I agree. He is a very interesting and dedicated man. North Dakota ties are important, particulary when dealing with the State Budgeting system.

Not that I am a fan of Buning or Harmeson, but you need to seriously sit back and reconsider your thoughts on Phil Harmeson. Just because someone is a FAR doesn't mean they are qualified to run an athletic department anymore than a city councilperson is qualified to be a the city police chief. The FAR by definition is a representative of the faculty of a university to assist with the athletic component of an institution. They are there to give justification to an athletic department and legitimize the academics that are occuring but they are not to run an athletic department. The point being, that a "real FAR" doesn't deal with athletic issues such as staffing and contracts but rather serves at the pleasure of a president to represent the academic side of an institution. An FAR should never, under any circumstances be involved in personnel issues with staffing... Secondly, the NCAA is going to frown upon a VP being appointed between the AD and the president. That does go against the intent of the process. That being said, in many institutions the AD is designated a VP or sits at that same level of institutional managment. Refer to Arizona State University for an example... That being said, UND handled this whole thing horribly. AD's get fired everyday around the country. Very rarely does it make the NACDA report due to the manner in which it is handled. The fact the UND had to send out a letter to Division I institutions in the country about the problems occuring and how they are still progressing towards Div. I so please schedule us is a testimate to how poorly it was handled. That, unfortunately, is PAR for the course for UND...

First off, this whole discussion chain is flawed in many respects. FB games and their contracts are scheduled years in advance. Ferris state and Winona state are examples of that. With that, their are many negotiations that go with offers. In that process NCAA rules change, along with the rules to rankings and playoff contentions. In the early negotiations that occured between the rivals, the rules were changing with regards to playoff penalties and possibilities with win-losses. Many people were not happy with NDSU's decision to go DIAA and wanted to penalize them for their decision, in partiular because of their lack of consultation with their major rival as a partner in the process. That being said, the rivalry was not ignored nor forgotten, just the rules were different. I would not pretend to understand the complexities is this scenario, but the fact remains, as I have stated from day one, we cannot discontinue the rivalry. The delay in RT's response to the original proposal from NDSU was based on many factors including: 1. The NCAA was working on a point system that could hurt DII schools playing non-DII schools 2. The input of many sources, including FB staff, other coaching staff, admin and the presidents thoughts. 3. Rearrange of schedules, since FB schedules and contracts are signed years in advance. 4. The uncertainty of what the transition of NDSU to DI would do 5. The increased scholarship limit and how fast NDSU would gain an advantage over UND 6. I hate to say, but the anger over NDSU going DI and not discussing a deal to make a package deal with UND. (This could be the biggest factor of all).

Why Mike Fitzer? What is the connection. Rico, a great guy, has struggled at Wayne State after Mac left. Mac (the Univ. of Northern Iowa), would obviously be a great choice, but he will go on, at some point to bigger and better things, as he is hottest item in DI (small school), with wins against ISU and Iowa. What about Big Ben with UNI? If UND goes DI, would he come back?

I am guessing that she had a confrontation that ended with the words, "if you don't like it here, then feel free to resign". That being said she did. Coach Bina is a great coach and I think that NDSU just missed the boat. Coach Bruggeman, until recently, didn't have the history of success or facilities to work with. I wonder if that didn't play a factor or the Division I and lack of success at that level caused the rift. Either way, NDSU lost one of their most successful coaches, including Bucky, Larson and Ruley.

Interesting enough, it brought up good discussion in the big sky with that win. Wins like that, as unlikely as they are, bring up the discussion of UND and NDSU as big sky teams. The issue still remains, how to incorporate these teams into the league without distrubting the leagues balance of power and revenue.

I saw the same thing and I was amongst a lot of friends who have heard my rants about sioux hockey but didn't quite understand it. It was great to see that the other night. It brings home our point of the power of collegiate hockey and the sioux name with it. It rocked!

The betty was paid for not by the students but thru borrowed money tied up with the REA. Hence the name, BESC. So if tuition is going up it has little or nothing to do with athletics. And, I agree with several of the other posts, while it has some issues, it is much better than the Hyslop. I can remember the nights were they had to open the back doors on below zero nights to get it to cool off, but then the benches and players were freezing and the fans in the upper bowl were sweating. It lacked proper lighting, a video score board and had almost no ability to sell advertising. Not to mention the issues with practice since BB, VB, Men's & Womens Track, Baseball & SB were all practicing at the same time. Oh yeah, and the locker rooms were junk.

I concure. This is a marriage for scheduling purposes only. Much as the Great West is. It gives them something to shoot for, but what is the real result of that. No bid to the Tourney, the source of revenue to the big money.

Once again, it boils down to... why isn't he happy here. Is it the idea that he doesn't really have a say, neither does the AD? Read the release on his hiring and make your own judgement on who is running the athletic department...!
