime, we've grown, we've matured, we've tasted success, we've made the playoffs, and we are full of hope and optimism for the first time in a long time. Yet, you had to take a snipe at the previous coach? By name? Show some class. The writer here could have used big boy words and made several creative or witty allusions to the recent down period for UND football. He could have indirectly referenced Mussman a million different ways, and all of the readers in Siouxland would have gotten the joke, and maybe even smirked a little. He could have taken the high road and tied FB attendance to fan apathy or performance generally, instead of calling out a coach or a staff. This was small, petty, and mean. And bush league journalism. Okay for Deadspin, I suppose...maybe that's where Tom's aspirations lie. The Herald is blessed to have such an excellent sports writer in Brad Schlossman...I only wish the same could be said for his colleague and understudy. Boo, Tom. Boo.

  16. The myth of the perfect logo, and moving on

Art is subjective. http://artblog.catherinehoman.com/is-art-itself-subjective/ It is shamefully ignorant to suggest otherwise. Moreover, every person is free to dislike a particular work of art. By that same token, no person has any business whatsoever telling another how he or she should respond to that work. And out of minimal respect for the art, and the artist, one should not confuse his or her own negative aesthetic emotion with an assessment of the objective quality of a work. The notion that there could be a singular drawing that would instantaneously garner anything close to universal acclaim and acceptance as the Fighting Hawk logo is fiction, and a fantasy. Words like "good," "better," and "best" are meaningless except to the individual using them. The hyperbole and vitriol I have seen expressed on this subject lead me to believe that many were looking for something that simply does not exist. I have no doubt that many will keep looking, ignoring the harm it may cause. Petitions and calls to the President, and veiled (or not) threats of withheld donations, are sure to follow. Some will quietly object by not buying anything (thus depriving UND of royalty revenue), while others will sit in silent judgment on friends and neighbors. A few will make it a point to noisily reject the logo at every game and at every gathering in hopes that a friendly ear will be close by. So, for you personally, does this fool's errand continue and if so, how long and to what end? How many iterations, and how much time, trouble, and money, until 'they get it right'? Assuming you'll accept something short of perfection, what qualifies as good enough?
  17. Interlocking ND...An identity crisis

"Identity," as defined at dictionary.com From the logo reaction thread: How's this for a reason: the interlocking ND was not UND's identity. Like it or not, this is a problem that was never, ever, ever going to go away. I find it ironic that many of the same people who continually lambaste UND's administration over a lack of leadership and the failure to take action to address problems (e.g., the budget) are finding it so difficult to praise the leadership now and give credit where it's due for taking a definitive stance and -- finally -- giving UND Athletics a true identity.
  18. Mascot...why not?

Over the years, I've seen a lot of people on here cop a serious, borderline snobby attitude about cartoonish logos and goofy mascots. Regardless of what UND's new Fighting Hawks identity looks like, here is some proof that UND is going to need something more than a 'logo.' This is a huge part of what college athletics is about and, IMHO, this is the kind of fun and frivolity that UND is and has been sorely lacking. I think a mascot should be priority # 1 going forward.
  19. Flip the bird...a name

UND's Fighting Hawk is going to need a name; I'll start: Clarence Beaks.
  20. Fire Hakstol's Replacement

Never hurts to get an early start.
  21. Here we are, less than 24 hours from the title tilt in Tampa with Quinnipiac. I'm curious, what do people think about the relationship (if any) between the ultimate success on the ice and the nickname situation?
  22. #ROTCLivesMatter

    Hmmmm. http://www.grandforksherald.com/opinion/letters/3990525-letter-military-maneuvers-startle-already-stressed-und-campus Meanwhile, at UND...
  23. Hi, I am willing to purchase 4 tickets from anyone who might not be using theirs for the Saturday game against Colorado College on Jan. 23. PM me if you're interested in selling.
  24. Fun with the logo? Amen!

http://www.grandforksherald.com/opinion/letters/3910873-letter-memo-fighting-hawks-logo-designer-have-fun This guy gets it. When was the last time any of this was fun? Haven't we had enough solemnity, seriousness, and negativity?
  25. It's Fighting Sioux Hockey

Going back over a half of a century from the first time University of North Dakota blades hit ice surfaces all across America it grown from the beginning to become this unique and special program we all know as Fighting Sioux hockey. As I have said before, a nickname which has reached the full potential of a nickname like none other. The official name for the school can be whatever it is, no matter, it has no impact on the reality of who we are, who this team is, or what the program is. Ask any player who has played for the program, current or past, ask any fan or any foe, hear it loud and here it clear, it's fighting Sioux Hockey and those that understand it are so very proud of what we all have and share. So Sioux Forever on ya! ...Let's have this thread as a place fans can post great statments or quotes from players, past or present, coaches and public figures who speak to this fact. I hear it all of the time and I have for many many years, long before the Sioux name was in the NCAA cross hairs. Being a Sioux Hockey fan or player has been a pretty special thing for scores and the Sioux name is central in that tradition. The Sioux name speaks to that tradition. It's very clear that the preponderance of those invested plan to keep the Sioux name as a predominant identification of said tradition. So when you hear it, post it. ...Let's not have this thread be another move on debate thread. All of the move on plants and cronnies can move on now,. The schools official name has changed and the settlement agreement with the NCAA has been met. Done! Whoo hoo!! (Applause) If you want to promote the new nickname do it somewhere else. This is about honoring our tradition and respecting our name. The name we choose to call ourselves and, its pretty apparent, want to continue to refer to ourselves as and as long as it is a free country we get to proudly declair ourselves as. Go Sioux!!
